Good news------dogs can lose weight and get healthier too! Do it together!

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

This is Waylon's BEFORE PICTURE TAKEN IN AUGUST OF 2007--WEIGHT 98 POUNDS. His top weight was 104 earlier that year when he was placed in his foster rescue home. Now he is the picture of health and looks like a different dog.

It is possible that what you are doing just needs a bit of tweaking.............for you and your animal, maybe some better vitamins and better foods not starving and eating less. Our beautiful Waylon Jennings(named after the country singer by his first owner) has lost down from 90 pounds one year ago to 84 pounds at his check-up today. He is awesome looking as you can see from the profile picture. He also just turned 6 years old a couple of weeks ago and looks and acts younger than he did at age 3. When we adopted him he was a really fat dog, as he was kept in a pen by previous owners who had him since a 4 month old puppy up until about 3 years ago. Then he was turned over to a rescue by another family member, who was a loving person but who could not keep him or give him the exercise they knew he needed to get better.

There at the foster-rescue family's home, playing with all the other animals and kids, he lost down from his top weight of 104 to 98 pounds, when we adopted him in August of 2007. He looked like a big round barrel and nothing like a slim trim Collie. Our vet recommended that we adopt another younger dog to be with Waylon J. and to make him play and move more and it worked. He really lost more weight and was on diet dog food for a year or so and shaped up over the past 2 years and held the 90 pound weight which was good. It seemed to be where he was stuck---weight wise but still he was continuing to be shaping up and losing the flab. It was due to another problem that we actually made the big difference in him and his weight. Waylon J. was having problems with hot spots on his back and sides, which was a new problem for him. They would go away with the medicine put on them completely ........but come back within days and this went on from October past Christmas and they got worse and bigger each time.

Then I read that sometimes hot spots are caused by food allergies which we and our vet blamed on the heat in the house being dry and Waylon J. being inside more this winter. So we found what we thought might be a better up-scale but more enriched brand of food for him (not a prescription one) and tried it and saw the improvement within a week. No more hot spots at all since the food change and our other dog who eats it also has gotten thicker fur and both had already seemed to have their winter coats. Now this couch potato dog of the past is more active and his coat is even more beautiful as he is a long haired Collie and Yellow Lab Mix. Waylon J. is probably part Golden Retriever in there too back a generation or so, as he looks like one from a distance, except for his face which is Collie.

So anyone out there with an over -weight dog, please try and figure out what is going on and what might work for your dog, just as you have to for yourself, change the diet ( and dieting on diet food may not solve the problem), move them and yourself more too, make sure they have all the vitamins they need and the success is bound to come. A healthier dog who will thank you and love you longer. Just wanted to say that it can be done.

What a handsome boy! I'm sure he's so much happier now that he's able to run and play so much more unencumbered. Interesting point about working with several different approaches rather than just the "diet" food.
