I've had more lives than a cat here on Sparkpeople, but that it because it is so good here, that I can't help but keep coming back!

I had weight loss surgery on December 14th. (the Duodenal Switch procedure)

My Goals:
My goal is to be 175 lbs, which is completely realistic with the surgery I have selected. It is called the Duodenal Switch.

This operation relies on restriction, by making the stomach smaller. However, this operation leaves a complete, working, stomach instead of a pouch.

Its main way of causing weight loss, however, is through mal-absorption, where the intestines are re-routed to cause only a small portion of what is eaten to be absorbed into the bloodstream.

Therefore, it is important to eat 60-100 grams of protein a day, and to take vitamins and supplements for the rest of my life to prevent serious malnutrition.

This may seem like a drastic step, but with a high weight of 495 lbs, and re-gaining 60 lbs after losing 120 lbs the "regular" way, I know I am doing this to save my life.

My Program:
I believe in the basics of Good Nutrition, Moderation, Regular Exercise and Self Motivation.

Having weight loss surgery does not negate the importance of any of these principles at all. I will still need to watch what I eat and exercise. I simply won't be hungry while I do it.

I believe that for a person as heavy as I am, weight loss is a necessary part of improved health and it is important to look at weight loss in the context of improving my overall health.

    Lisa, just wondered if you are still on spark? If so I hope your life is going better. In the last two years I gradually gained 15 lbs. That is a bitter pill to swallow but I did it to myself. Susie and I eat healthy foods do portion control but there are those occasional slips, dinner out, birthday parties, Christmas etc. I guess it's a lifelong struggle and isn't that the truth. I have found that a slip can take months to correct and you would think a person would come to realize that and be aware but, we are human and as for myself never learn. Just wanted to touch base with you and see how you are doing. Catch you later, I have to get to fitness before I can talk myself out of it. emoticon
