Sounds weird, I know - but when you dig down under the surface, the scary thing for many of us is to reach our goals of weight loss. Getting healthy, and in many cases this means getting thinner, means we can no longer hide behind the weight and the image that we have been carrying around with us. It means putting ourselves out there where people might see us and comment. It means revealing our uncertainties and going to the gym, or trying that new class anyway. It means changing our lives -- and that can be a scary thing. But I am ready!

I have wanted to get healthy for years. I have tried, like many of you here, to lose the same weight over and over again, and have tried fad diets and promised miracles only to give up. But a new healthy lifestyle is going to be my gift to myself... because I am finally realizing that I can't do it for anyone else- only for myself. Now if I can just learn to be nicer to myself along the way - that will be a bonus!

I have finally admitted to myself that there are no magic pills or potions to this thing called weight loss. I am using good, clean nutrition and tried and true cardio with free weights and balance ball to learn to live a healthier lifestyle. I know it won't be a quick fix -- it took over 40 years to get here, so I can't expect to get to my goal in a week!

For anyone who stopped in to meet me during my brief foray into the sparkpeople website, yes, I did drop off the face of the earth. But I am back now with a renewed spirit and sense of adventure. I will do this and I will succeed.

My goals are still the same, but I would like to also get to the point where I can honestly say that I am living my life according to what I feel is important, and not what society says I should think is important. I don't want to be judged by appearance and bank account and I don't want to spend my life chasing after things that "they" say I should want. I have always tried to be my own person but more and more I have felt myself measuring my life against the media's yardstick. I do not want to look like one of the wafer thin, drugged out, anorexic starlets . I do not want to rely on the fickle whims of the public at large to be happy.

I will find my inner strength (I am sure I left it here somewhere!) and I will run my own race. I wish that for all of you here... That we all learn how to run our own race and be true to ourselves! Relish the moment you are in because it is ALL important. And, lastly, remove your self-imposed limitations. Give yourself permission to just go and do it (whatever it is) - no matter how bad you will mess it up.

This year I will claim ownership of my body -- it has frustrated me for 40 years and I have bashed it both mentally and out loud. I am going to try treating it right for a change to see if we can become friends.

SparkPeople offers a world of potential and amazingly generous support and sharing of knowledge and experience.

Sadly my time with our local team has not been what it was as we used to pull together lots of cool events such as walks, bicycle rides, runs, kayaking and even contradance!.

The good news is that I've recently retired and I'm open to organizing such events again, I would have to see more interest on the part of others, perhaps new members such as yourself? ;-)

In the meantime I highly recommend posting blogs on your SparkPage and questions for SparkTeam message boards to get the most from our SparkFamily!
