Finished Valley of the Horses, which I thought was good, especially the parts of Ayla alone, and with her animals, and also happy she's not alone anymore. On to...The Mammoth Hunters, though I may re-read parts of V of H.

Yes, still rereading the Patty Briggs books--and annotating characters, events and quotes from the stories and novels.

I watched a YouTube clip from the managing artistic director of the Lakewood Playhouse with news on how the latest governor's decree is affecting the current season and their summer classes for kids. I hadn't planned to watch anything else, but a 25 year reunion of the Pretty Woman cast on Today caught my eye.

It was delightful, as was the 20 years later reflection by Julia and Richard on Runaway Bride--another favorite rom com of mine.

I don't watch TV really, so had never heard of James Corden on the Late Late Show, but saw 2 hilarious routines where he reenacts snippets from films, first with Julia Roberts,

Next book in Earth's Children series by Jean M. Auel (Clan of the Cave Bear was first, I read it ages ago) the 2nd: Valley of the Horses. I was organizing some space in the basement, and had set these aside for 'someday'—my sister had left them behind—and I decided someday had arrived. Reading slowly, not even a chapter a night, at bedtime, but it's weaning me off having a screen or 3 on right as I fall asleep.

I just started reading [*Sacred and Herbal Healing Beers: The Secrets of Ancient Fermentation* by Stephen Harrod Buhner][1]. A great book on the intersection of herbalism and fermentation. Another book by the same author is on hold at the library for me, *[Plant Intelligence and the Imaginal Realm: Beyond the Doors of Perception into the Dreaming of Earth][2]*

[*The Goblin Emperor*][3] by Katherine Addison was good--lots of courtly intrigue as the young emperor changes the world and learns to trust his instincts. I am looking forward to the sequels.

Also enjoyable: [*The White Magic Five and Dime*][4] By Steve Hockensmith and Lisa Falco. I don't usually read mysteries, but this one drew me in with its great character studies, humor, unexpected plot twists and spot-on tarot readings.

[*Shades of Milk and Honey*][5] by Mary Robinette Kowal portrays a Austenesque heroine who saves her sister from a cad and finds unlikely love while learning how to weave magic in a Regency-era setting. I recommend it to anyone who likes Austen and the era she wrote in.

I am in the middle of [*The Hazel Wood*][6] by Melissa Albert. It is a YA book that is basically a mystery based on fairytale themes with a smidgeon of horror. It takes place in New York and the author throws in lots of literary references. Readers might appreciate its maiden/mother/crone aspect or the intergenerational trauma and rescue scenario.

I'm sort of saving my books, so this weekend, since finishing Roomies, I've spent my "reading time" at home watching the DVD Toy Story set I got myself for my birthday. I love that these Blu Ray discs have the original DVD features, plus new ones as well. I just finished TS3--I forgot how much it made me cry at the end. I sort of remembered the sad ones in the incinerator, but didn't recall the bittersweet ones when Andy leaves for college. Looking forward to the special features tomorrow night, then Tuesday I buy the brand new Patricia Briggs on release day!

Blessed Be, Amanda

I finished my bus/work book, The Case of the Wandering Scholar, with the lady detective in Victorian England. Mildly entertaining, not bad, just not especially compelling. I prefer stories where I care deeply about the characters, like the one I'm rereading now by Heather Webber, or my favorite urban fantasy series. Characters don't even have to be human for me to care about them and want to know what will happen next in their lives. I'm a whole week away from the new Mercy Thompson release. I can't wait!!

I discovered Heather Webber (who as Heather Blake has written 2 mystery series with magical elements) had a new book out in 2019, Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe. I got it from the library and finished it today. I simply loved it. Set in a little town in Alabama, it's her first women's fiction book. The characters are wonderful--I really want to read more about them, so I hope she'll write more books in this setting. All sorts of family secrets and struggles and emotional issues, with a tiny bit of magic tossed in. I may buy it in hardcover to read over. I'll probably reread it before returning it to the library. It was SO satisfying!

I'm just sorry that Midnight without a Moon fizzled out at the end. So many things kept happening, with lots of intensity & emotions, and tense historical events--and then it just sort of stopped with the main character changing her mind about what action to take--but without any action taking place. It was odd and disappointing after such powerful feelings had been stirred.

Last night I finished my subsequent bus/work book, The House by Christina Lauren--a really creepy gothic (but modern) YA novel. There was a bit of a lull in the middle, but then it got really scary by the end. A good read if you like spooky.

I'm about to finish Silence Fallen, 2 Mercy Thompson novels back in preparation for the release of her next one on 3/17. This one has her kidnapped from the Tri-Cities in Washington state and taken to Milan by a powerful vampire. In escaping his stronghold, she causes the werewolf chasing her to be run over by a bus. She's a coyote shapeshifter, a daughter of Coyote, so odd things are always happening around her. She's also a VW mechanic and married to an alpha werewolf. She ends up in Prague, where she meets up & interacts with the legendary Golem of Prague. It's a favorite installment of mine in the urban fantasy series that begins with Moon Called.

