I'm going to use this page to log my weight loss journey. Hopefully 'going public' will be yet another incentive for me to stick with the changes I am making to lose weight and be healthier. If doing this also gives a Spark member support all the better!!

Ten years or so ago, I was very content with my weight, I was about 130 lbs. So what happened? Well like all of us, my metabolism slowed a bit with age, but I also hit some bumps in the road along the way.

The first was in late 1998 when I quit smoking and gained 70+ pounds, I say 70 + because after I hit 212 lbs I refused to get on the scale anymore, but I know I got heavier, my clothes did not lie. During this time it seemed that no matter how hard I tried the weight just kept packing on, almost as if I had no control over it.

It didn't help that I was working anywhere from 50 to 100 hours a week in 1999 getting computer systems ready for the Y2K conversions, and my company would bring in meals to keep us there. So I was not making my normal food choices and not getting to the gym.

Shortly after in 2001 I found out my father had a terminal type of cancer and my focus was on him, rather than on taking care of myself. This focus I will never regret, but it was just a delay in making changes and eating correctly. I lost him in 2003 and made a promise to him to be a healthier person.

For the year after I lost my Dad, I started to increase my activity by walking more, first it was just around my block, gradually I would include another block, then another. Soon I was including hiking, and then worked up into taking fun classes at the gym like yoga and belly dancing. I find that if I make the exersize fun and interesting, it keeps me going. One of the best things you can do is let yourself have fun when exersizing.

I had made a promise to quit smoking again, and I did that in honor of my Dad on May 2004, a year after losing him. This was not easy, because I was using those cigarettes as an antidepressant of sorts, and worried about the large amount of weight I had gained the first time.

In 2005, my 14 year relationship broke up, it seemed then that all the men in my life were gone and I was feeling so alone. I chose to be a survivor and use a sense of humor to get thru, I'd even joke about the 175 lbs I lost overnight (my ex) and continue exersizing to feel better about myself.

Well, now in 2006, I am happily 2 years smoke free and a few pounds lighter (about 30) than I was in 2000. Now it's time to put my focus fully on eating well and getting the exersize in high gear to get rid of this remaining weight.

So I intend to use this page to log what changes I am making and how it affects my weight (and my life), I will post pictures to go along with the weight shortly.

2000 - Over 212 lbs
2006 -July 183 lbs
