In April of 2011 I was admitted to the hospital with pneumonia. I had some very serious complications that required surgery to remove infection from around my lung. I spent 1 week in intensive care and a total of 3 weeks in the hospital. My surgeon said I was one of the sickest patients he had treated in a long time. While in the hospital I was also diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and told my blood pressure was dangerously high. I weighed 333 pounds. I left the hospital feeling very blessed to be alive and knew I had to make some significant changes in my life or it would be too late to correct the damage I was doing to my body. After recovering from my surgery and completing physical therapy to gain my strength back, I joined a gym in July and began working with a personal trainer. At the time, I weighed 290 pounds. Before joining the gym and beginning strength training, I struggled to walk even one block. I was taking insulin shots to control my diabetes and medicine for my high blood pressure. My trainer helped me make changes to my diet, showed me how to improve my level of fitness, and provided the support and encouragement I needed to stay committed to a healthier lifestyle. Nine months after surgery I have lost over 130 pounds and I am no longer taking any medication for my diabetes. My blood sugars are consistently normal and controlled by diet and exercise. I have significantly reduced the amount of medication needed to control my blood pressure and it is well within normal range. My time on the treadmill has increased from 15 minutes a day to an hour a day and now I can easily walk for 3 miles. I have also started running and I am looking forward to hopefully running a 5K in the spring. Losing weight and becoming more fit has had a huge impact on all areas of my life. Simple everyday activities were a challenge for me. It used to be so difficult just to stand up out of a chair, climb the stairs, get up off the floor, and to simply carry a basket of laundry. Now I have the strength to do all of those things with very little extra effort. I have also been told by so many people how much happier I seem to be now. I am continuing to work hard to lose more weight and improve my strength. I hope to reach my goal weight by the summer of 2012.

My Goals:

My Program:
Exercise and eating right have been the key to success for me. Currently, I exercise for an hour and 30 minutes 6 days a week. I am a type 2 diabetic so I eat a very low-carb diet that includes many vegetables and lean proteins. I try to avoid most processed foods and eat regularly every 3 hours or so. This has really helped to control my cravings and keep my hunger in check.

Personal Information:
My name is Lesley and I am a first grade teacher in the state of Missouri. I am the legal guardian for two wonderful teenage girls. This past year has been an incredible journey as I learned how to lose weight and become more fit.