I gave up on my last book--boring!--so I was hoping my next book would be better . . . and it's amazing! A juvenile fiction book--that I consider more YA, with a 13-year-old protagonist: a black girl living in Mississippi in 1955. The conditions are heartbreaking, but she is so matter-of-fact about it. I'm just a little ways into it, but extremely compelling! Oh, the title is Midnight Without a Moon, by Linda Williams Jackson. It's a glorious debut novel!

Finished my bus and work book, Ice Dogs, by Terry Lynn Johnson. Really good, about a young teen girl musher in Alaska who finds an injured city boy while out with her dog team, and they get lost and have many hair-raising adventures trying to get home. Very intense and exciting!

I absolutely LOVED The Unteachables by Gordon Korman! It's not only about a group of misfit students, but also a burnt out teacher trying to skate out the year until early retirement who gets assigned to them. I almost missed my bus stop yesterday afternoon, because I was at a very tense section. Two mornings in a row, it had me laughing so loud, I may have disturbed coworkers. And I had to wipe away the tears when I finished it this morning just before my shift started. I *highly* recommend this one!

I've had a pleasant surprise with an anthology I requested. Actually I'm the one who suggested the purchase, since my system had no copies. Faith Hunter's newest short story was in something called The Death of All Things, edited by Gilman and Richardson. Writers from many genres, and mostly not well known, take different perspectives on Death as a character. I've only read a couple of duds & gave up on one, but I've laughed and teared up and thought "now that's strange!" And a few authors I enjoyed enough to search for other titles to read. [from yesterday, copied from another team]

I finished Death of All Things, and in the last few had a heartbreaking and rather depressing story, and very the last was heartbreaking, yet uplifting--reminded me a little of Touched by an Angel. The author of that story, Delayed Exchange Deferred, is Kiya Nicoll.
www.immanion-press.com/kiya-
nicoll

Wedding Vows, by Leah Cutter, about a ghost in contemporary China, was sweet and had me tearing up. And The Wolves of Lady Death, by Christie Golden, was so moving it made me cry.

I love storytelling that creates characters you care deeply about and enjoy watching them grow, struggle, evolve, and triumph. I've discussed Nora's latest trilogy and what I love about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which I just finished, in the chat thread. And now I've returned to the last 3 books by Faith Hunter. In Dark Queen, Jane Yellowrock has met her brother, another skinwalker who was born on the Trail of Tears after she was forced to change into a bobcat and left in the snow to escape the soldiers--as a child of 5.

Just barely began another library impulse display, which will be my bus and work book this week: The Curious Heart of Ailsa Rae by Stephanie Butland, about a young woman who gets a heart transplant. I only read a few pages while in line at the store today, and I think I'm going to really enjoy it. More to come . . .

Roseflower Creek is one of my favorites. It's sad. Have your tissues ready.

It's written from the prospective of Lori Jean, a child from rural Alabama the 1930's. It's heavy on dialect.

Trigger Warning: Lori Jean and her mother suffer physical abuse from the mother's husband. It also deals with coat hanger abortions, as it would have been understood by a 9-10 year old child of the era. I personally mourned heavily with Lori Jean over her aborted sibling.

This Physick Book of Deliverance Dane. Corrwin Goodwin is lead on adventure through her family's past when she finds a 17th century Bible in her late grandmother's house. The Bible contained a scrap of paper with the Name Deliverance Dane. Corrwin begins to research the name and finds she is descended from Deliverance, a woman accused of witchcraft during the Salem witch trials.

It meshes a modern witches prospective well with the discoveries of the past. It's important to note that this story is rooted in Howe's own family history. She is the decent of both Elizabeth Proctor and Elizabeth Howe, women accused of witchcraft in the Salem witch trials. I think that's part of the reason the story is so captivating.

Started a new book on the bus today: Get A Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert, who has written interracial romances prior to this chick lit book. It is absolutely delightful, I giggled through most of my bus ride home. emoticon Helen Hwang, who wrote The Kiss Quotient and The Bride Test has a testimonial quote on the front cover, which is unfortunately covered up by the library barcode. I highly recommend it.

Just wanted to share a quote I enjoyed from Circle of the Moon, the newest Soulwood novel by Faith Hunter, set in the Jane Yellowrock universe. It's a conversation between the main character Nell (a twenty-something magical being with plant and earth affinities, who escaped a polygamous cult at age 12) to her younger sister Mindy (12 or 13, same magical potential, still in the cult), of whom Nell is seeking custody.
"That's very Machiavellian of you, sister mine."
"That sounds like a dirty word, but if'n I get a greenhouse outta that, then I'm okay with it."

