My first 5K Run

Monday, February 23, 2009

This past Saturday I participated in my first 5K run (as an adult). I am feeling so confident in my physical abilities. I am slowly losing weight which is an added bonus but the fact that I actually RAN a 5K is Awesome. I am so proud of myself. I have been training hard and counting down the days until 2-21-09. When Saturday finally came I was overwhelmed with excitement. I couldn't belive I was lining up to start my first race. I positioned myself near the back of the crowd so I wouldn't be trampled by the elite runners and also so I wouldn't be tempted to run at a pace faster than I knew I could. I found myself nearing the actual starting line. As I crossed the starting line I started to feel this enormous rush of adrenaline over come me nearly causing me to black out. I took a few deep breaths and focused on my playlist that I created specifically for running. The darkness started to disappear and I was on my way. A few times I didn't even realize that I had my ipod on because I was enjoying the sight of runners pass me and enjoying it even more so when I passed other runners. I made one mistake. I have the Nike + chip for my shoe and ipod and I started it too soon so as I came around the last corner about a half mile from the finish line my ipod was congratulating me. Because my run on my ipod had finished I was unable to push the center button for my power song. I really wanted to kick myself. As I neared the finish line I could see one person up ahead of me. I gave it my all to pass this man. Funny thing is that this man was in the 70-99 year old category. Oh well he was a good runner for his age. LOL... I am now training to decrease my time and my next run is St. Patrick's Day. The good thing about some runs around town is they give you FREE beer at the end of your race. I might decrease my time just knowing FREE beer is waiting for me at the finish line.

Running for beer? Why couldn't they have that deal for every race? Congrats on your first race. I'm planning my first for April 18.
