I have been on my healthy lifestyle journey since Nov 2005. I lost 50 lbs by May 2006, but gained 10- 15 lbs back by January 2007 due to being pregnant, having a miscarriage and dealing with that loss. I was trying to lose the extra I had gained, but became pregnant again. I am happy to share that I give birth to a healthy little boy, Liam on April 10, 2008. I was always about 10-15lbs away from my goal and then I became pregnant again! Chelsey joined us on September 10, 2010. So now that we are done having children, my goal is to lose this pregnancy weight and be back to where I was in May 2006.

For those interested in how I lost 50 lbs, gained some major muscle and finally felt good about my body again, I give you......

The secrets to my success:

- Stop drinking your calories! Eat the piece of fruit vs the juice in one- two gulps. Stop drinking alcohol when in weight loss mode and try not to resort to meal replacement drinks too often. They never really satisfy you.

- Measure EVERYTHING!!! I believe that just measuring out my cereal, milk & salad dressing alone, has made most of the difference. I measure everything out (or eyeball it because I am so used to the portions now). It is the single most easiest way to lose weight. Now I don't eat 3-4 tmes the suggestive serving and then wonder why I am not losing weight even though I am eating healthy food!

-Write it down! I kept a food diary and recorded every single morsel of food that passed through my yap for 6 months. It was extremely helpful in keeping me motivated because I really wanted to write down good, healthy food. (In case anyone ever read it) I also was very meticulous about staying within calorie range because it was there in black & white (well, actually it was blue pen and beige paper- haha!)

-Exercise nearly everyday. I started out with strength training & cardio on alternate days (6-7 days a week)

-Give yourself a break. I had a "no counting" (calories) day at least once a month. It was nice to just eat whatever I felt (especially on special occasions) and not worry about calories or amounts. Although, eventually I ended up measuring out the treats to the suggestive serving!!! Oh well, it's a great healthy habit to have even when not eating healthy food.
It's also worth mentioning that this is a lifestyle, not a temporary plan. Going over your calorie range when your PMSing or skipping one workout because you are sick or have to attend to something out of the ordinary WILL NOT undo all the hard work that you have done. Just get right back to healthy choices as soon as you can. That may be the next day or the next meal, but get back at it.

- Listen to your body (and your friends). Once I got around to the weight I am now, people started commenting that I was getting too skinny or asking me if I was bulimic/ anorexic. At first I was quite offended by this. I realized some people become jealous/ intimidated by a person who is becoming healthy and say discouraging things, but after hearing the concerns a few too many times, I really considered what I looked like and how I felt and ON MY OWN decided that I liked what I saw and made the decision to maintain my weight.

A little bit more about me: I am 5'9" tall, a Gemini, love running, camping and fishing. Married to my soulmate (& highschool sweetheart), and am a 12 hour shift worker.