Nora Roberts' next book, The Rise of Magicks, comes out on November 26--Tuesday. I finished rereading the first book in the trilogy, Year One (very reminiscent of Stephen King's The Stand) this morning, and began the second book, Blood and Bone. Hoping to finish it Monday night, then I will pick up the brand new one Tuesday after work. This is not a romance series, but a moving tale of people, magical and "muggles," who struggle to rebuild after a plague, fighting both magical and non-magical forces of evil. Strong stuff, strong characters--excellent reading!

I will see if I can get Pratchett's The Hogfather. Thanks for the tip, Paula.

I was so impressed with Out of My Mind, Eva. Hope you like it!

I've been enjoying reading one book or series at home, then a different one at work and on the bus. A recent cute one from my library impulse display ('Choice Reads') was Love at First Like. Featured a twenty-something in New York who built her business largely through social media, so it was a culture I'm not familiar with, but it was light and fun. Oh, the author was Hannah Orenstein.

I finished the final Soulwood novel last night--there was so much I had forgotten! I read all the Jane Yellowrock short stories and novels, and I'm still #23 in line, though they just got their 2nd order in and processed. They had first order 6 or 8, but when they got over 30 requests, they added the other number for a total of 14, but the second group hadn't arrived. So it could be a while yet.

I checked on the release of the 3rd Nora Roberts novel in her Chronicles of the One series, her first anthology released in hardcover, and it's coming out 11/26. So I'll start book #1, Year One, tonight. They came out a full year apart, not usual for her series, so I definitely want to remember all that happened before reading the new--and I think final--one in the series.

Blessed Be, Amanda

I am reading Lake Ephemeral by Anya Allyn it is a mystery/scifi,/adventure.

Lake Ephemeral is unique it has 7 mansions surrounding the lake, and no one exepct the gardener and one other person is allowed enter it.

Seraphin is an orphan or thought she was when at age 11 she learns her Mother is alive and at Lake Ephemeral.
Accidentally Seraphin discovers something terrifying about what is inside the seventh manor.
Her life is changed by what she learns and soon finds herself in the middle of secret and no way of returning to the world outside the Lake as no one is allowed to leave.

The secret of the six other mansions and the other children who live there becomes clear and Seraphin embarks on a journey that will answer all her questions and create new ones.
Fast paced and a really good read, I can't wait to find out what happens next.

REVEIW
This is a mix of mystery, adventure and science fiction. A really well written story that gently leads you into the tale.
The mystery of the lake is revealed as are the significance of the mansions. A touching tale in many ways and the way it unfolds makes you want to know what happens next.
The children have been part of an experiment that has more than one aspect to it.
The end of the tale is really good and leaves with only little cliffhanger that could be a new book or just leaves it to the readers imagination.
If you like mystery and science fiction give it a go you will not be disappointed, nothing too taxing just a good tale that keeps you guessing.

It is YA so language is not an issue, I dislike some books that use strong language to a large extent. I am not a prude I just don't see why some authors insist of peppering their books with such language when it is not needed.

Onto The Hogfather by Terry Pratchett

I read this in plenty of time for Yule each year as I like to read a few seasonal based tales before December 21st.
I read this every year and find something new each time. I also watch the film every year, but the book naturally contains far more and is such a good read.

I've borrowed a book from Brenna, sent to her by an adopted Auntie. Sharron Draper's Out of My Mind. I find I'm really enjoying it. I've recommended it to a couple of friends and they intend to find it.

I started a new book today by Abbi Waxman, The Garden of Small Beginnings, and I love it. I was laughing out loud on the first page, and several times at work and on the bus, had a hard time stopping the giggles, where it got hard to read the words through the tears. Highly recommended!

I finished the brand new hardcover (her first; the other 3 were trade paperbacks) by Jasmine Guillory, Royal Holiday. It focuses on Maddie's mom, Vivian Forest, whom we met as a minor character in the last book. It was sweet and less steamy, following the holiday romance of two fifty-somethings.

I read Fumbled by Alexa Martin some weeks ago, and just finished her first book, Intercepted, this evening. It's another romance involving NFL players. The author was an NFL wife for 8 years. Her 3rd book, Blitzed, is on order. I like that she has cover quotes by two other recent discoveries, Jasmine Guillory and Helen Hoang.

Next up for bus and work is Jasmine's brand new Royal Holiday--her first in hardcover--featuring the mother of her last book's romantic lead. So looking forward to it.

At home, I'm on the last short story/novella in the Jane Yellowrock anthology Blood in Her Veins. Then comes novel #10. I'm having *so* much fun rereading these!

