My name is Laurel and I am a 29-year-old working mom living in Des Moines, Iowa. I am doing my best to be healthy so that I live to be 100 years old to see great-grandchildren and maybe great-great if I'm REALLY lucky!! Looking to get pregnant with #2 probably sometime in the near future (spring 2011?), not sure exactly when. I'd like to lose some more weight first but I realize that fertility has its ups and downs so I don't want to wait too long!

I have been trying harder to spend more time on SparkPeople, because when I do, I seem to stay more motivated to make healthy choices. I love having and being a support network for other Sparkers. I have met a lot of wonderful people and there are so many I haven't met yet, I know. Send me a message, add me as a friend if you like!

My weight troubles started in high school and have been up and down ever since, so that's about 10+ years now. I was never really very heavy in high school but I got into the "overweight" category for a while. My ideal weight right now for my height and body type is 130-150. I would happily live my life at 150-155 if that's where my body felt healthy. In 2005-2006 I lost 25+ pounds on Weight Watchers and maintained and kept off most off for quite a long time. And then, sadly, this past year I have hit my all-time high where I feel I would like to lose about 100 pounds. It seems I am an emotional eater (who's not?). Not necessarily one that feeds my face but more eats larger portions than I should.

On March 13, 2009 my 23-year-old brother Steven passed away. It is the worst and hardest thing that has happened to me. But I am both grieving the loss of one of my best friends and celebrating his life. I am letting myself both cry and laugh. And, I started a Spark team called Loss of a Loved One to Suicide. It is growing, which is sad that others are suffering the same thing, but good that we have another support system in our lives.

In regards to both my weight loss journey and my LIFE, if I can do a lot of little things, I know it adds up! Then they turn into big things. Plus, the little things help us build MOMENTUM!!!

Anyway, I really like meeting people on here so if you think we'd get along, just say hello!! I want more positive people in my life, more people with similar goals and interests too. We will all grow together and learn together.

    Nails In The Fence

There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. His Father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence.

The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence.

Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence. Finally the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all.

He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper.

The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone.

The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence.. He said, 'You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. But It won't matter how many times you say I'm sorry, the wound will still be there. A verbal wound is as bad as a physical one.

Remember that friends are very rare jewels, indeed.

They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend an ear, they share words of praise and they always want to open their hearts to us.

Please forgive me if I have ever left a 'hole' in your fence.
