World winning candy eater...

Saturday, October 31, 2009

Being swedish I have the doubtful honor to be best in the world in eating candy... the swedes stuffs themselves with 17 kg of candy/year - last counted 2007. On second place is England with 16 kilos while americans sits on 8th place with "only" 11 kilos...

The list:
1. Sweden 17 kg
2. England 16 kg
3. Germany 15 kg
4. Norway 15 kg
5, Finland 14,5 kg
6. Denmark 14 kg
7. Belgium 13,5 kg
8.USA 11 kg
9. Australia 11 kg
10. France 8 kg

In Europe it seems as the south has a much lower consumption of sweets - the portugese eats only 2 kilos each year..

These facts comes from an new book "Candy for the people" and it also says that candy consumption in Sweden has raised from 9.8 kg to 17 kg from 1980-2007. The authors says that the measure is a welfare sign, the higher welfare in a country the more sweets are eaten by the people. But it is also a sign of poor food culture - in northern Europe we are not as sophisticated as in the south with cooking.

Another interesting statement is that swedes are not ashamed of their candy culture, it is ok for a grownup to eat candy in public. While the inhabitants of southern Europe consider it a little childish to like candy.

The dramatic raise in consumption happened when the stores started to sell candy in loose weight (?) you have a lot of containers and can pick your own mix...

Candy is not my pitfall - I eat it but it´s more like the disease of compulsive eating than really liking it - the cheap chocolate that is used to make that "pick-candy" is ...yik no good. Expensive belgian chocolate..,. that I like.

But I´ve become fat on cream and fat - I like food and butter and greasy things. Suger is not that interesting. And I´ll make it a goal not to contribute to the swedes winning postition - I´ll start with deciding no candy on halloween!

Candy binges are like bad lovin'...
they start out so sensual and end with a broken spirit.

The high just isn't worth the crash anymore...well, at least not today. So much stuff in the house and I thank God I am not interested in any of it. And most will go to work with my husband on Monday. Another thing I am thankful for.

Thanks for the insight! I agree, candy is only one thing that I am capable of overeating. Luckily, it's just my husband and me in the house. I didn't buy any candy to give out this year. I'm giving out microwave popcorn. Hope all do well!!! emoticon