Speaking of being in line for a book . . . I just found out my library system ordered 6 more of the new Jane Yellowrock book, so instead of being 34 of 8, I'm 34 of 14 to be ordered! I enjoyed the Renee Watson juvenile book, Some Places More Than Others, about an Oregon girl who goes to New York City with her dad and meets relatives for the first time. It was good, though not as compelling as her recent YA novels to me. I liked her lists at the end, including top 10 places to visit in Oregon and NYC.

I gave up on Double Dutch by Sharon Draper--just wasn't holding my interest. But I am *loving* the YA novel my sister found, from a list at her library, about a Persian teen who gets into breakdancing and has to deal with a bunch of anti-Islamic prejudice at her new high school. It's called A Very Large Expanse of Sea, by Tahereh Mafi. She's written a bunch more books; I don't know if they are all for young adults, or all about Muslim youth. I'll check at least some of them out after I finish this one.

I absolutely adored this book, and just requested her earlier 2 novels. I'm lucky I found this on the Choice Reads display, since the regular copies are all spoken for! There were copies available for the other two--The Garden of Small Beginnings and Other People's Houses, but a waiting list for the new one, The Bookish Life of Nina Hill: 128 people in line for 47 copies!

I reread the awesome trio of books by Jasmine Guillery--The Wedding Date, The Proposal, and The Wedding Party--just love them!

Now I'm giggling my way through the absolutely charming The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman. An unusual, social awkward, very intelligent heroine. I'm enjoying it immensely!

I stayed up to finish a sweet juvenile fiction book, Three Pennies, by Melanie Crowder. It's about a girl in foster care who was abandoned by her mother, but is determined to find her. There are also brief chapters told from the POV of an owl. Unusual and touching.

I had been thinking I might reread the extensive Jane Yellowrock series, and just requested the first 2 books plus the short story collection. Then I checked the author's website (Faith Hunter), and found out the next Jane book is coming out on Oct. 29, 2019! The last one ended with lots of upheaval and big changes after a huge battle with the European vampires, so it will be good to be reminded of all the details and relationships leading up. It's fun to dive back in and be reacquainted with a fascinating and well-wrought universe.

Reading a really funny juvenile fiction book, Louisiana's Way Home, by Kate DiCamillo. A very fast read with a hoot of a heroine with a decided point of view & voice, and lots of dramatics and hyperbole. It had me laughing in the break room and on the bus.

Read a silly little kids book, Obi, Gerbil on the Loose by Michael Delaney. I've requested the other two Obi books from the library.

Read Lost and Found Sisters by Jill Shalvis--quite enjoyable. There's a quote on the front jacket by Susan Mallery, whose books I enjoy a lot: "She's my go-to read for humor and heart." Then a novella that follows 2 teens from that book 10 years later, The Good Luck Sister. Fun. Next up is Rainy Day Friends, by her, set in the same town of Wildstone. The most recent of those was The Lemon Sisters, which I found on the Quick Reads display at the library.

Another wonderful book by Renee Watson--her first, I think--What Momma Left Me. Often sad, but gently so. And how I enjoyed the teen heroine's poetry assignments for class.

I was up well past midnight finishing This Side of Home, and I started her juvenile fictionalized biography, Betty Before X, which she wrote with the daughter of Malcolm X and Betty Shabazz. Being written for young readers, it's going even faster, and I'll definitely finish it today. What a gifted writer Renee Watson is!

I finished The Wedding Party at our last hotel, so Mary could return her library book on time--yay! Now I'll return to Alesha at Last. I did want to mention two young children's picture books I enjoyed that were written by Renee Watson (the author of Piecing Me Together, with different illustrators in completely different styles)--A Place Where Hurricanes Happen, and Harlem's Little Blackbird: The Story of Florence Mills.

Mary's library system got a brand new book in faster than mine did. She already read it and brought it this weekend so I could read it. I'm over half way and it's delightful. The Wedding Party by Jasmine Guillory who wrote The Wedding Date and The Proposal, with some of the same characters. Really sexy and fun.

Started another Choice Reads (what I refer to as the impulse display) book I picked up: Ayesha at Last by Uzma Jalaluddin. I'm loving it! The back cover describes it as "A modern-day Muslim Pride and Prejudice." It moves well, good humor, a likeable heroine, and deals frankly with prejudice of various kinds, ethnic and sexual politics. Like her characters, the author is part of the Toronto Muslim community. I'm learning a lot--and having fun!

I enjoyed the trilogy, but was disappointed in the latest book focusing on Marcus.

Read The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang, who wrote The Bride Test, about another "neuro-atypical" (high-functioning autistic) protagonist struggling & learning about sex and relationships. Very enjoyable, but be warned the sex is quite graphic!

Very different impulse read was the award winning "illustrated memoir"--a mature graphic novel-style autobiography by Thi Bui about escaping Vietnam and learning her parents' histories, being a refugee and becoming a parent herself. Fascinating & disturbing. Oh, the title is The Best We Could Do.

