I have had RA all my life. I can't even remember when the insomnia started. But its clearly pain that wakes me up. Having every joint in my body affected doesn't give me too many sleep positions where I won't have something screaming at me. So by default, on the back is the easiest to tolerate. I do have a torso sized heating pad that is safe to sleep on (low heat) I also have an adjustable bed. The only issue with using heat is its been proven you sleep better with a cooler room and body temperature. I have never had depression. My Dr. did try me on Gabapentin but it made me dizzy. I am leaning towards holistic health and am trying to get off the toxic chemicals. I no longer take NSAIDS (all kinds of strikes against their use), transitioning off methotrexate which I have been on for over 30 years. For sure the longer I lay down the more the pain increases. Indeed I feel at my best when I am moving. I do get tired mid afternoon though when the lack of sleep catches me up. Average 3-4 broken hours of sleep. I do always try to go longer. One day I stayed in for 8 hours, but could barely move when I got up :-(

When one door closes, I simply look for another to kick down! Starting over isn't a crime, its Life!

great article

Everybody tells me that they would love to knit, but they don't have time. I look at people's lives and I can see opportunity and time for knitting all over the place. The time spent riding the bus each day? That's a pair of socks over a month. Waiting in line? Mittens. Watching TV? Buckets of wasted time that could be an exquisite lace shawl. ~Stephanie Pearl-McPhee, At Knit's End: Meditations for Women Who Knit Too Much A true friend reaches for your hand but touches your hea

Sleep problems = lower threshold for pain
Sleep loss = pain increase

I personally can vouch for that. How does pain affect your sleep / sleep issues affect pain for you/
