Four years ago I had a heart attack. I tried to loose weight after that but my medications made me sluggish and it took all I had to go to work and do the bare minimum to keep the house in order. Now I've moved to a warmer climate where I'm not having as many problems but and still struggling to loose weight. My goal is to get back to a healthy weight and learn how to eat to maintain that way of life.

Earlier this year I found out that I have gluten sensitivities. After being referred to the Gastroenterologist. I found out at that time that I also have an ulcer (probably brought on by the plavix). The tests for Celiac came back negative but sine the gluten free diet (which was implemented after the biopsy while I was awaiting the result) had give me immediate results on the GI problems the Doctor agreed that I have some degree of gluten sensitivity but yet not fully Celiac.

Afer 4 months of being gluten free I have found remarkable results:
The IBS symptoms vanished within a few days.
I no longer wake in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom.
The arthritis pain that I was experiencing has decreased.
I am no longer tired all of the time. I haven't had any episodes of falling asleep during the daytime.
My migraines have gone away. The only one that I have had since going gluten free has been from detoxing from caffeine.
I know there are more improvements but I can't think of them atm (when it doesn't hurt I tend to forget it and concentrate on what does hurt).

Unfortunately all the carefull attention that I've paid to my new diet have missed something. I came down with diverticulitis. I probably had diverticulosis already and the raw fruits and vegetables that I was eating helped to inflame the small intestines.

    emoticon Thalia, to the CD and GF team! OMG, you had a heart attack? How scary. I'm glad you're HERE! This site has grown A LOT since I joined; there's a wide SP world here, so take your time learning the site. I'm lower-carb and I saw you're interested in that. Consider learning about I gained 22 lbs starting w/gf diet because I didn't know about insulin resistance :P. What Barb said in the Intro thread might also be helpful - So. Beach. What works for me: lotsa veggies and fruits, more nuts/seeds. Protein. I'm not a traditional cook and my DH lives outta state so I'm cookin' for one though. I'm verry casual about my dining. Anyway, another inspiration for me is Diana Schwarzbein. Everything's on my page (and I mean EVERYTHING - LOL!)

    I'd love to learn more about your experience with your heart attack if you're open to sharing.