Now reading an awesome YA novel, Piecing Me Together by Renee Watson, about a black girl from the Portland projects who gets into an exclusive private high school, and joins a mentor program. She's an artist who does collage, who appreciates opportunities she's being given, but gets tired of being seen as someone who needs to be fixed. Poignant and rather lyrical in style. Can't wait to try others by this author. This is a Newberry Honor Book.

I just finished reading A Discovery of Witches, and have started the second in the series. Loving the characters, the feisty witch who is the heroine especially.

Just finished another impulse read from the library display: The Bride Test by Helen Hoang. A wealthy Vietnamese American goes to Vietnam to find a prospective bride for her autistic son. Very powerful and appealing. I liked the characters so very much. Can't wait to try her first book, The Kiss Quotient, which according to the bio blurb in the back was inspired by her journey. "In 2016, she was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder in line with what was previously known as Asperger's syndrome."

Loving my rereading of Susan Mallery's When We Found Home about 3 half-siblings, all offspring of a now deceased irresponsible philanderer, and how they create a new family.

I finished Sharon Draper's Fire from the Rock, a fictional novel taking place in Little Rock in 1957 when Central High School was integrated by federal law, adamantly protested by the governor of Arkansas and white racists. The historical details were so rich, and the human stories so heartbreaking. An excellent book!

I ended up loving the book--I just finished it now. I was getting close to the end on the bus, laughing out loud, and I had to just sit down and read it to a very satisfying end. I hope she will write many more, and always be this entertaining!

Evidently her debut novel (oh, and it's Sandi Ward, with an i not y), The Astonishing Thing is also a family drama told from a cat's perspective. I finished Something Worth Saving, and enjoyed it very much.

I'm currently reading The Proposal, by the author of The Wedding Date. Not as good, IMHO, but enjoyable still, and I've laughed out loud in the lunchroom and on the bus while reading it.

I've been making some real finds on the impulse display at the library! Stella by Starlight, my introduction to Susan Draper, the first Rip and Red juvenile fiction book, recently The Wedding Date. One I picked up Saturday is Something Worth Saving, the second novel by Sandy Ward, told from a cat's point of view. I'm thoroughly enjoying it.

Finished Draper's Jericho trilogy, and read the first 2 in her Hazelwood High trilogy--intense & compelling. Now on the lighter side . . .

I loved The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory: funny, sexy, but with some depth as well. I read the preview to her second book, The Proposal, which has a semi-minor character from the first book, and I can't wait for it to come in. I'm #12 in line, and I think 5 were available now, so I have to wait (impatiently) for other patrons to return their copies or not pick up their holds by the deadline.

I'm reading one of Draper's YA trilogies. Finished Battle of Jericho which was upsetting, dealing with hazing; actions that shame or humiliate people are a trigger for me, so parts were hard to get through. I now in the second book, November Blues about a teenage girl we met in the first book who learns she is pregnant by her boyfriend who died. As you can tell, this author deals with real issues kids face today.

Reread several of the short stories in the Mercy Thompson anthology: Gray, Seeing Eye, Red Dress with Pearls, and Redemption. Just began Fire Touched, the next to last Mercy novel before the release of the new one a week from Tuesday. The werewolf pack just took on a troll loose on the Cable Bridge across the Columbia, with an assist from fae friends, and Mercy made her pronouncement with flaming fae walking stick, which sets up the conflict in the new book.

Blended was really good. Then I finished (finally) Time's Convert by Deborah Harkness who wrote the All Souls trilogy; it was set in the same world, with most of the same characters, but it was kind of boring and not very satisfying.

I started another Sharon Draper YA novel, Romiette and Julio, yes, a variation on Shakespeare. I just finished it, and it was thoroughly enjoyable; I laughed often.

Just started a new juvenile novel by Sharon Draper, Blended, about a biracial girl whose parents divorced and have new families, and she shuttles back and forth one week at a time. She describes herself as the caramel passing between her vanilla and chocolate families. Funny but poignant, too.

I finished a darker YA novel by Draper, Panic, which dealt with sexual violence, date abuse & bullying, as well as dance as art & therapy. I'm on to lighter fare today, with a brand new novel by Susan Mallery who writes wonderful, humorous women's fiction with strong relationships and challenges, both romantic and familial. I kept laughing out loud reading on the bus this evening.

I stayed up a little past 11 last night (had a late nap after all), & finished the final book in the trilogy about the witch and the vampire. Really exciting finish! Very enjoyable.

I began another book by Sharon Draper, Out of My Mind. Very different from her historical fiction about civil rights and slavery, but every bit as good. The heroine is am "almost 11-year old" girl w/ cerebral palsy. She can't speak, walk, care for herself. But she's smart & understands things, and has so much inside her that she can't express. I'm totally amazed and hooked.

