You're lucky that the Kane Chronicles are only 3 deep and they end, but you get the impression you'll meet the Kanes in the Heroes of Olympus Set. I haven't looked at the Demigod book yet but maybe I should. I'll down load it to kindle though. I admit I've got them all in hardcover and I'm saving them for my daughter. I saved the Ergon books for her as well.

I haven't read any of these, but will definitely give them a try--thanks both for the recommendations!

That is my son's favorite author, he first got interesting in reading the books after having seen the movie in school last year. Since then he has been reading all of the books, and was rather insistent that he own the books. First he wanted the full Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, cause he liked them so much and figures he will read them again at some point, but now he has gone onto reading both The Heroes of Olympus and The Kane Chronicles and wants those books now as well. Although since we started him with the paperbacks that is what we are keeping him with so if he wants to read the new ones till they are out on paperback he borrows them from the library, as he wants all the books in the same format. It really stinks that they can't come out with the books in both forms hardcover and paperback at the same time, you always have to wait about 6 months to a year after the hardcover comes out for the paperback version. Although there is one book he had me get for him in the hardcover form although the paperedging is different on it and that was the DemiGod book. It is so great when a kid or teenager finds an author that they really enjoy reading and get excited about. My son wants me to read the books but I won't for a while since he tells me so much about them that I would like to forget about before I do read them, lol.

I've start Rick Riordian's Mark of Athena. I must say I like his writing.

If you like action adventure books these are really good. I've been reading since Percy Jackson and the lightening thief. the movie, not so great but the books are fantastic. Percy Jackson and the Olympians takes you through the Greek Pantheon. The Heroes of Olympus brings in the Roman Pantheon and the Kane Chronicles takes on many in the Egyptian Pantheon.

I've been doing some just for fun reading, with another go-round of Nora Roberts' Sign of Seven trilogy (Blood Brothers, The Hollow, Pagan Stone).

And I've picked up Louise Hay's You Can Heal Your Life again, returning to the basics of changing your thoughts and changing your life.

So far I have all her books on Stonewylde and love them.
A pagan community that lives apart from the world but is still part of it as they trade andgo to college.
Rituals and celebrations are all pagan and it is lovely to read about them and feel the connection to the celebrations.
The characters are well drawn and you care about them and want to know what happens yet you don't want the tale to end.

Great future reading ideas, gals! I'm having to re-edit a book for which I was *not* the final editor the first time around, so recreational reading is taking a backseat at the moment. emoticon

Amanda, I'm going to look for those "Bad Kitty" books - I noticed you had a couple when I visited. I love children's books, including some of the "tween" books I read as a kid, i.e., Walter Farley's "Black Stallion" series. I was horse-mad as a kid, so I loved stories about horses - but not the sad ones. I don't like tragedies, except for Shakespeare's. Even those are a bit sappy for me, but I love iambic pentameter. emoticon

I'll have to put them on my list! I keep a running list, of books that I want to read. So when I reach a mini goal I buy the book and then if I don't plan to read it again I donate it to the library.

I started reading Grandmother Moon from Z Budapest. I went to get Mark of Athena off the shelf, but this one seemed to say "Hey I'm down here it's my turn." So when anything decided to speak to me I try to listen. And when it comes to books, it's generally a book that contains information I've been looking searching out.

Finished The Search and liked it very much. Really enjoyed the dog training elements. I love how Roberts really does her research and includes so many rich details that inform the story and her characters, without becoming pedantic. And her dialog remains one of her greatest strengths, IMO. Really looking forward to the last in her newest trilogy about the haunted inn that comes out next month (I think); I'll be rereading books one & two in preparation!

I'm almost to the end of The Search and I'm loving every minute of it. I should be finished either tonight or tomorrow.

In Bad Kitty, the family has read, Bad Kitty Meets the Baby. and it's a true account as to how cats react to a baby. Jim and I recognized their behaviors in bad kitty. I agree Bad Kitty gets a Bath has been my favorite. My Smokey pretty much acts this way during bathing. And we've rad Bad kitty runs for president. She has my write in vote LOL.

Next Up in ficiton: The Mark of Athena.

I picked it up at the library (not remembering you were reading it), and am just 2 chapters in. The rescue of the little boy in the first chapter & the return to his parents had me tearing up a bit, and then the puppy antics with the love interest in the next chapter had me laughing.

