I worked on and almost finished the last row of the current row until hubby took me out to lunch by the beach. I vow to finish that part and then try and figure how to proceed with final borders. Carol

I think I need to sew something else today other than this last row. I need some variety. I will say that I purchased the 3 1/2" HST die from the LQS to use on my next quilt, "there's a die for that", and boy is that slick. Its so easy when they have the dog ears cut off of them but you do have to watch the size along with other blocks you cut yourself. Carol

I finished one of the last rows, one pinwheel set to go. I'm not making the final row, will add a blue border thin and the red border. THat's it. I laid the poor thing down on the floor and it puffs up in the middle. Maybe I need to put books on it. Another quilt , I think it was Good Fortune, did the same thing. And it got quilted. I wont take it to her though because she mentioned it and I'm embarrassed to take another one. Carol

Thanks Amy. I pressed it again today, trying to shrink the bigger areas and stretching the tighter areas. Bonnie stresses to place the line of the ruler onto the fabric before cutting. I do this but it makes the square blocks a tad bigger than the HST triangle cut on the accuquilt. I placed the triangle on the ruler and it is 2 1/2" but a hair smaller than the squares. All of this makes a difference. This next row of pinwheels, I measured the quilt and then adjusted the pinwheels to fit. Had to add an extra square. Its a game of cat and mouse and when you have that many squares and hst there is a lot of give and take. The entire quilt is made up this way. And I vow that there is way more than 11 yards in this top. The whites alone were 4 or 5 yards. And I keep adding reds tot he mix. This quilt will find a home here. Not sure if I'll make it any bigger but it would fit our full bed for Patriotic days. When its all day, I will fold it up to rest for a while and then decide if I can send it out to be quilted or not. On PLatypus it would be a nightmare. Carol

Carol, it is very pretty. I'm not so sure I would take anything apart either. Sometimes, the act of taking things apart causes more stretch!

Carol, beautiful! I love the changes you made to Bonnie's pattern, with the flying geese border on the sides instead of those pin wheels! I like your colors and your use of the constant fabrics. Your tone on tone white makes the blocks stand out more and gives the eye a place to rest. Well done!

Working on Unity and it is really wonky. I cut the borders the size Bonnie says but should have measured the quilt instead. They are either too long and its lumpy or too small. And I can't remember to use a scant quarter or a real 1/4 inch. When I use a scant with so many blocks, then it can be too big. But in this case, I used a 1/4 and it is too small. I will have to send this out to be quilted so whoever does it can manipulate it. Or rip out where the borders are and make them fit. Don't really want to do any more ripping than I have to.
Once I add the top and bottom row 7 borders it will be approximately 72" square. 72 by 74 or something like that. Don't know how or why. I may just add that final border or two and call it quits. Not adding that final row. Carol

I'm still working on row 7 with the red pinwheels and hst. I have one side on. HOpe to knock this out in the next day or two and see how to proceed. Bonnie was making this for a twin bed in Quiltvilla. I dont want that size so I need to think if I want to add that border or not. I did buy 3 yds of the red with stars I found at the shop to add for borders. I did not want to seam the borders and will use some for binding and also part of the backing. There are some awesome finishes on facebook and interesting additions to the border. Carol

I like those stars at the top and bottom. I know Bonnie made a twin sized quilt, but somehow it looks off-balance or not finished without side borders.

Carol, I'm looking forward to seeing your finished quilt.

Here is the reveal and last row of which I am going to deviate from. Rather than add this row, I need to assess where I want to be on this. I want to add a border to make it wider and also to soften all the busyness of all those tiny pieces. And also, to not make any more of the. I love the quilt so far. I am going back to the LQS today to get fabric and I might buy more of that red with stars I got the other day and use it for a border. I also think I might drag out all of the dark blue and white HST for Frolic and sew them on. I never did make Frolics raspberry and white ones so that is good. Before I use up those HST though, I want to make sure I dont need them for Frolic. Kind of sad for this to be over. Carol

Bonnie's post on Sunday gave us a sneak peak of the reveal. The quilt is approximately 72 by 94. Currently is is 65 1/2" wide with the part 7 pinwheel borders. So adding a 4" border of a solid would do that. i wish she had continued on to make it square. The length is fine for my bed but I would need another 20" to make it wide enough.
I am still making HST but have all the pinwheels and the sides done. Just need to do the top and botttom of the block and sew them on. And sew them on to the quilt. At least I dont feel so much behind and could easily knock this out. The worst part is having to stop and cut more HST but I have really used up the fabric. She suggested 11 yds for the top but surely there is more used than that. I found a yard and a half strip of tone on tone white stars a few rows ago and I will use all of it up. Not to mention the previous neutrals. I think I have probably used 4 to 5 yrds of white in this quilt. I think this is the case. So I thiink she is off on her suggested numbers. We shall see what she says at the end. If she does add a solid border to it, I am going to get more of the red with tone on tone stars I got recently at the shop. Only half yd but it is going going going. I also have a pile of already sewn blue/white HST from frolic. Could also use those although I dont want the light blue, only the dark. And I still have not found the civil war blues. Oh, well. Carol