I'm well into the sequel to A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night. This one has the witch and vampire couple time traveling back to 1590 where they interact with all sorts of historical figures in England and Prague. A little slow to start, but very intriguing.

Another "impulse display" book I picked up is proving much more satisfying. Stella by Starlight, a juvenile literature book by Sharon Draper about a family in the Jim Crow South during the Depression. She's a good writer, and I'll probably check out other books by her when I finish this one.

I finally finished rereading the last Soulwood novel, and just started a brand new one. It's enjoyable, if a bit denser than the Bishop series. I'm interested to see how matters develop between Nell, a widow who escaped a polygamous cult and is exploring her earth and tree magic, and Occam, a wereleopard whom Nell brought back from death with her magic, who was badly scarred by fire.

I just finished the latest book in The Others series (released this past Tuesday) Wild Country, and have already begun to reread it. Another emoticon installment in a fantastic series! I frequently laughed out loud while reading, and teared up a couple of times, too. I truly am in awe of Anne Bishop's writing.

I liked the Samuels book, The Goddesses of Kitchen Avenue; I just didn't engage as strongly with the characters. Finished another by her, Lady Luck's Map of Las Vegas, rather dark & characters not as likable for me. Started another today (another Inter-Library Loan), A Piece of Heaven, and I'm enjoying it a lot--more like her first one, No Place Like Home.

It ended up being very exciting and complex, and I'm eagerly awaiting the next in the series to get to me. The third in the trilogy is available now, but I'll need to read the next one in order.

I've got a couple more Rip and Red books I picked up; they'll read fast, I'm sure. At some point I'll reread my Others novels by Anne Bishop in preparation for the release of Wild Country that comes out on March 5 that focuses on the resettlement of Bennett out west. We met some of the characters and have heard of others; I'm *so* eager to dive into another adventure set in this amazing alternate universe.

A Discovery of Witches has perked up; took ~ 100 pages to get past a slow set up, plus reading about a bunch of supernatural bigotry & a protagonist in deep denial. Getting intriguing now.

Well that was disappointing! After reading 2 really good books by Kelly Barnhill, I began another one today, The Witch's Boy (I didn't have the name quite right before), which I didn't like at all! It was thoroughly depressing and I didn't connect with any of the characters, so I stopped reading it, and reviewed my mindfulness class handout for the rest of the bus ride home. Started a new library book, A Discovery of Witches which is a bit heavy and slow, but not off putting.

It turns out that was Kelly's debut children's book. It was good. I'm reading another juvenile fiction chapter book with illustrations that I'm loving: A Whole New Ballgame, by Phil Bildner. It's in a series named after the 2 protagonists, friends who have just started 5th grade, Rip and Red. The guy next to me on the bus home asked what I was reading, since I kept laughing out loud. While funny, it also has some depth. Red is high level autistic (I thought he was just OCD), and Rip is not happy he's been paired with a sourpuss girl in a wheelchair for an extended assignment. I found this on the impulse display, and just now requested the next 3 books in the series. It's a fast read, and fun!

I really enjoyed An Easy Death (it's what gunnies wish each other on parting), hope the next installment comes out in less than a year! I think this had a 2018 release, not sure which month.

Speaking of release dates, Ann Bishop and Patricia Briggs are finally not coming out on the same day! Wild Country, the upcoming novel about The Others (out in the Western town of Bennett which is being resettled after the humans were eliminated by the Elders in answer to the massacre of the Wolves), is still being released on the first Tuesday in March as usual, but the new Mercy Thompson book isn't coming out until early May. I can understand that after losing her husband suddenly, Patty probably took longer to return to the next manuscript.

I'm now reading a juvenile fiction book by the author of The Girl Who Drank the Moon, Kelly Barnhill. That was pure fantasy, while this is also magical, but about real places, a kid who's uprooted from San Francisco and sent to relatives in Iowa; it's The Mostly True Story of Jack.

The new Charlaine Harris series is Gunnie Rose, set in an alternate history where the US fell apart after FDR was assassinated & the Depression hit. Canada & Mexico each claimed territory and the Indian tribes took back land; what was left broke into smaller nations. Lizbeth Rose is a gunnie, a gunslinger who gets hired to provide protection. It's vastly entertaining & readable. I'll finish it tonight or tomorrow.

I'm getting near the end of The All You Can Dream Buffet, and absolutely loving it. The only downside to these stand alone novels by Barbara O'Neal is that I wish she'd write more about these engaging characters. I come to care about them, and want to know what else happens in their lives, and just hang out with them!

