I am a 35 year old wife to the most fabulous and supportive husband and the mother of a beautiful and intelligent 13 year old girl and the sweetest 1 year old boy! I want to stay committed to a healthier lifestyle to be healthy and to be able to keep up with my kids and also to ensure that I put an end to the cycle of obesity in my family. February 5, 2010 Heres my story: From the day I was born Ive always been larger than average, I weighed 9lbs 15oz. Looking back at pictures I became officially overweight at around 7 years old. In my memories I really noticed it once I hit 9 years old in the fourth grade. I dont know if I would say I was exactly fat, but I was definitely overweight, much larger than my classmates. When I got to be 12 (7th grade) it really bothered me, so my mom and I joined weight watchers, but that was short lived. In high school I was definitely fat and about double the size of my friends. It wasnt their fault, but sometimes it would hurt my feelings to go shopping with them because they would try on a 3 or a 4 and they would say something like, oh my gosh this is way to big for me, its huge, when I was wearing like a 14 or 16, if they considered their 3 or 4 huge then what did they consider me? I never got to do things that most teenage girls do like borrow each others clothes because I couldnt fit theirs and they couldnt fit mine. Even my feet were much larger so we couldnt even borrow each others shoes. I didnt know what to do and didnt have any guidance because over the years my parents had become obese, so if they couldnt help themselves how could they help me? After high school I was constantly busy and didn't plan or pack my food, which meant I was constantly eating fast food all the time and rarely if ever did I exercise so of course I gained more weight. At 21 I got pregnant with my daughter I was at about 230lbs or so. Just before I found out I was pregnant, a friend of mine (who was my age and pregnant) got toxemia and it killed her and her baby. I was so scared that would happen to me and my baby so I completely changed my eating habits. During my pregnancy I actually lost weight and then maintained, so when I had my daughter I was actually 15lbs lighter than when I got pregnant. I maintained at about 215-220 for about a year, but then I ended up becoming a single mother and my schedule went crazy again. I went back to working 2 jobs and back to terrible eating habits and not taking care of myself. At 25 I was at about 250lbs or so and my sister was going to get married so we decided we needed to lose weight. I ended up taking diet pills and I worked out at a gym and I did lose about 30lbs. But as soon as I stopped taking the pills and eventually I couldnt afford the gym, I again gained it all back and then some. My heaviest was at 27 when I joined Spark People, I was at 261lbs. I heard about SP on TV and decided to check it out. Ive technically been a member for 2 years now, but I didnt really take full advantage of it until the last couple of months. There really is a lot of information and tools to use and Im glad I found them. After the 1st year I had only lost about 7lbs because my heart and mind really werent into it. I stayed in the 250s FOREVER. I found out in 2010 that I have Hypothyroidism and I take Synthroid. That was the extent of my health problems until this year when I had a health scare, I was told I had dysmetabolic syndrome. My doctor basically told me that if I didnt eat right, exercise and lose weight I would develop high blood pressure, diabetes, a fatty liver, eventually heart disease and ultimately an early death. I didnt and dont want any of those things so I took him seriously. Ive changed my eating habits and Ive began to exercise here and there. I havent eaten fast food in over a month now, with the exception of Subway, but I dont really consider that to be fast food. I now plan all of my meals for the week. On Saturday or Sunday I sit down, usually with my daughter, and we plan what were going to have for dinner each night of the week. Then we make a shopping list and we buy everything we need. It works out really well and at 7 shes learning how to plan her meals and what proper meals should look like. I dont have a complete exercise schedule yet, I try to get in exercising here and there, but I want a regimen. One of the things Ive started doing for exercise is when my daughter and I go shopping we race from the car to the store and when were leaving we do the same thing. Its fun, my daughter enjoys trying to beat me and we get a little burst of exercise but it doesnt even seem like it. We also race to our mailbox to get the mail and back. I also try to get on the treadmill at work for 15mins in the morning and 15mins in the afternoon, it doesnt always happen though. And what Im really trying to make a habit is waking up early and working out before work. Im not a morning person at all