A half marathon, am I crazy?

Friday, February 29, 2008

Ok, I may be crazy, but I am going to prepare for a half marathon in October! I got this email from Worldvision about teams of runners preparing and running a marathon in order to raise money for Aids orphans in Africa and I thought, why can't I do that. Ok, I weight 260 lbs and I hate to run, but I have heard lots of stories about people doing a couch to 5K or couch to half marathon before and I decided to try. If I don't try I will always wonder if I could have done it. I am going to ask some friends and family members to try to run with me. Even if they can't go to Chicago where the race I want to run is going to be, they can run in local races or just work along with me to get into shape. I am going to make a web page about my journey and ask for donations. When I get everything set up I will post a blog with a link to the webpage for anyone who wants to support me on my journey. I may not run during the the marathon, I may be walking the whole way but I am going to try. Wish me luck!

I am just bursting with pride for you sis! I so want to run, but with my missing disks, I have been told running is not a good idea. But I have a friend my same age that has had the same surgery and has started to run again! She is very small though. I think once I reach my goal weight, I may talk to a specialist about it. Maybe I will only be able to run on a track or the treadmill. Our schools around here all have those rubberized tracks.

Well, I will be praying for your success and hopefully joining you someday!

    Love ya,

Julia - You CAN do it! First - go to a store where they specialize in running shoes - like Fleet Feet. It's really important to have the right shoes - especially for us "full figured gals". They will help you and in my experience are super nice. It costs a little more - but is worth it. You will mess up your feet if you don't have good shoes. They will NOT care about your size, so don't hesitate. I felt funny going, but they were nothing but encouraging.
I've got my sights on doing a Triathlon this year. Oh - and BTW that couch to 5K plan is an excellent way to start. That's what I did late last summer to get rolling.
You go! Let's keep one another motivated - OK?

Congrats on setting a goal and taking steps to achieve it!

It's a noble cause, and you *will* cross that finish line!
