Shamrocks & Shenanigans

This weekend I ran the Shamrocks & Shenanigans
5K in Ann Arbor. Got to say it was a strange race day for me. I had 3 friends who were supposed to run with me and they all got sick or injured, which left me flying solo. I almost decided not to go... but I had already picked up my packet and needed to turn in my timing chip (at least that's what I told myself). I had also engaged in some shenanigans on Saturday night at a wine tasting party, which was less than ideal for getting ready to run on a cold, damp Sunday morning. But, I got up and got myself out there.
The race itself was okay... not the most fun I've ever had running since it wasn't staged and I found myself dodging slower runners for over a mile and there were actually people trying to nudge slower runners to move over... and my nudge, I mean almost push. So the atmosphere was a little odd at the beginning. But, it got better once the pace spread out and there was actually room to run.
Once I finally had some space, I felt okay on the road. Decent pace and handled the hills better than I expected. I knew I wasn't running my best, but didn't really expect it since I did a 9 mile training run 2 days before and had quite a few beverages the night before. Given my lowered expectations, I felt good about crossing the line at 28:19 (9:07 pace). I finished in the top 20% of my age bracket and in the top 33% overall. I was about 30 seconds off my PR, so I know I can beat it if I focus.
Looking forward to a race where I'm going at it full force!
