Looking for work

Monday, August 24, 2009

Boy you sure know how old you are when it comes time to look for work. I know employers are not supposed to discriminate against age but they sure do. I find it very hard to believe with my work history that I have absolutely no skills for a job. I have been looking for work for over a year and no one has even bothered to interview me yet.

Thanks for all your comments. It's nice to know I'm not the only one that feels this way.

I have the same problem, Kay. I was laid off from my job of over 13 years back in February and have not gotten a single interview in the last 6 months despite applying for probably 50 jobs that were bullet-point line for line what is on my resume! I think that there are so many applicants for every job that they actually look for less experienced people because they can pay less.

Thanks for the pedicure! And good luck to both of us in the job hunt!

Ditto that! I finished my masters in accounting last fall. Interview with 3 of the BIG 4 and not even a nibble. Two of the interviews were great interviews as well. So, I am thankful for a job (living in Michigan) even tho it is mostly clerical / accounts payable.

I know how you feel also. I got my bachelors degree in accounting in May 2008 and haven't been able to get a job in the accounting field yet. I have the education that everybody wants but they won't hire me because I don't have the experience. that is the catch 22: no job - no experience; no experience - no job. I am hoping that something good happens in that regard in the near future but not holding my breath. Good luck to you on your job search.

I know what you mean. I have an MBA and tons of experience, and I feel age discriminated as well. I'll be 55 on September 3. I was the first choice for a job a month ago, but they chose someone younger. Grrrrr. So now instead of looking online, I'm networking in my city -- hard to do b/c I'm pretty introverted.

Be sure your age can't be deduced from things on your resume. I don't have graduation dates, and I don't list employers from more than 10 years ago.

Hang in there; the right thing will come along. Companies ARE hiring -- just not so much. But the jobs are out there.

    emoticon Good luck!
