My name is April Petrea I am a 26 years old woman from Montana who knows all to well about the co-morbities and grave illness of super morbid obesity. After having worked all of my life and doing for me and my two children, after a bitter divorce. I began to stress over how we were going to make it. I was so stressed until I mentally shutdown and isolated myself from friends and family members. I would dwell on my problems and comforted myself with food. I ate whatever I wanted whenever I wanted with no regard to the nutritional value or the lack thereof. As time passed my poor eating habits worsened and so did my physical health.I had eaten my way to be super morbidly obese. I became immobile and could no longer walk and was confined to my bed and used a manual wheelchair when it was necessary for me to go out. I could not do ANYTHING for myself and my teen children, mom, and home nursing services took care of me. Now I weighed over 600 pounds. I'm one here to lose weight and be happy and healthy and mom.

    Welcome to SP. I'm 75 years old, and for a number of years I weighed around 225 lbs. I started a lo-carb (NOT no-carb) diet. I don't eat bread, noodles, potatoes, rice, etc. BUT I do eat PLENTY of fruit and vegetables. In two years I went to my present 155 lbs. I had seen a picture of myself and that was it. Fortunately, I have a wonderful husband, who has been the cook of the house for over 5o years, but since my double mastectomy he has done everything. He has discovered cauliflower, and uses it to make fake mashed potatoes and fake fried rice. You can't tell the difference, and I no longer miss my carbs. We have fruit and nuts for dessert every day. The pounds literally melted off, at the perfect rate of about 25 lbs. a year. There is very little extra activity added to my day. We've started walking, but that's due more to the "social distancing" than to trying to do anything. We do have our own pool (We're in NC, having retired from NY) and once we open it, we swim an hour a day (weather permitting) without a stop. (We have waterproof music players and ear pods.) There are great people here to help you in any way you need it. They'll encourage you, give you advice, and if you're lucky enough to find someone local to you, they'll be able to meet you at the gym. There are groups that will be of interest to you, and some that you can just pass on. You'll laugh and possibly cry with someone. But it will always be your choice. Again, Welcome Vicki (Charna18)

    WELCOME to the Biggest Loser team!! UNLIKE the show, we do not recommend being hungry ever. Our nutritional weekly challenges help us to make changes, but not all at once. I've followed the Biggest Loser show since it first came out, and have followed many members long term, some gain it back.

    So here on SPARKPEOPLE we highly recommend NO DIETING (First 3 letters DIE) but, instead make doable changes. Yes, slowly, doable. I love your introduction, in it you know what triggered the self not love. But, you also have that FIGHTING SPIRIT!! WOOHOO to that!! This is NOT EASY but is it DOABLE????

    I started at 288 and much like you, I used a power chair for the most part. I could walk a little bit, but not much. The pain was UNREAL. Slowly I made changes. If you drink soda, to stop it cold turkey is an ideal thing but realistic? NO not really. I SLOWLY Cut back, once I got down to 2 cans a day (was 6 to 8 a day)I changed from regular pepsi, to diet. FINALLY I started to substitute diet non cola's, than to sparkling water and added in regular water ,, now I am just sparkling water (with food, I have a hard time swallowing still) and water for the rest. I MIGHT have a diet soda once every few months. Benefits of this change/? I hadn''t realized the HIGH ANXIETY was in part ALL of the caffeine, I THOUGHT I needed to function. Nah, it was holding me BACK!!

    Fast food? I Still did it at first, as much as I was, only I started to cut back an 1/8th of what I normally ate. Again I DID NOT GO HUNGRY!! That's so important to those of us who LOVE TO EAT!! I found I stayed full by adding in healthier stuff for snacks, well for SOME SNACKS. So instead of a sweet or unhealthy food for all 3 or 4 snacks (at that time) I'd have something that I LIKED (Yogurt, cottage cheese, cheese I AM NOT a veggie, nor fruit person, if you are YEAH!! YOu'l have it easier than I DO!) for 1 of those snacks.

    I had been eating a TON of sandwiches too, I found that I liked some healthier breads, so I used those. Just make small changes at first, this will still have you losing nicely, but will help you to not go crazy on binge out for days on end.

    Please be patience with yourself as you are with your children. Be kind to yourself. If you find yourself saying not so nice things to yourself, especially about food, exercise (lack of) that'll only hurt you. Badly. If you are not currently in therapy it may be something worth the while considering. I still am, though at this point there are many sessions we just shoot the breeze. If you do not have a therapist, or one you can really relate to, there are many who can come to our homes. Though I am fully mobile now, I do it this way. I am more comfy here than in some office.

    For exercise, just at first moving your legs every half hour or hour, but NOT TO MUCH so that you injure yourself, is a GREAT START!! Moving your arms up off the bed,couch etc, is also a start. Once you find your movements become easier, you can add a 1 lb weight in. Have you honestly talked openly to your Dr about this? Can they have PT come to the house to help you as long as you really work with the PT? Hey it's NOT EASY.

    The coming to like yourself at some point will help you the most.

    Please, Please be realistic with this. Rome wasn't built in a day. We didn't get big in one day ,, it's not going to come off fast as we hope.

    I've been at this for an EON of years, with 18 surgeries since joining Sparks, it's been so slow for me to get this right. BUT ITS THERE and you CAN do this too, with support. That's whats makes SPARKS SO AWESOME, Support.

    I'm now at 171 (I had gone UP to 179 again, back down to 168,,,, see there's no perfection, only progress) I walk EASILY 3 miles at a time, I am off ALL but one med (I had been on,, gulp 23!) that one is for a brain surgery I had a stent put in (aneurysm that had been accidentally discovered and the stent put in 2 years ago). TA DA!!

    BUT still let's be realistic, I DID damage my body with being a diabetic, and some of that lingers. It's OKAY with me, I'm doing things again i never ever thought I'd do. I have neuropathy, my legs and feet are totally numb. I had to learn to trust they are going where I want them, by the way the rest of my body is going. If I am going face forward, I had better get my feet right and I DO!! So please be realistic thru this, but DREAM BIG!!! DREAM Of something way down the line you'd like to do. BUT!! Also DREAM about what you'd like to do in a week. If for instance, it's hard to move your leg more than 2% side ways, DREAM about moving it to the 3% Angle next week. AND CELEBRATE each tiny bit you can!! With a NON FOOD reward. I print out shapes usually 6 on a piece of paper. As I hit my weekly goals I color them in, paint them in, sticker them to death. it's cheap, but it makes me see progress. ANd if I DO NOT have any progress that's OKAY TOO!!! Progress, not perfection.