I've read 3 of the Bad Kitty chapter books so far, and Bad Kitty Takes a Bath is by far the funniest IMHO. It had me laughing out loud.

Just started the newest Odelia Grey mystery, about the plus-sized paralegal, Hide and Snoop. They are so much fun! The author is Sue Ann Jaffarian; series is best read in order, beginning with Too Big to Miss.

My DH and I are stuck on the DIY show Holmes on Homes. He goes in and fixes what dishonest contractors stuck the families with. And I've been keeping up with a summer series, Perception on TNT. David is a college professor. He's a neuropathologist I believe. He helps the FBI solve cases, most of which include people mental disorders. David himself has paranoid schizophrenia and suffers hallucinations that help him solve the "puzzles".

OK to include updates on What are you watching? I don't pay for even basic cable channels, so miss some fun series. I saw the first season of Drop Dead Diva that my sister recorded, and bought that season on DVD on sale. Saw season 2 on Blockbuster online, but they don't have season 3, so I bought it from Amazon. I started it today (great comfort watching for a recuperative day off work), and I just adore this series. I love that the plus size actress who plays Jane, the brilliant attorney in whose body Deb, the shallow, skinny aspiring model ends up after she dies, is so glamorous. The show can be sweet and funny and poignant, and I recommend it highly!

It's almost a history book i think but I'm not sure. I'll let you know what I think of it when I'm finished. I just started this one last night.

Yes, I do have pretty broad taste. Another favorite picture book (my 3rd graders enjoyed it, so more appropriate later) is The True Story of The Three Little Pigs--told from the Wolf's viewpoint. Very humorous! And good for getting across the idea that people see things differently.

Amanda you are a jack of all trades!

Ellen Dugan would be non fiction. new age/spiritual or occult. The books are similar to working with a Silver RavenWolf book.

I'm not familiar with these. Are they non-fiction? I'm guessing so. I'm in another of my fiction phases. I finished Debbie's book (sweet) and just began James Rollins' new Sigma Force thriller--always cutting edge science, political intrigue, international locations, strong characters, history and a touch of the supernatural. When I was a bookstore manager (another career) I would recommend his books to fans of The DaVinci Code.

I'm reading Seasons of Witchery by Ellen Dugan. What I am enjoying the most about this book is a reminder of how important the seasons are to us. Our lives don't revolve around the seasons like they once did. We have air conditioning and heat at the touch of a button. The food we eat is easily bought at the grocery store. The moon and the sun had everything to do with how people used to go about their lives. Very interesting reading and enlightening.

I'm more than halfway through Debbie Macomber's new hardcover, The Inn at Rose Harbor which begins a new series for her, set in a B&B in Cedar Cove. From her Dear Reader message in the front of the book, it sounds like her fans hated that she was ending her Cedar Cove series featuring a new address in each title, and ongoing overlapping lives. So the new series will feature beloved characters in cameo appearances so that we can catch the occasional update on the lives of these beloved characters, A nice compromise--at least for us readers!

I've moved on to Wind Through the Key Hole by Stephen king. It goes with the dark tower series but it's not exactly about Roland and his Ka-tet. It's more a story from Roland's own childhood. A bed time story his mother use to tell him. If you've never read the dark tower series you can still enjoy the story of young Tim Ross.

Redink I learned a long time ago to ignore reviews. After all a review is an opinion. When it comes to reading the only opinion that really matters is your own. Usually if it's well written no matter the genre I like it. I'm not much on biographies and autobiographies though. I think that has more to do with I live enough "real life" when I read I want "and impossible escape." There have been exceptions to that rule but very few and most of the people have been a long time over the rainbow bridge.

I'm reading Darynda Jones's "Grave" series that starts with "First Grave on the Left." The main character, Charlotte ("Charley") Davidson, is the Grim Reaper. It has a lot of one-liners in it, which for some is distracting and others hate them, but I found them to be hysterically funny. I was a little leery of getting the second one, "Second Grave on the Right," due to the more negative reviews (about a quarter of the total reviews are one to three stars), but I went ahead and got it. I'm glad I did!

Most of the negative comments have to do with the continued use of one-liners and Charley's action at the end of the book. It's just Jones's writing style to use quips as a way for Charley to deal with her life. As an ADD'er myself, I find it's very helpful to deal with my life with a lot of humor. I happen to think throw-away lines are extremely funny (my dad was a great one for saying them), and for some folks, they get annoying. If the lines are clever, I love them.