so this is a real challenge, but the times Ive done it I actually feel really good through out the day. I figure all of the little things Im doing do add up, but I do want more of a schedule. So far since December Ive gone from 254lbs to 238lbs. Hopefully I wont be in the 230s for long, I got stuck in the 240s for about a month! Im just excited to be living healthy! I want to be healthy and stay healthy, not only for myself but for my daughter. She deserves a healthy mother and she deserves to be healthy herself and not follow the path of obesity that I did. I want her to grow up thinking that eating healthy and exercising is something that is part of normal everyday life, not something that she has to work towards. It shouldnt have to be difficult and Im not letting it be difficult anymore. You think its convenient to eat fast food, but whats convenient about being obese and developing health problems? Nothing! Update 08/17/2010: So its been just over 6 months since I last updated my page and just over 8 months since I started my lifestyle change once and for all! Its amazing; Im at 210lbs now, several sizes smaller, healthier, fitter, looking and feeling better than I have in years! Its funny because this time I knew something was going to be different, I could feel it. I told my sister that the stars have finally aligned properly for me! LOL! Thats the only thing I could come up with to explain how its happening this time when it didnt before. I guess really its more than besides wanting it, I know that I need it. Death at an early age has become a reality to me. I guess before at a younger age it wasnt so real, it was something that happened to other people, older people and something I wasnt concerned about. Now I know that the lifestyle choices we make do have an impact on our mortality. I do not want to die prematurely! I want to live a long and healthy life! Im working towards that. Im now 44lbs down since Christmas 09 and 51lbs down since my heaviest in 2008 when I joined SP. I started out doing around a 19 or 20 minute mile and today I did my fastest time of 12mins 29secs, I dont think I even did that in middle school!!! Now my main focus is to get out of the 200s once and for all!!! I know I can do it! UPDATE Oct 2 1010: So in the same amount of time it takes someone to have a baby, I've lost the equivalent of a small child! I've lost 55lbs in about 9 1/2 months and 62lbs total since joining SP in 2008. I'm now 199! I've set my next major goal at 169. We'll see what happens after that once I get to it. I would say wish me luck, but I don't need it! 11/3/2010- No longer Obese, officially Overweight (196lbs)! UPDATE June 20 2011: So at the beginning of April I was diagnosed with MS! I was super upset and scared at 1st, but I'm the type of person that if I can't change something I don't stress and since I can't change it, I'm not stressing over it. It would be a waste of time and energy! It's definitely taken some getting used to and some adjustments but I'm getting there. The hardest part has been trying to figure out how to workout and not overheat myself! I still haven't figured that one out! Here's what I weighed in at at the end of every month in 2010, weight BMI and lbs lost. Jan 31st 240/36.5 -14lbs Feb 28th 235/35.7 -5lbs Mar 31st 229/34.8 -6lbs Apr 30th 222/33.8 -7lbs May 31st 219/33.1 -3lbs June 3oth 216/32.8 -3lbs July 31st 213/32.4 -3lbs Aug 31st 204/31.0 -9lbs Sep 30th 202/30.7 -2lbs Oct 31st 197/30.0 -5lbs Nov 30th 191/29 -6lbs Dec 31st 187/28.4 -4lbs UPDATE 05/23/2013: So I haven't been as active on here as I should. When I was diagnosed with MS in April 2011 I had weighed in at 175. Within probably 4 months or so, I wasn't exercising regularly and I gained a little over 20lbs. It's been a learning process with MS. While I haven't lost the 20+ lbs, I am proud to say that I've been maintaining my weight in the 190's for almost 2 years now. To me that's a huge accomplishment as so many people gain back all their weight and then some. I've pretty much kept my nutrition the same, all in moderation, I still do not drink soda and I try to stay away from fried foods. I know I don't do as well as I could and I need to really get back in the swing of things! I'm hoping to re-ignite my spark. I want to get back down to 175, my visit there was short lived and I didn't get to enjoy it! That was the smallest I've ever been in my adult life!

My Program:
I have stopped eating fast food. I was a fast food junkie, almost every night we would eat out, and I've cut out soda, because of course when you eat out it comes with a soda. I'm now eating primarily chicken and turkey and staying away from red meat. I'm trying to just eat healthier in general. I eat 5 or 6 times a day, 3 small meals plus snacks. I have found this works the best for me. I still eat sweets but in moderation.

Current Exercise:
Get in exercise whenever and wherever I can!