So I thought, I need some mindless sewing. So instead of following Bonnie's guidelines, I decided to sit down and minelessly sew 34 pinwheel blocks together with my already sewn HST. All the pinwheels have 4 of the same reds in them. The rest of the reds surrounding the pinwheels will be whatever comes out of the box. Then I cut strilps to sew together of white gold and blue. And yes I got a new gold and I love it. Such a pretty fabric with a nice hand and on sale. When I go back on monday, I am going to check out where this fabric was made. After I sew the strips together, I will cut them into 2 1/2" strips of the 3 colors. Might try on the accuquilt but it might be difficult to cut them straight that way. You put them sideways on the 2 1/2" strip die. I have used up my blue with stars fabric on this segment but I have another blue with stars similar that I can alternate with. If she picks blue with stars for the last row I am in trouble.
Somewhere in her instructions she gave the finished size of this quilt but couldn't find it this morning. i like it so much, I might have to add some borders to make it for a queen, or maybe my full bed and my son can have it. Carol

I was thinking pinwheels in the center but if I go with Bonnie's directions, this isn't how she put them together. So will follow her lead. Just need to cut neutral strips and blue strips and gold strilps. And finish up the red HST. In between sewing binding on Ella and working on HOPE. Carol

I did go and got a red with tone on tone stars to add to the red mix. And some gold! Much needed gold. Next week I am going back and really shopping to help them out after being closed for so long. However, she said she had sold a lot of starter machines online which was unusual. She can't sell them locally but online, she could. Carol

That's still a lot of cutting and sewing for this week!

This mystery is different in that you can see where it is going. I had belonged to a guild that did a lot of mystery quilts that were fairly challenging, but fun. And they weren't scrappy! You were told the yardage of each up front. However, you didn't know the pattern until the final layout. These became some of my favorite quilts/tops.

Okay, I havent finished my HST yet but I can live with that. Time to cut some gold and blue squares and make some pinwheels. I can use the HST as leaders and enders. And MY LQS is open for appointments today so I will go over there and search for more golds and a blue for a binding. She has lots of patriotic fabrics so I will see what I can find. CArol

This morning I cut a bunch of red and white triangles on the accuquilt. Thought wonders what I had and it was only 80. one third of the way through. Take a lot of fabric. And these are not getting trimmed. They are whatever they are. I'm betting it is a single row all the way around. Or pinwheels. Carol

I'm thinking they will be part of another block that she will use to add length to the quilt ( a row on top and bottom). The finished quilt is more rectangular rather than square so she needs to get going on adding length. Just a guess....time will tell the real answer. It is getting to be a really great quilt.

My favorite HST method for cutting lately has been using the accuquilt die for a 2 1/2" square. It is so slick for multiple needs. If I get all cut out, it will be a snap to sew them up. Comfort and Blessing has taken a back seat to all the other things going on. Carol

I think she wants to teach, so she's giving the various options, as she doesn't know the capabilities of her audience. But the multiple instructions are confusing. Use your favorite HST method!

Carol--I am not making the quilt, but I did read the instructions. Basically, I think she just wants 272 red and white HST units. They do not have to be pairs. From what I can tell, the pair means that you have a red paired with a white fabric. I think all the extra thoughts on how to approach the step made it confusing.

The good news for todays clue is that we dont have to sew a row onto the quilt. We only have to make 272 red HST. I had to read it over several times because I couldn't figure if it was red or blue that we are making. Finally figured out it was red. This is good news because maybe I will have enough blue to finish up. She says pairs so 136 matching pairs of red triangles. I will be calling in all the variety of triangle ways to make them as I can. For variety. I might even use cake mix sheets using 10" squares. Those are easy except tearing the paper off. And I can use up every bit of red scrap laying around. . Years ago I had started a quilt that used all HST's and squares. It was in patriotic fabrics, some of the same ones I am still using. So I might just take apart what I have made and use the already made ones. CArol

I heard some guilds are now doing virtual guild meetings. We are not set up for that sort of thing but I bet it would really be fun.

I think the strips will look better, especially since you are using consistent fabrics.

I don’t care for Bonnie’s scrappy neutrals in her quilt.

Good that you are continuing on Carol. I prefer rectangular quilts over square ones.

Here is part 5. Not to complicated. She has you using squares for the borders but guess what? I can use strips! And just rows of flying geese. Yay, I can catch up on Comfort and Blessing. Carol

Well here it is so far. It measkures 54 1/2" square with no sashing added to this row. 4th row count 544 pieces, 3rd row count, 612 pieces. Have not added up the other two rows yet. Depending on what the next row is, depends on whether I make it bigger or not. I might just add a 3 " border and call it quits. Carol

I was reading the fabric requirements and the yardage is 11 yards! And the quilt will by 72 by 94. I will likely run out of everything before I get there. I will need those golds and boy am I using up everything else. The only thing I might have enough of is neutral because I had a bolt of white with stars on it, a mini bolt. I might even end up buying some fabric. Who knew. I already bought gold. Carol

I',m on a roll with Unity and should finish today. HOpefully. Using the Accuquilt die to cut HST is fast as well as Kits by Carla. Just 5 more of the last row to do and sew together. Carol

My fabrics are mostly consistent. I use up one red fabric with stars and then I find another and use it up. Sometimes it is a quarter or half a yard but they are slowly disappearing. So this row will likely have 3 different reds in it and my neutral is a consistent white with stars after I used up the cream with stars. Carol
