Good questions! The bicros is not #1 option. Aides in both ears is the 1st step. From the testing done yesterday, it seems that the hearing aide in the right ear (the worst ear) will help. Right now the hearing is @ 25%. That stinks. With the hearing aid I tried, it was up to up to 45%. That a good affect! The left ear hearing is 45-48% and with the hearing aide IT got to 85%. That’s fantastic. The right ear would never be that good, but with both ears boosted, I’d be a whole lot better off than I am right now.

I had a ton of ear infections as a kid. They didn’t do the myringotomy (tubes in the ears) like they do now. They just put an ‘x’ in the ear drum and let the infection drain. Scar tissue, of course, on the ear drum was the result. That, of course decreases hearing.

THEN I developed otosclerosis (basically osteoarthritis) of the stapes bone (3 bones in the ear – the stapes is the middle bone – it conducts sound through the ear canal on it’s path to the speech ctr. in the brain.) Anyhow, when osteoarthritis of that bone develops, the bone can’t move and do it’s job. They replace it with a titanium prosthesis. I had to have it done twice. That IS a surgical possibility, but the Dr. indicated that he’d only give me a 50/50 chance that it would better the hearing in the right ear. AND on the downside, it could make it worse, can make tinnitus worse, can make dizziness more of a problem. All of which, I am not thinking I want to entertain @ tis point. IF nothing else worked, I might consider it, but not till then.

And yes, the bicros is a wireless system, so if there’s a problem, you’re in trouble.

For all those reasons, sounds like 2 hearing aides are the way to go w/both ears. IF the hearing aide turns out to be a fail, then that hearing aide would be exchanged for the bicros. And then it would be onto a cochlear implant. I don’t think so!

So, long road to go yet. But got m traveling shoes good to go.

We’ll financially figure it out. And the audiologist is aware of the cost, too (obviously) so she is open to all kinds of arrangements. So, we feel comfortable we’ll be all right. Just not something we counted on.

    HUGS to you! You’re sweet.

As for your loss, that’s great! It is an up and down journey, that’s for sure.

Thursday: Had a good meeting w/the audiologist! She surprised me. She feels I would do well w/2 hearing aides. The other option is a hearing aide in the left ear and a device called a Bicros in right ear. That transfers sound to the hearing aide in the right ear. At this point, though, she feels the hearing in the right ear would be better supported w/a hearing aide. Soooooo . . . . mucho dinero. We’ll see what happens. Have another appointment in 2 weeks and will get more details. Onward. Looking @ finances.

More snow. Looks like snow the next 3 days.

    Thursday already. OH boy.

    Here’s to a thrilling Thursday.