I'm near the end of the 5th Witch City Mystery, Grave Errors, where Lee's class is planning a Dia de los Muertos celebration. Fun! Even though I have book #6, I think I'll read the Inter-Library Loan I picked up today, one by Barbara Samuel (a pen name of O'Neal), No Place Like Home.

I dressed and took out garbage, but didn't get to the library. Luckily I had a fun library book to read: Daughters of the Bride by Susan Mallery. I LOVED it! Her special brand of interesting & likable characters with flaws, who struggle with family and relationship issues and who grow, with humor and pathos. Highly recommended.

I didn't get the name quite right on the Perry series--it's Witch City Mystery series, set in Salem. The protagonist has rediscovered a talent for scrying, or seeing visions in certain (black, shiny) reflective surfaces. She's pretty ambivalent about the ability, but is less bothered by the paranormal abilities of the cat she inherited from a murdered witch in the first book. Anyway, I finished the second and am halfway through the 3rd, from mostly reading between naps and washing dishes today. I've requested more from the library, and they are in transit. Hope I can pick them up tomorrow when I hope to have more energy than today that's been spent all inside in my jammies.

I adored The Girl Who Drank the Moon, and have requested two other books by that author, Kelly Barnhill.

Enjoyed Drawn Together:Uplifting Comics on the Curious Journey through Life and Love by Leah Pearlman. A very sweet and humorous self-help book.

Also liked The Beckoning Cat: Based on a Japanese Folktale by Koko Nishizuka, a picture book recounting the story of the cat figure that graces many Asian shops and restaurants as a good luck figure. That caught my eye at the library, and it was much fun.

I've gotten a good start on the first book in the Witch Mystery series, Caught Dead-Handed, which I'm thoroughly enjoying. More sympathetic and interesting characters than the last mystery series I tried.

I finished The Secret of Everything. Liked it; though not as much as the first. Now well into How to Bake a Perfect Life--another stand alone with fascinating & real characters with issues whom I've connected with quickly. I do skip over the recipes sprinkled throughout; you can tell she really knows and loves her cooking and baking!

The Christmas cozy mystery was fluffy and fun, then I reread a Debbie Macomber holiday book, Christmas Letters--cute. Picked up a bunch of books from the library, began another Barbara O'Neal novel--her first, I think--The Secret of Everything. All different characters from The Lost Recipe for Happiness, but very fully realized and engaging. She writes well, and makes you want to understand the people and find out what happens next in their lives. Recommended!

I discovered a new cozy mystery series, Witch City Mysteries by Carol J. Perry. I picked up a Christmas themed one, Bells, Spells and Murder, from the impulse table. It looks like there are 6 more in the series, starting with Caught Dead Handed. There are mild paranormal elements, and the setting is Salem, MA. I may try some of the earlier ones when I finish this one.

Actually after finishing the cooking book--and I really hope she returns to these characters, because I want to know what else happens in their lives!--I read a cook non-fiction book for kids: Shaking Things Up: 14 Young Women Who Changed the World. I knew only a few of them; it was fun and informative.

I should be finishing the Koontz book tonight, and my bus book by an unknown (to me) author is fabulous! The Lost Recipe for Happiness is about a sous chef, and what's humorous is that the ho-hum, predictable Alaskan Holiday by Debbie Macomber was also about a sous chef, so I'm a little familiar with the work. But the differences are glaring--the Barbara O'Neal book is original, with richly drawn characters that I feel for strongly and am very invested in, and the other was just boring to me. I just requested some of her other books. They may all be stand alones; I haven't read the blurb about them all.

This new Koontz novel is The Silent Corner. It's an intense and disturbing thriller, but he has these moments of depth and humanity and intriguing characters that enrich his writing.

I just requested Too Fat, Too Slutty from the library--a non-fiction book my sister recommended.

As I've mentioned in the Merry Meet chat thread, I reread Year One, the first in Nora Roberts' new series in time for the release of the second book this past week. Just finished it today--wonderful.

I started a new holiday novel by Debbie Macomber. This is one of her fluffier romances, and isn't holding my interest. I'll finish it on the bus next week. So now I've begun the first Jane Hawk book by Dean Koontz. I haven't read all his stuff. My favorites have been Watchers, Lightning, and The City. This features a (soon-to-be) rogue FBI agent, recently widowed who suspects some conspiracy behind numerous seemingly unconnected "suicides." Not deep into it, but interesting.

I picked up a non-fiction book (unusual for me) on the impulse display at the library: A Warrior of the People by Joe Starita. It's the biography of Susan La Flesche, who got her medical degree in 1889, becoming the first Native American doctor in the US, 31 years before women got the vote and 35 years before Indians could become citizens in this country!

I'm thoroughly enjoying The Phantom Tollbooth, often emoticon . I want to see if my honorary niece has read it. If not, it may be a Xmas present! I'll soon be re-reading Year One by Nora Roberts in preparation for the release of the sequel which comes out on 12/4.

