Habits That Stuck

• Drink 8 glasses of water a day - 6 down, 2 to go.
• Exercise 90 minutes/week - 45 minutes at the gym today, plus yoga
• Do 10 minutes yoga a day - 15 minutes this afternoon
• Write one page a day - Done.

Sometimes, it feels like I learned nothing the first time I did Spark. At the time, I really felt like I was in it for long-term. I believed I was making a lifestyle change, that I’d never gain the weight back, that I was getting my life under control, and would do nothing but succeed at my goals from that point forward.

Boy, was I wrong.

Over the last few days, though, I’ve been thinking that there were some habits that stuck.

1. All whole-grain all the time.
I hadn’t been buying white bread in a long time even when I started Spark in 2006, but now I cook brown rice and whole-wheat pasta as well. I don’t even think about it anymore. It’s just what I buy.

2. Active outings.
My family doesn’t go to movies that often. We don’t eat a lot of restaurant meals either. We do hike together almost every weekend in the summer. We go ice skating and to museums. When we go downtown, we take light rail and walk a lot.

3. Who needs a close parking space?
Unless it’s really raining (yes, I know I live in Seattle), I usually pull into a parking lot and take the first spot I see. It seems silly circle looking for something close just to avoid a few extra steps.

I’m sure there are more, but I’m glad to know that, despite everything, some of my healthy habits are here for good. Perhaps this time around, a few more will stay around.

    Keeping up any of the great habits from last time sure makes it easier to continue this time. I managed to leave pretty much all of my great habits behind from the last time I lost weight, but I've found many of them really easy to fall back in to. Thank goodness! Welcome back.

    You and I have followed a similar path, as far as re-gaining what we had lost, and keeping little habits like whole-grain instead of white stuff. I'm not very active again yet, but do park in the first spot I find instead of circling around looking for something closer.

    You are doing great, Jenn! One day at a time, one goal at a time. That's what I'm doing, and it's working.
