I currently live in western Maryland. I love my mini dachshund, bats, hiking, geocaching, birding, traveling, cross-stitching, reading, and playing video games (yay Wii!)

I joined SparkPeople because I am ready to change!

I have wanted to change for a long long time, but I did not know how. I have always been a large girl. I don’t remember ever being happy with my shape, even as far back as middle school. In high school I almost didn’t go to prom because dress shopping was a nightmare. My wonderful mother saved me there by making my dress. Since high school, I’ve just continued to get bigger. For the last decade, I’ve fluctuated around 240, going down a bit in summer and up a bit in winter. I’m a biologist, so my summers usually consist of fieldwork, which keeps me active. When winter comes around, I spend months in front of the computer analyzing data.

I’ve wanted to eat healthier for years, but didn’t know how. I’ve also sporadically tried to exercise, even joining a gym on occasion, but it never lasted. Now, my sister has introduced me to SparkPeople. Hurray for knowledge! I know it will be difficult, but I truly believe it can happen! I will become a healthier me!
My biggest challenge is sugar. I have a huge sweet tooth. If there is any candy/cookies/cake around, I will eat it. I don’t seem to have the ability to ration sweet food. If I buy a bag of chocolates with the intention of allowing myself one a day, I will eat the entire bag. Instead of sugar, I’m trying healthier options such as teas (I really like mint tea), fruit, and yogurt/fruit smoothies. If I am careful not to go grocery shopping while I’m hungry, I can control my sweet tooth while in the store. If I don’t have cookies in my apartment, I won’t eat any. :)

My reasons for wanting to change:
1. I want to be happy when I look in the mirror
2. I want to prevent diabetes – I am already insulin-resistant
3. I want to feel physically stronger and more coordinated
4. I want to get back into dating, and find true love
5. I want to buy a swimming suit again, and actually wear it
6. I want to prove to myself that I can do this!

As a reward, each time I lose 5 lbs I will treat myself to a day of geocaching to pick up a caches in a new county.

My initial goal is to be under 200 lbs. I would like to be even lower than that, but that will be a major milestone for me.

My Program:
Track my food daily and drink 8 glasses of water a day. No foods are off-limits, but I will focus on eating healthy foods.

I started Couch to 5K on Feb 3rd! As of July 1st, I can run for 30 minutes, though very slowly. It has taken me 6 months to get through the program, but I have stuck with it! Yipee!
