What is universal, contagious, and make you feel and the others good?


We laugh 6 min a day, it is three times less than at the beginning of the 20th century. Is it dramatic? Yes, it is!

Laughing is to humans what purring is to cats and some felines, it can be a natural healer and a good way to relieve the stress.

Our life is not always a bed of roses, so what to do when we don't have so many reasons to laugh? The answer: Practicing Laughter Yoga.

* What is Laughter Yoga?

Laughter Yoga is an alternative healing technique that consists of exercises designed to get people to laugh for no reason, combined with simple yoga breathing techniques. It uses a blend of playful and tension-releasing laughter exercises to improve health, reduce stress, and increase feelings of well-being.

Laughter exercises, even if begun by faking it, almost always lead to real laughter, especially when done in a group. However, research has shown that simulated laughter creates the same physiological response in the body as spontaneous laughter. So even if you're faking it when you laugh, your body does not know the difference. Therefore, you don't need to be happy to laugh and you don't need to have a reason to laugh. Even fake laughter can help relieve stress and bolster your mood.

What do we do during a Laughter session? This video features Dr Madan Kataria the founder of Laughter Yoga and show you some exercises done during sessions.


“Laughter Yoga is a simple idea: anyone can laugh for no reason all. We don't need jokes, a sense of humor or comedies to laugh,” explains Dr Madan Kataria. “We initiate laughter as an exercise in a group, and when we make eye contact with others, it soon turns into real contagious laughter.”

Dr. Kataria -the founder of Laughter Yoga- explains that: "When you start laughing, your chemistry changes, your physiology changes, your chances to experience happiness are much greater. Laughter Yoga is nothing more than prepping the body and mind for happiness."

Laughter increases the oxygen flow in the body and brain, resulting in lower blood pressure, a stronger immune system, less stress, raise feel-good endorphin, anti-aging and improve digestion and bowel movement.

Laughter releases endorphins, giving us the 'feel good factor'
Acts as aerobic exercise and is like 'internal jogging'
Unleashes inhibitions, breaks down barriers
Great team building tool encourages better communication
Helps boost our immune system which helps us resist disease
Tones muscles, improves respiration and circulation
Encourages positive thinking and creativity
Relaxes the whole body by reducing stress and tension

* Laugh your abs away!

Do you know that 1 min of laughter equals 45 min of relaxation and 15 min of walk, 10 minutes of belly laughter equal to 30 minutes on a rowing machine?

And laughing is good for our diet, it makes us more resistant to cravings!

Laughter is a great workout! Laughing works out the diaphragm, abdominal, respiratory, facial, leg, and back muscles.

    Wow, I didn't know that faux laughing worked just as well for the body! That's great!

    It is sad that we laugh so much less than we did in the past. So much for modern conveniences, eh? :P

    I read an article a few years ago about a study that used a half an hour a day of laughter via sitcoms to help people with depression. I figured it wouldn't hurt to try, so I have TiVo'd my way through "Frasier" and "Reba" so far, and am hoping to start "As Time Goes By" next.

    ABCDARIAN has a very good point.
    It's one of the aim of Laughter Yoga: reconnecting with our inner child, our first universal language, to be able to laugh without any purpose, just because it makes us feel good.
    Adults tend to laugh with their minds, and children with their bodies. We don't need jokes to laugh, we are laughing beings.

    Another great blog, MIKIIO! I had never heard of Laughter Yoga; but I'm sure familiar with my DH laughter while I do some of my yoga...does that count?

    I never heard of laughing yoga. I have not the time now to check everything out that you sent...mark my word I will.....I am always looking for a fun....workout and what could be better that laughing.

    Humor in the world has become so polluted that I don't turn on to comedy and I don't laugh enough....it is no wonder that obesity is rampant, all those calories not used...all those muscles crying out for a good belly laugh.....just getting cushioned with fat because of the lack of use.

    This makes so much sense to me. I can remember laughing till I cried. And when my sisters and I got together....we did that often. Thanks for this blog....you are my favorite. Grace
