Hi, I'm Helen! I live in a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
I've been overweight probably since grade school. I was the youngest child in my family, and my favorite activities growing up were reading and eating. I have an old picture of my self sitting at the kitchen table eating Doritos and reading a book, and I joke about it, but those were probably my two main hobbies. I've half-heartedly tried to lose weight a few times, I had goals such as "I want to be skinny when i start my senior year of high school," and when each of the goal times came and went, I would extend them to another future date.
In December of 2009, after a few years of feeling like crap, I was diagnosed with gluten intolerance, and on January 15, 2010, I went gluten-free. Also on that date, I weighed myself for the first time in probably years, and I weighed 167.4 lbs, which was 8 pounds away from having an obese BMI! I always knew I was overweight, but I hadn't realized how far I was slipping, and I would've never considered myself to be nearly obese.
Going gluten-free was a drastic change for me. Since my diet was changing so much, I decided it was the perfect time to also eat better portion sizes and less snacks and such. Also in January, my sister got engaged, and I was going to be her bridesmaid. So with these two things, I decided that now was the time to seriously lose the weight. I didn't want to be fat in the wedding pics, and I wanted to feel cute in my dress. {Also, what I didn't mention earlier was that my sister's wedding was one of those vague goal times I had, after the "senior year of high school" or the "graduating high school" goals didn't work, to lose the weight by, but I thought I had lots of time for that, so the engagement came as a wake-up call.}
By the wedding, exactly 4 months later, I had lost 10.4 pounds.
When I started losing the weight, I was mainly focusing on my eating habits and portions. Currently I am working on the exercise part, trying to make it a regular habit. I struggle with binge eating, and am currently trying to work on some emotional stuff with that.
If anyone needs a Sparkbuddy to help motivate and encourage them, I'm looking for the same! If you relate to any part of my journey, if you want to share some advice, or if you want to know anything else, just ask!
