    It's a bit of a surprise to be notified of a new comment on a blog from last May; but I suppose that's what I get for posting a link on a forum without high volume.

    To answer the training question, I didn't really train for Buffalo. I was doing long runs assigned to a local half and full marathon program while trying to stay in perpetual shape to run a half, because I had 5 half marathons scheduled in 2015. But I figured if I tried to run the full marathon distances, that would help prepare me for an eventual marathon. After I ran 20 miles with a buddy who was training for Pittsburgh, my running buddies kind of pushed me into registering for Buffalo.

    I had good intentions of doing some speed work, but we had an awful winter in Rochester and the weather was always an excuse. I ended up not doing any speed work that didn't require an entry fee. In hindsight, I don't think the lack of speed work was any big deal for a first marathon.

    I think I learned two lessons from Buffalo. First, I needed better electrolyte replacement to avoid the cramps at the end. I've got a solution for that, but I won't know for sure if it's good enough till I get through another marathon. Water and GU were sufficient to get me through half marathons, but now I run with Nuun as well as water and GU.

    Second, I didn't have a strong enough base of running miles for Buffalo. I peaked at 41 miles the week of my 22 mile long run. I finished the marathon, but I was pretty beat up. I didn't really appreciate how beat up I was for a couple months afterward. I've corrected the weak base issue. Even repeat marathon runners think I'm running enough miles now.

    For Boston, I have a formal and somewhat aggressive marathon training program. I've needed to back off the assignments a few times for more recovery or to prepare for races in the interim. I'll find out how well this works out at Boston; my sense 8 days out is that I am much better prepared for Boston than I was for Buffalo.
