How can you live in Japan and not eat rice? It can be difficult at times, but I've managed to do it. And not just rice - noodles, bread, and most other carbs are also on my no-go list. It does make going out to eat more of a challenge, since I need to figure out if the place will have anything I can consume, but it's been great for my health - I feel so much more energetic, my skin problems have cleared up, and overall I just feel so much better. Who knew all that pasta and chocolate was so bad for me (and not just for my weight)? ;-)

My Goals:
Eat small meals full of protein and veggies.
Get at least 10,000 steps in a day.
Start a weight training program.
Be mindful of what and when I eat.
Don't let stalls or bad days derail my progress.

My Program:
Eating right, everyday.
Exercising consistently, and setting new challenges.
Keeping the larger goal in mind.

Personal Information:
I'm a Canadian living in Japan, and I always gain weight here, and lose when I leave. However, over the last 7 years I gained about 10 pounds a year, and I finally had enough. I've taken control of my life - I cut everything I don't need out of my diet (as the title says - no more rice, plus pasta, bread, added sugar, and alcohol). This carb restriction has been great for me and over the past 7 months I have lost nearly 90 pounds. I still have at least another 40 pounds to go (to get to a healthy BMI) and I am making my way there, slowly but surely.

Other Information:
Photography is my biggest passion - I would do it full-time if I could. I also love to travel, and love to plan for my next vacation(s). I've been to over 40 countries so far, I'm hoping to hit 50 within the next couple of years.

Hi, Moose! I added you because I can relate. I just moved back to the US after living in Japan for 6 years. I went to Japan skinny and for the first 4 years there maintained that weight. But gradually began to gain weight thanks to a mixture of the daily kyuushoku (給食) and being tempted by Ginza cakes at the local eki.:p Now I'm trying to get back to the weight I was before I left for Japan.

Hey Moose, Thanks for making me a Spark Friend. I walked to one of the big shrines in Fukuoka yesterday, but today it's just too cold and windy here to stick my nose out to walk after 6 hours in an unheated gym with my son's jr. high school basketball team. Brrrrrr! emoticon
