I am 53, healthy, but (or and) deeply interested in the art and science of healthy eating. I'm convinced that getting a fix on diet and nutrition will make me not only a healthier, but also a happier, and life-giving, creative, contributing person. I also am working on making medium distance running a fixture in my life.

I have been following a gluten-free diet since Jan. 1 of 2012. Increasingly my family and I are going in a primal diet direction. I'm trying to fold this into a larger perspective where healthy eating (organic, whole, and if possible locally produced foods) is not only for my personal benefit, but also a small way to help build a better society by supporting health and an ethos of sustainability on a large scale. Over time I've become more aware of and concerned/passionate about the politics of food and nutrition as well.

I truly enjoy running and have done four half-marathons between 9/11/11 (yes, really) and March 2013, as well as a sprinkling of 10ks, 5ks, and an 8-mile trail run. I run in a minimalist fashion and have been influenced by the "Chi running" approach. I hope to continue this for the rest of my life. I do enjoy trail running when I have the chance and have had some beautiful times in the hills of N. Idaho as well as along the bank of the Snake River. Mostly, though, I train on the backroads of wheat country here in E. Washington.

I have been a follower of Jesus since college, way back in the day, and am on an ever-evolving path to understand and practice my faith in real life.

My Goals:
I am becoming a relatively proficient medium-distance runner (up to half-marathon) using minimalist running technique and am now exploring trail running. I want to learn more about strength training. Always educating myself more on diet, nutrition, and running. Get into the habit of stopping to center during the day.

My Program:
Mixing running and strength training throughout the week. Always have a nutrition or food culture book to work on. Get enough sleep!

Personal Information:
History teacher in Eastern WA state. Especially likes the history of popular religion, modern war, and collective memory and commemorations.

Homeschooling Dad, house-churching Jesus follower.

Going gluten-free and exploring low-carb and paleo diets.

Trying to become a decent distance runner. Greatly enjoying the increased fitness and vitality.

Next goal is regular meditation.

Other Information:
"On a flat road runs the well-train'd runner,//He is lean and sinewy with muscular legs,//He is thinly clothed, he leans forward as he runs,//With lightly closed fists and arms partially rais'd."
-- Walt Whitman, "The Runner"

"Bring me my Bow of burning gold;
Bring me my Arrows of desire:
Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold!
Bring me my Chariot of fire!

I will not cease from Mental Fight,
Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand:
Till we have built Jerusalem,
In Englands green & pleasant Land."
- From the hymn "Jerusalem" based on a poem by William Blake and the inspiration for the title of the film "Chariots of Fire"

I LOVE reading what you have eaten and how you feel cos I so want to do this full throttle but seem to get so far for few days and then I falter. Hard when you have a family that noone is doing it, well my son was totally into it all, has the cookbook, etc as he has crohns but he is working 2 jobs, 2 babies etc. so has to find time to cook and have stuff ready. Hoping in the new year when his 2nd job isnt as demanding. his first is enginering stuff with a an avac co. and for now his 2nd is best buy in puters and tvs sooo busy season.
I am taking the time today to find some paleo desserts other than the date, almond, cocount balls that I make. that is my go to if I need a sweet when I am being compliant.
But not sure I like the word compliant, cos I want it to be a normal healthy lifestyle, veggies, meat and good for you carbs.

I think you should aim for 110...at least! :-)

We are actually having a quiet weekend--just one old beagle girl, an old Bichon frisse and our little guy, Max. Tuesday we get a chihuahua and Wednesday a sweet old shep mix, then a Welsh terrier and her housemate, a chocolate lab. We don't have a kennel. All the dogs stay in the house with us. We've had a really busy summer with 6-8 dogs most days. We haven't had a day off since April. Taking the month of November off to travel. Haven't decided where we're going yet. If the weather is decent we might hitch up the Boler and hit the road for Washington, Oregon, California and the SW.
