Yes, I do track my food here on Spark. It's been eye-opening!

I do, but I'm not consistent with it. Sometimes I have no idea what the caloric intake of what I'm eating is, and the food item is not on the list. Other times, I'm too ashamed to see just how many calories I took in on a particular day.

I should do better. :(

if the scale isn't doing what you want it to do, there about an 80% probability it's because of what you're eating!

don't shortchange your goals! be sure to track your meals! especially if you find you're not making the progress you want to make!

that's my biggest problem right now. going to fix it!

I've been keeping a food journal since February. I've started using SparkPeople this month. At first I was keeping the journal and transcribing my entries to SP, but now that I've pretty much populated SP's options with many of my regular items, I've pretty much stopped using the journal altogether. I wind up keeping a little notepad of things eaten during the day so that I don't forget, along with serving size, and if it's something new with a nutritional label, I'll make note of the values in case it's not in the SP database.

I find this more convenient than keeping the print journal. I'm actually surprised. I didn't expect that seeing as I'd become quite attached to the habit of keeping the diary.

You know, the majority of people who succeed at weight loss have used a food tracker. I forget the % but it's significant. If you're not using your tracker or tracking calories somewhere, you're doing yourself a disservice.

Or if you've plateaued and you're tracking is somewhat slacking, pick it up again!

Tracking is a good thing!

You're so right - knowing what your putting in your mouth/making the right choices is about 80% of the battle (seems I read that somewhere). The better one is about tracking food, the more successful you'll be.

That's one of the reasons why Weight Watchers works for so many people - you have to track your food as part of it.

And that's what I like @ SP - I can track and not have to pay for it weekly/monthly!

I started tracking my food and was I shocked! I didn't realize the amount of calories I was consuming until I started tracking. I find it so eye opening and it has been so helpful with my weight loss. I highly recommend tracking your food. I also like using Sparkpeople food tracker because it calculates everything. This is much more beneficial than just keeping a food log.

Oh My Gosh, great idea and something I'd never thought of doing. Many times when I eat out I forget what all might have been in the dishes I ate when I'm trying to figure out my portions for the tracker. From now on, I'll put it all into my phone before I start eating!

Thanks!

I'm tracking my food. I found out the hard way that when I don't, I'm more likely to eat something that's counterproductive to my goals and my health. And I lose track of what I've had.

So when I'm away from my computer (I use the SP tracker) I write what I eat in my calendar or put it in my phone and add it to the SP tracker when I have a chance.

Also, it's good to know what's working for you and what's not. Sometimes eating a particular food could set off a trend of bad choices...

Glad to see you posting BRC!!!

I don't think I could have lost my weight and maintained the loss for over a year if I did not track my food!!! Even in maintenance it is important to know how much I am eating to make sure I am getting enough food!!! Tracking is not about limitation but about awareness!!!

As I get fitter and more active I had to make sure I was getting enough food and in the right configuration!!! Even though I have gained back a few pounds from my lowest I have gained muscle definition and I am actually smaller than when I weighed less and am able to eat tons more food!!!

One of the other benefits of tracking is you can see how different foods affect you...for example your energy level, indigestion or digestive issues, menstrual problems can ALL be related to different foods!!! Tracking gives you a window to look back at your intake if and when you might have issues!!! I was able to minimize my menopause symptoms by adding soy to my diet and eliminating dairy!!! At that time I realized I was lactose intolerant!!! My life has been SO much better since I am limiting my dairy to small amounts of cheese and NO MILK!!! I wouldn't have been able to make the connection without my food log!!!

The list is endless for me!!! Try tracking for a while and see what your own experience is and let us know!!!

Jackie!!!

Hmmmm....and for me it has become the exact oposite, how much to I have to spend at the end of each day...I've eaten this many calories so I still need to "spend" this many...LOL!!!

I also don't do the checkbook thing...I pay for everything through the month with my credit card, and then pay it all off when the bill comes.

it's funny that you see it like that because I wake up each morning thinking about how much $$ I can spend & how many calories I have to "spend". If by the end of the day I still have some of both left over then I did very good. LOL

Have a good weekend!

Good Afternoon Ladies!!!

I use the SP nutrition tracker and just love it!!! I have tracked my intake everyday but 2 since I joined SP 15 months ago even through 6 months of maintenance!!!

I can't imagine not tracking my intake...it would be like writing a check and not writing the amount down in my ledger...at the end of the month things would be bouncing like crazy!!! Same thing applies to my calories...if I don't keep track, I would be bouncing (and jiggling) like crazy!!! LOL!!!

I have added fiber, sodium and calcium to my tracker as well as the standard macro nutrients to make sure I am meeting my needs on all levels!!! I still have a really hard time getting the right amount of calcium but at least I am aware of the deficit!!!

Hope everyone has a great day!!!

Jackie!!!

Both for me. If I'm going to be able to log, I use Spark, but if I'm traveling, I write it all down. I think using the tracker is one of the two things that have got me as far as I've come! The other being my gym membership!

Hey gang,

I was wondering about who does what. Do you use the food tracker offered by SP or do you do it the old fashioned way and log all your food intake on a personal journal? I am sure you are all aware of the latest studies indicating the benefits of keeping a food journal.
I use the food tracker here with SP. Which is really convenient in that is has thousands of foods so that you are going to find what you are eating on it, and if not(which does happen) you have the choice to add and share your favorites too. Just be sure to be as accurate as possible when putting the information on the tracker. But the one downside is that I am not learning how to write down what I am eating and if I am not near a computer I am in trouble. But I do try to stay on top of it because I like being able to see my progress and it really does help.
Okay your turn what about you? Food journal or SP Tracker?
