Husky

Tuesday, November 24, 2009

Was looking at an ad in the paper today for clothes. Glance down at the kids jeans and the last line said "Available in Husky Sizes". Felt a cold chill go through me at that moment as I thought back to my grade school days and how I always had to wear those husky sizes. Lot of bad memories from grade school and high school from my weight issues and this little thing of an ad brought them back quickly because as anyone who wears those sizes knows "husky" does not mean "husky" it means fat. And fat as an adult is in no way easy, but fat as a kid is plain painful.

On days when I stop at the school to pick up my 5 year old son, I can't help but notice the large number of overweight children I see there. For a lot of them just being somewhat overweight will probably be nothing more then an inconvenience during their school years. But all those kids I see who are very overweight I just feel for knowing what they have coming in the years ahead. Having gone through that myself, it is something I would wish on no one, and I just hope they are able to avoid it better then I did.

It is sad that obesity has become an epidemic in both adults and children. t comes from a society where we are given everything and deny ourselves nothing. Too much TV and computer time, snacking and not enough nature time. Too many shortcuts and convenience. Too many vehicles and not enough people walking! They just don't participate in physical activity anymore. That some schools don't have much of a gym program is bad. Whatever happened to the days where we would all get outside and enjoy playing games like Red rover, hide and seek and catch?
You appear to have a good active lifestyle and nothing is more motivating then enjoy beautiful scenery and getting out to enjoy it! I am sorry you felt you had to have surgery to help you. You needed Spark back then! Its all about healthy eating and exercise and doing it consistently. I wish you all the best with your program!
