It has been a year + since I've been on SparkPeople. It's been a tough year. Now it's time to start again.

A week ago I was finally given the answer to a question that's been puzzling me for 18 months. I have Reactive Hypoglycemia. It is a complication of gastric bypass surgery, but is NOT diabetes. It IS what is causing my heart to race when I eat carbs or sugar. It causes me to become "foggy", clumsy, disoriented, forgetful and CRABBY. It is a major relief to put a name to all of this as it's been alarming and uncomfortable for a long time. I've seen two cardiologists and 3 other doctors, so have ruled out many other issues to get to this point.

Now I need to learn to live within my new reality. It won't be easy. Hypoglycemia requires a low carb, no sugar, high protein diet. I have an allergy to citric acid, which (while it helps keep carbs low), limits many other healthy foods. I also have a gluten sensitivity, (which again helps with carbs) but limits many healthy sources of fiber.

Searching for my new diet will be trial and error. I certainly need all the help and support I can get on this new chapter of my life!

Read all the info I can find on hypoglycemia and find foods that will fit into my new diet plan.

My Program:
I am using a high protein, low carb approach. Sugar must be very limited.

I live in a small town in Northern MN with my husband, Pete and yellow lab, Frankie. My hubby also faces significant health problems and weight issues. Working together, we are determined to improve our health situations.

    It’s cold outside, but Spring is coming! Are you ready to join a Challenge? The Biggest Loser Challenge is looking for members for it’s next Challenge starting the first week of March.