As for Charley's "selfish" action at the end that had so many of the nay-sayers in a snit, I understand her motivation for doing it. Maybe it was a selfish thing to do, but humans do that sort of thing, even if we don't want to admit it. No one is noble all of the time, and she didn't know what else to do in a very stressful situation.

The third book, "Third Grave Dead Ahead," is next on my reading list; however, I have to finish my current editing job before I'll let myself start it. It will be a nice break before I start my next edit, a super-novel (over 150,000 words). I just hope that read is as good as the "Grave" books.

There's a fourth "Grave" book coming out this October, as well as Ms. Jones's first foray into YA fiction, "Death and the Girl Next Door," also due out in October. The second book in the YA series, "Death, Doom, and Detention," is due out next March.

Another "Grave" series I like is by Jeaniene Frost. I didn't care for the last side story, "Once Burned," as much as I like the main series and the other sides stories. I couldn't get all that enthused about the heroine, and her love interest, while entertaining in the main series, was portrayed as being much colder in this book than previously depicted.

I read a ton of books, all different genres, but at the moment what I'm reading is predominately paranormal in nature.

I enjoy juvenile and young adult fiction sometimes.

I haven't read it yet, though I just put a request in with the library system for the book Mao's Last Dancer, which was the basis of a marvelous movie by the same title which I just finished. I recommend the DVD highly, and look forward to reading the autobiography on which it was based.

I've finished A perfect Blood and have moved on to The Serpents Shadow. The final installment of Rick Riordian's "The Kane Chronicles." It's geared toward teens and tweens but i find I like the action without all the language. It's based on Egyptian Mythology. The trilogy has been a god read and something i can save for Bug for when she's ready to move on to bigger books.

Daughters of Joy is a different.
Deepak Chopra can tell a good story and has a way of making you think as well.
Lots of things in it so far that make you wonder and even something like a walk through meditation is in the story.
I am quarter way through the book and find it really good so far.
Not sure where it is taking me but the journey is interesting, nothing heavy but it does make you look at things differently in a gentle way.

I knew he had written a few novels, but haven't read any. Please let us know what you think. (I have found that not all authors are good storytellers.)

I just finished one of the recent No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency books. I adore this series. They are so gentle and heart-warming. I liked the HBO series that I rented on DVD. Just sorry they stopped after one season. Don't know if it was budgetary concerns of shooting in Africa, or the lack of nudity and profanity (HBO staples) that doomed it. The series is set in Botswana, and is so evocative of that place, filled with pride and love, that it is really delightful.

I'm currently 2 books into rereading the Bridal Quartet by Nora Roberts. My favorite story of those is the first, about the photographer who has the dysfunctional relationship with her ultra-selfish mother that has affected her ability to trust and to love. I just inhaled the newest Patricia Briggs--her first Alpha and Omega werewolf book to come out in hardcover. I like that series and the Mercy Thompson one about a shape-shifting coyote girl raised by werewolves--and I like that they intersect, being set in the same universe

Laurie it sounds interesting!

I decided it was time for a pleasure book so I'm reading A perfect Blood by Kim Harrison. It's the latest book of the Hollows series. The short version of the series is she's a well meaning witch, a private investigator in a way, that bucks the norm and keeps getting herself into trouble. She comes out "on top" in the end of each book.

I enjoy the humor and the mystery. She's complicated and I love it.

I have just reread two books I really enjoyed: "Stewards of the Flame" and the sequel
"Promise of the Flame", by Sylvia Engdahl. Both are science fiction. The first is set on a world
where the medical system is in control of everything: to the point where people are ordered to undergo mandatory health checks/medication/implantation of tracking chips.
Even when someone has died, the hospital stores them in stasis vaults where
their heart is kept beating.
And an underground group of people who are opposed to this, develop their psychic powers and learn how to overcome pain and heal themselves without medicine and with their own mental powers.
In the second book, they journey to a new planet and establish a new society where these powers are the basic of their culture.
I like the fact: that unlike many in this genre, there are no real villains: just different points of view. The characters are interesting and I cared about what happened to them. And the points of view are interesting to think about. I am not sure I would go to the extreme of rejecting all medical care as they do (my partner is a 7 year breast cancer survivor, who would not be alive without conventional treatment, and I have normal tension glaucoma: I might not have normal vision without treatment), but I do think that medicine has gone too far in our society and we ought to look into supplementing this, in addition, with herbs, natural treatments, control of stress, and other forms of healing.
So these books made me think about my own values and what I believe about this issue. Plus I always like reading science fiction or fantasy about paranormal powers.
I also want to share about another series, the Sime/Gen series by Jacqueline Lichtenberg, but will save that for a different post, as this one is too long already!

