I Like Spark

I’ve been using SparkPeople.com like crazy lately. I originally joined in Sept. 0f 2006. A friend had recommended it to me.
I barely used SparkPeople in 2006 – probably because I got a boyfriend soon after I joined and was busy spending every moment with him. Lol. I came back to the site a few times, but I would just use it for a few days before forgetting it again. This was probably because I was busy with being in college, and I just wasn’t ready to start my weight loss/getting healthy stuff. I always “thought” I was ready because I always wanted to be skinny, but I didn’t realize I just needed to eat healthier and exercise. Of course, part of me knew that but it took a long time before it ever hit home. I read my journal from high school, and it was disgusting how often I went out to eat at McDonald’s, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut with my friends. It seemed normal to me. Even when I was working out a lot in high school and losing weight, I didn’t change my eating habits. So as soon as I finished high school and wasn’t going to my weightlifting class anymore, I gained all the weight back.
I started using SparkPeople again this past summer after I graduated from college. I did more of the use it for a few days, forget for awhile, then use it again. Near the end of September, I was feeling depressed again about my body. I was in the office after 5 p.m. one day and just crying about it. Not very hard, but enough for a co-worker to notice. We talked about it and he made me feel a lot better. I had cut out a coupon for Weight Watchers – 2 months for the price of 1. I wanted to use it, but I was scared of going. He made me feel that I could do it. I ended up going to Weight Watchers & loved it.
For the first 2 months of it, I didn’t really work out. Sure, I did cardio a few times in my apartment complex gym and hated it. I was learning a lot about eating right but I couldn’t get myself moving. I started using SparkPeople again and was able to stick with it. I posted on a message board about needing a workout buddy in my area and eventually got a response. We met at her gym, LA Fitness, and I used the free 3 day pass. Of course, they come up to you afterward and pretty much force you to join. Ugh. I hate salespeople. But I’ve enjoyed going to the gym. The first few times we went, we mainly did cardio and some random weight machines. After we had that fitness assessment mentioned in the last post, we’ve done a lot of strength training. We love it.
I had to quit Weight Watchers because I’m poor, but I do still have SparkPeople to help me out. I miss the meetings where you are able to be face to face with people and I miss the weigh-ins. But I’m glad I can use SparkPeople to track my food and exercise to be sure I stay within my goals.