An avid reader on the BBs asked about America for Beginners. Here's what I shared:

A Bengali widow who has never left her hometown in India plans a tour of America in order to reach Los Angeles to find out if her son is really dead. He had come out by phone, and was banished by her husband, who reported the phone call later received saying he died. But she doesn't know whether she can trust the word of her dead husband.

You meet the man who runs the tour company which caters to Indians traveling in the US, and one of his guides, a young Bangladeshi refugee, as well as the white woman, an aspiring actress, who is hired as a companion for the older woman traveling alone.

All sorts of class, political/social, and family dynamics and issues are explored through these very 3-dimensional characters. I found it engaging and lovely.

Thoroughly enjoyed The Aeronaut's Windlass (which one reviewer referred to as "steampunk," while another favorite author, Patricia Briggs, wrote a raving review--the first one on the back cover). The thrilling climax sets up a new war and dangers that loom--so I hope Butcher doesn't take too many years to get out the next installment!

I began America for Beginners at breakfast, and will probably finish it tonight. It's fantastic, and would make a fabulous movie with the right cast.

Well I re-read the Others novels of Anne Bishop, which I adore. And I'm hurtling to the climactic ending of the Jim Butcher fantasy, enjoying it thoroughly! Checked and he'll work on #2 in that series after finishing Peace Talks, Harry Dresden #16. Since #15, Skin Game, came out May 2014, we've been without a new Harry D book for a long time!

I didn't realize until I started the new (2018) Iron Druid novel that it's the last in the series. Events have been building up to an ultimate showdown involving many pantheons of gods in the Norse Armageddon called Ragnarok. And that takes place in Scourged. It's very intense and violent, but characters continue to grow and evolve, and Oberon the wolfhound keeps the laughs coming into the final few pages. Very satisfying. Not sure what I'll take on next--something new or something old and well-loved.

I just finished the last story in the short story anthology Brief Cases, featuring Harry Dresden, Chicago's only professional wizard. It was the only one not published previously, called Zoo Day about Harry taking his daughter (of whom he knew nothing for the first several years of her life, and only discovered when his mom, a half-turned vamp returns to get him to help rescue the girl in the midst of a huge war between the wizards and that Red Court of vampires) to the zoo along with his dog Mouse (a supernatural temple foo dog who was tiny when he fell asleep in Harry's coat pocket, and missed being returned to Tibet after a rescue operation with an entire litter, but is now the size of a small pony. They all run into various supernatural nasties, and each tells part of the story from their viewpoint. My favorite was Mouse's narration, including:

"You humans have the potential to be the most wonderful beings there are--if you can get past all these enormous stupid spots you seem to have in your hearts. It's not your fault. You just don't know how to work your hearts right yet. That's why there are dogs."

I finished the 3 Iron Druid books I checked out. Went by the library to see if the last 2 I requested had arrived yet (yesterday showed them in transit), but only an anthology came in with a story I already read, so I checked it out and returned in immediately.

So I'm reading a library book of Harry Dresden short stories--the second collection that came out this year. I've read some of them already in different anthologies, but the first story is one I missed, set in the Wild West with Wyatt Earp and a female wizard (whom we meet in the novels as Captain Luciano) on the hunt for a warlock. Fun!

Thanks for the tip. I'll see if my library carries them.

Had a pleasant surprise when I finished Book 6, Hunted, finding a novella that had only been in ebook format printed after the novel. The paperbacks have usually featured a chapter teaser for the next installment, but this had a novella instead.

About to start #7, when they began appearing in hardcover. This one is Shattered. I just reserved the next 2, Staked and Scourged, as well as an odd short story that seems to be in book form (he's had several ebook stories that I haven't found in a book yet). Then I'll be all caught up--sigh! emoticon

There are some books here that I've never read. I'll be looking for a few of them. I read this series and thought it was great - The Earthsong Series by Mary Mackey.

I was very pleased that after finishing Book #4 on the bus ride home, I drove to the library before it closed and found all 3 books I had just requested waiting! So I got to start the next one right away!

Finished Tricked on the bus this afternoon, and read an ebook novella, Two Ravens and a Crow, on my computer this evening. I'm really enjoying these Iron Druid Chronicles books, and my favorite passages are when Atticus (the 2100-year-old Druid) is talking to his Irish wolfhound telepathically. Oberon is a delight--they joke and compete, and Oberon can make me laugh so hard I cry. Great fun!

While I'm waiting for my sister to get back from a fishing weekend with hubby in Idaho, and pick up a copy of the next Iron Druid book--which her library had available--I reread the last Wishcraft cozy mystery by Heather Blake, and today I began the brand new one, which is also the first to come out in hardcover. It's called To Catch a Witch, and is the 8th in the series--a cute one which I enjoy very much.
