Hi my name is Sandy I started this jouney it seems a lifetime ago. I remember most of my life eating whatever I wanted as much as I wanted and never getting bigger then a size 6. Back then everyone would say just wait it will catch up with you. Well after hearing that for almost 40years and nothing ever changing you tend to think your safe. Then one day you wake up and it did catch up with you!! That is what happened on my 47th birthday I was sitting at dinner in Prague with a bunch of co-workers and all of a sudden I realized. I am almost 50years old, my weight was now 175 on my 5'2" frame I smoked almost 2 packs of cigarettes a day and I hated what I saw. For the first time in my life I really did not like me what a terrible feeling. So......... first I had to quit smoking (the single most difficult thing I have ever done in my life) I gave myself a year to just focus on that. Then I set my sites on my weight. I wanted six pac abs for my 50th birthday. And I got there well I had a 4pac anyway. Was running 5k races had a back a 20yr old would kill for however, my life was about to take a big turn. I seperated from my husband of 24 years, the convention business was on the decline and I got laid off. I was in another spiral and did not know how to stop it. Well do what you have always done pull yourself up from your bootstraps and carry on. The divorce went well he and I am happier now. I have found a new love and a new job ($4.00 per hour less but a job with health benifits. I let myself gain a lot of weight before I got my feet under me. And my biggest mistake I went back to smoking again. Now I am back in charge of my own life and ready to start again. So back to spark people and back to quitting smoking, quitting pouting, quitting pitty parties for myself. I want to like me again and with your help and the help of my friends I am sure I can.

Thanks spark people I could not have done it once much less twice without you.

Yes we are so hard on our own selves and seldom take advice we give our own kids... Here's to being kinder to ourselves and learning from those lessons while continuing on the journey to better health!

Hi Sandy! I see you were on for a while around June. It has been a few yars since we met. I have been up and down a couple of times, but now I have new motivation. My daughter is getting married June 4th, 2011. PLUS I have been having some high blood pressure, so I'm going to try to do something close to the DASH diet. Hope all is well with you emoticon

It is indeed a small world. Not only am I from Michigan, my husband is from Bay City and I was raised in Gladwin. We lived in St. Charles until our move to Ludington in January, 2010. Steve taught in Merrill for 31 years; I was a school psychologist for Durand and New Lothrop. Now what are the chances that two people would connect on a website the size of SP? From your pictures, you have obviously been successful. I'm getting there. Nice to hear from you.

I just responed to another sparker who commented on my skydiving experience. I thought I'd just copy and paste to you what I told her. You might be interested. Here it is:
I thought I was going to die of fright when I was going up in the airplane. I really wanted badly to opt out. The main reason I went through with it from that point was knowing that several of my friends had come to witness my crazy deed; some coming 200 miles! I could have just rode back down in the airplane but when I pictured that in my head I felt sick with shame. I literally closed my eyes and jumped. A half a split second after I left the plane it occurred to me that if I close my eyes I would miss the greatest experience of my life so I opened them just in time to see the plane vanish up out of my sight.
One cool thing about falling from that far up is that there is no sensation of falling because you aren't passing anything. It's a little closer to like being under water. The wind pressure pushing up on my body was like being in front of a giant fan. And then, at some moment the shoot opens up and you are swinging on the tallest swing you can imagine. And the view! holy cow, the best! It was like a beautiful dream.
All in all it was over too fast.
PS: I wasn't alone. I had an experienced lady skydiver attached to my back telling me what to do and making sure we were safe the whole time and I had to go to a 30 minute instruction session before I even got to go up in the plane. Landing was a breeze.

Hey, thanks for your comment on my blog. I too was inspired to skydive by a lady just a little younger than myself in my book club who is 50 or 60 pounds overweight and not even that healthy physically. But, she is healthy in the taking-a-risk department. When she came into the meeting announcing that she had just jumped out of an airplane my heart started pounding. I thought, if she can do it so can I!! It took me a couple of years to get up the nerve but when I did it was go, go, go. I was 57 at the time. I know I could do it again even at 62.
    Have a great day!!
