Hey fellow sparkers!! My name is Melanie. I am 25 years old. I live in Pittsburgh, PA, and I have been struggling with weight loss for as long as I remember. I have an amazing fiance, and I cant wait to spend the rest of my life with him. He has three daughters. They are 9,6 and 3 years old. I have really bonded with them, and I look forward to being able to not only watch them grow up, but I look forward to being able to be active and participate in their lives. I love each of them unconditionally, as if they are my own!!! I have been very active my entire life (softball, soccer, competitive swimming, to name a few), and since my weight has been getting more and more out of control, I have been forced to “sit on the sidelines”, while I deal with the arthritis in my knees and ankles.

I started thinking about and researching RNY Gastric Bypass surgery when I was approximately 16 years old. I went to a surgeon that had told me that at 16 years old, it was still experimental, and that they don’t have any long term statistics, so I decided to opt out of having this done. Having this surgery was always on my mind, and I continued to diet (and fail). I got so fed up with the roller coaster dieting!!! I didn’t have insurance until maybe a year ago, so coming up with the money was out of the question. In March of this year, now having insurance, I decided that enough is enough, I want this surgery to better my life, and I began my journey.

I went to my information seminar at UPMC MaGee Hospital here in Pittsburgh in March, and had my first weigh in with my PCP in March as well. My PCP fully supported my decision, and was familiar with the surgeon that would be doing my surgery. In June, I had my first appointment with my surgeon, and I received my list of all tests needing to be done. It was overwhelming to see all of those tests, and for a second I thought that I would never get to the end of them! Well, with the support of my fiancé, and my very loving family, I was able to cross each of them off my list one by one. I was scared of my sleep study (which I look back and laugh at myself about now!!), and it turns out that I did NOT have sleep apnea. So as I took my tests, and my results were coming back, I was sooo excited to see that each of them had come back NORMAL. When my surgeon’s office received the last of my blood work, they wanted me to go see a hematologist, just to make sure that the blood thinners they give me in the hospital will be enough, and to make sure I wont have to be on them when I get home.

Well, on Saturday October 3, I received a letter in the mail from my insurance. It was a “we are pleased to inform you that you have been approved for Gastric Bypass Surgery”. I almost fell over!!!! My heart was racing, and I wanted to cry. My fiance was so happy for me!! The following Tuesday evening I received a call from my surgeon’s office, they were calling me to schedule my surgery!!! I thought I was dreaming!!!! Well, my surgery is November 16th!!! I still cant believe it!! I have my pre-op appointment on Nov. 11, and that’s when I begin my ALL LIQUID diet until my surgery day!

UPDATE: So I am a little over 6 months out of surgery. I am down to 234 lbs from 325. I cant believe I am so close to having lost 100 lbs!! It's awesome! Excercise has become my "buddy to rely on", instead of food. I cant believe how much easier just day to day life is. I cant remember the last time I was this weight. Maybe 6th or 7th grade???
