"Basing a weight-loss effort on willpower does the very things to your mind and body that are virtually certain to make you fatter in the long run."
Martha Beck, _The Four-Day Win_: A must-read for anyone who has ever dieted enough to start overthinking it.

Notes from past successes:
I have immersed myself in weight loss without becoming obsessed. I study the mindset of appropriate eating. I kicked up my exercise and started running. Accumulating SparkPoints keeps me focused.
I challenge thoughts, patterns, and conventional diet wisdom. I eat cookies, deliberately, once in awhile, like I picture thin people doing, without obsession. I actively work to counter dichotomous thinking: "good food"/"bad food," "on program"/"off program." I'm also trying to take away judgments of right and wrong in my eating. These things are a process, and I'm not fully there yet.
I used to game the system. I'd see how much sweet stuff I could cram into my allotted units for the day. Even though I knew I was only hurting myself, the urge to rebel was overwhelming. Martha Beck's _The Four-Day Win_ is changing my thinking. I'm learning to watch my desires and reactions. I try to catch slips and slides early.
I long ago accepted that exercise is a lifelong activity. Now I just need to do that with eating an appropriate amount of food.

A motivating exercise from the Judith Beck book: I wrote my reasons for wanting to lose weight on the backs of old business cards. I notice I lost the most weight when I was reading them daily.