I've started reading Spell craft and folk lore of the dark goddess by Stephanie Woodward. It's about the Celtic Morrigan. I it's been a good read. It includes some historical stuff that's I'm not sure I would have found on my own and the citations are there for further reading if you so choose.

Since I've had some emotional issues to surface I've been hearing the call of this goddess and I didn't really know why. I've always thought of her as a battle goddess for troops (think Afghanistan) but in reading it I can understand why i might feel her call. She was a patron of abused women and sovereignty. And she was a fertility goddess as well.

In any case if you don't know much about The Morrigan and her 3 faces and want an easy place to start, this seems to be a good jumping off point.

I likewise enjoyed the Seven trilogy, and bought it in trade paperback large print, but alongside the Sisters series from Roberts would be the Circle trilogy, Morrigan's Cross, Dance of the Gods, and Valley of Silence featuring an 11th century sorcerer, his twin brother a vampire, a modern witch, a vampire slayer, and a princess and a shape shifter from another dimension, the land of Geall, a sort of fantasy Ireland with dragons. More epic battles, romances across time and dimensions, laugh out loud dialogue, magic, and occasional conversations with a goddess.

I read the Three Sister trilogy and loved it. I've also read the sign of seven by Nora Roberts. It's a really good "good v. evil" story too.

Rosie finds herself in Rose Madder, and she does face her abuser and she wins. I think it's important to note, Rose Madder is a color but in the book it's the name of a painting Rosie buys in a pawn shop. I love stories where pictures come alive :) Now there's enough of a spoiler alert.

One of my favorite ongoing series is The Hallows by Kim Harrison. Anyone read her? When she wrote romance novels she wrote under Dawn Cook.

Thanks for the warning. Sometimes I can handle literary violence, and other times it really bothers me--same as with movies. I adore Nora Roberts' Three Sisters Island trilogy about witches who must battle a 300 year old curse. The first book features a battered wife who comes into her power. We meet her when she's on the run, we witness her put down roots and grow. When she finally faces her abuser it's not horrifying because she is not powerless. That first book for any who have not read it is Dance Upon the Air, followed by Heaven and Earth, then finally Face the Fire. (And yes, Water is present, though it doesn't get it's own title!)

I've never read much Dean Koontz. I've thought about it but there's always something I want to read more and so I go for that one. I found the gunslinger was hard to get through but the rest of the stories moved at a much faster pace. i think it's because of time span between writing Book one and Book 2. It was YEARS! Wind through the Keyhole is a prequel I believe. But to be honest my favorite Stephen King novel is Rose Madder. If you've never read it I recommend it, but forewarning. The Main Character is a battered woman who escapes her husband who happens to be a police officer. At times it made me tear up because I could relate to Rosie.

Eva, that's interesting. One of the "just forfun" DVDs I got myself for reaching goal was The Stand, to replace the VHS cassettes I taped off commercial TV when it first aired. I loved the book (the original, unbloated, un-"updated" version from 1976, I think). It was the first King I had read, on the strong recommendation of a dear friend, who knew I would enjoy the good vs. evil theme, and she was right! But I tried to read the Gunslinger, the first Dark Tower book, and couldn't get very far--just didn't hold my interest. I stumbled onto another "horror" author, Dean Koontz. The first 2 books of his I read--and I did read several--have remained the best: The Watcher and Lightning. The former has one of my favorite characters in fiction--Einstein, a sweet and highly intelligent dog who escapes from a governement lab along with an engineered monster who is hunting him, who is tragically self-aware of his own hideousness and hates the dog for being loved.

I love Patricia Briggs! I'm reading my Deepak Chopra--3 books currently. I recently discovered a delightful novelist Sarah Addison Allen, and also read the brand new Pecan Springs/China Bayles mystery by Susan Wittig Albert. I also devoured the first 2 books in the latest Nora Roberts trilogy BoonsBoro Inn, with its friendly resident ghost, Lizzie. emoticon
