My First Real Blog - Not SP Calendar-Related - Balance

Sunday, January 24, 2010

On this Sunday, as I struggle to fit in alone time for me, normal Sunday phone conversations with family, exercise, and two assignments due by midnight tonight, I find myself musing about balance. No big surprise here, eh?

First, I will give myself a pat on the back where it is deserved. I am grateful that I am aware of balance struggles, that my communication with my partner on this issue is excellent, and as a result, I normally do a good job of balancing between work life, time with my partner, time with myself, time for exercise, time with friends (both alone and with my partner), time for my volunteer work, and my MBA program, which is about to come to an end in mid-April.

With that out of the way, it takes CONSTANT ATTENTION on my part to make all of this happen. I am curious about tools that others might use to keep this important issue - balance - to the forefront in a busy, crazy world with so many demands and so many wonderful ways available to spend your time ...

I welcome any thoughts, tips, ideas ...

Now, off for 15 minutes of exercise before I start studying!

Stephanie -- I struggle with this issue as well. As you can imagine, my own self-judgment around eating, body image, and plain old lack of confidence that I am qualified to do what I do, play a huge role in this. I don't know if I have found any answers except to keep hope but here are some of the things I do:

~ MUSIC -- this is a huge one for me. I know you are a music lover too so maybe it will help. I surround myself with the kinds of music I need. Soothing and w/o words, when I need to study or read or grade papers; Upbeat when I need to be more awake and work on detail kinds of things (or exercise). Regardless I almost always have my friend, music, around me.
~ MY SURROUNDINGS -- I have worked on creating spaces where I WANT to be when I do my work and my workouts. It didn't cost a lot, but I bought some wall tapestries, printed and framed some of my favorite inspirational poems (much of which Maha unknowingly pointed me to); added a shelf with candles, incense, and some meaningful stone/crystals. Both offices (home and work) are now places I love to be. I also added some of these touches to the workout room so that would be more welcoming.
~ MEDITATION - I know it sound like an "oxymoron" of sorts to sit and do nothing when you have too much to do, but I have found starting my day with 15 minutes of this helps me to focus better and be more productive. Beside, now that I have done it for awhile, I look forward to this time with myself each day. It is like a mini-vacation where I can just be quiet and not worry about anything.
~ MULTITASKING - I am not a fan of normal multitasking, but I wrote a blog about how to fit in more time for reading and meditating using this concept. You might want to check it out.
~ ENERGY WORK - I don't know if you are familiar with energy work but I started learning about it a couple of summers ago. I found that it is very refreshing and helps my sense of "giving back" to work on others and help them. It is sort of like Reiki, but without the attunements and symbols. I think Reiki will be a great next step for me, but for now, I like the open-endedness of Quantum Healing energy work.
~ PERSISTENCE - Keep working on new ways to nurture yourself. Some days, I just can't make myself meditate or I miss my workout b/c I teach from 9 am to 10 pm. On those days, I try to make sure I find other ways to give myself little gifts -- to nurture my spirit. Perhaps a quick phone call to my sister, or a short walk at lunch to breathe fresh air. But, always with the consciousness that this is a gift I am giving myself.
~ Finally, I would say the most important thing is OPTIMISM -- that is, a sense that I am learning and growing daily. And even when I have setbacks and feel like I am so out of balance, I must look at what is happening and what I can learn from it. The setbacks have been some of my greatest teachers!

Oh, and there is always staying in touch with new friends! :-)
I like that one a lot!

Best to you dear new friend! Just remember --- progress, not perfection!
