Hi; We have a meet and greet Friday. Besides the fun stuff listed in this newsletter don't forget there are volunteer opportunities.

**************************** Major Announcements:
None this week.

******************************
Local Outings: (for the next couple of weeks)

Austin Sierra club events can be found at: http://texas.sierraclub.org/austin/outings

FRIDAY, JANUARY 30TH - MEET AND GREET
Please join us for food, drink and live music at Central Market (40th and North Lamar). This is a very informal get-together open to both members and non-members. Learn about the Sierra Club, how to get involved in our environmental efforts, and share dinner with fun, environmentally aware diners. Feel free to stop by anytime between 6:30 and 8:30pm and hang out with us. We may be inside or outside depending on table availability. Look for the table with the green balloons. Don't forget to check out the upstairs balcony if you have trouble finding us! This is a great opportunity to meet fellow Sierrans and find out about activities currently happening in the club. Suggestions for activities you would like to see the Sierra Club pursue are encouraged. For more information contact Philip (email: adonfelipe@gmail.com ).

So what do you think? Shall we plan a walk sometime, preferably when it's warmer? Next time I'm available over weekend will be Valentine's weekend, which means nothing to me! I'd be going on the 9 mile hike again with Sierra Club on the 31st, except that's the same time as Georgetown Rec's grand opening.
FINALLY, last week was the first week I felt well, didn't cough & now I'm all clear of yucky phlegm. MAN, that lasted a long time!
Hope everyone else is well & staying warm.

HI Ladies Happy New Year!

I found you over here. I remember we talked about walking over the holidays but Sue got sick, and LaDon and I didnt' go, a cold front came in and it rained that morning. I've started looking for work this week, or at least writing my resume and doing research on jobs. I'm headed out now for my first walk in a while. Anyway I'd love to join you if you want to plan another outing. Sue, are you up for it yet?

I am getting the e-mails for training, but I'm not actually signed up. I will sign up by the end of the month.

I haven't been doing much exercise at all lately. I am ready to get started as well.

So are you signed up yet? Are you getting the e-mails for training, beginning Monday?
Haven't had access to my laptop; had to rely on desk top backup, so haven't been on much.
Anybody done any walking lately? I'm still not 100%, but definitely ready to walk.

Were you just “kinda” thinking about doing this, or is the Zooma race a definite for you in 2009. I really don’t want to do any more events alone, so if this is a “go” for you, I’ll definitely sign up.
Thanks, LaDon.

Obviously didn't make it to the walk. Still not up to it. Called doc on Sunday because I didn't think I was as healthy as I might have been, so she put me on a second antibiotic, a steroid (Prednisone) & I saw her yesterday, where she gave me another breathing treatment & a note, not releasing me for work until Monday. I'm sure by then with the new meds plus additional week of rest, I'll be ready to go back. Yesterday went with kids to Zilcher Park/hiking trail for pix of them, which they framed for me. It was SO nice getting out in the fresh air & doing a little walking, even if I wasn't at my best. I loved it.
Hope to be "among the living" before too long.
Hope your holidays were good & you have a nice New Year's.

Ick...sorry you've been so sick. Good that you had days off to take though! I have not been exercising much lately either. I think we are meeting in the morning to walk, so maybe that will give me a little jumpstart! Not sure if you're meeting us in the morning or not??? I'd call if it wasn't so late already.

Hope you're all better now, and we'll see you soon!

Finally got to doc yesterday (well, Tues). Had Mon. appt. but car wouldn't start & nobody available to take me. So I've got pneumonia, ear & sinus infections. Boy, when it rains it pours!!!
Good news is, I've had two days of drugs & am feeling MUCH better! Bad news is, I hadn't done ANY cooking/cleaning until tonight & even so, it will definitely be limited.
And the BEST news of all.......because of my accrued holiday pay, I got half of Mon night (where I called in sick) & all of tonight covered by holiday pay, PLUS (drum roll, please) I also have Sat. & Sun. off as well.....so that's ALL five days my kids are here. Been off since Fri @7am & don't go back to work until NEXT Wed. @7p.
Also, not so great news, no exercise for over a week. Wed & Th when I got off work, all I did was sleep. I know, tho' that once my kids get here I'll be taking walks, which will be good for me.

You have a WONDERFUL Christmas, LaDonn, & willl be back soon.

LaDonn~With temp almost 80 today, I'm checking the weather, since it's the second night for my HORRENDOUS cold! So far wind chills are in 40's with howling winds. Looks like by the time we're ready to walk, wind chills will be in the 20's, with about 20mph winds. Normally I'd just bundle up; but with a bad cold & having to work Monday, I'm going to beg offl
We REALLY need to exchange phone numbers (did we do that by chance?) for just this purpose.

Looks like I can't make it to the 1/8 thing, since I won't get back from Chicago til 9:30pm.
And it'll be the three of us again for our walk, so that's great. According to the weather site, looks like lows will be 29 with high of 48, so.....we'll DEFINITELY have to bundle up!!!!!!!

Hi Sue I'll put the 21st on my calendar...and a maybe for 1/8.

I may be interested in a stainless steel bottle. I have a Sigg, but I've seen some better designs than the one I have. When are you ordering them?

LaDonn~Sent this to our Austin 50’s group & wanted to share with you as well.

OK, there are three things…first, info from Zooma. Check it out. I might be in Chicago & can’t make the 1/8 thing, but if I’m back I definitely plan to go.

Secondly, why don’t we plan on 9:30 on the 21st to do our walk, & let’s start from the Booty Crossing site. If you’re in Georgetown, take Williams Drive to the intersection that says Booty to the left/Lakeway to the right. Take a left, then follow further directions. If you’re south of Georgetown, come up IH 35, get off at Lakeway, turn left off exit ramp to light & take a left onto Lakeway. You’ll get to Williams Drive, where you’ll want to keep going straight (road becomes Booty). (Landmarks: pool on right; Shell/ Wag a Bag on left; Walgreen’s through the light on right).
From Lakeway/Booty & Williams Drive, continue going on Booty 1.5 miles til you get to a 15mph sign. Follow the curve & you’ll see a sign that tells you to turn left. Park in that lot & we’ll meet up there. My cell phone is 508-5039 if you have any questions/ get lost or whatever.
Hope to see as many of us as possible.

Lastly, I don’t know if anybody’s interested in getting SP stainless steel water bottles, so we can stop buying (& subsequently throwing in landfills) bottled water. Pur & Brita make some great, easy water filters—Britas’ a filter in a pitcher.
Anyway, if anyone’s interested, we can order a bunch of them & hopefully save on postage. I’m ordering two, so…….let me know if anybody else wants to go in on these.

It was nice meeting the two of you also. The miles go much quicker with people to talk to. I should be able to do the 21st. Just let me know the particulars, and I'll be there!

LaDonn~Whatever you & Jan might decide to do when I'm not available is up to you two, but.......we were thinking we might do another Sunday walk on the 21st. As I told her, I've got a gazillion things to do before son/DIL & daughter/ boyfriend come in on Christmas day, but I'm making time for me & my health, so.....whattaya say, care to do it again? We can meet up at Booty's Crossing & do that leg if you'd care to try a different route. Let me know & I'll set it up with Jan.

So far I lost 1.2# this week. YAY!

Ladonn~It was so nice meeting you today & I had SUCH a good time. Always more fun, I think, to have some company than to be alone (unless you're the type who likes to be in a 'zone' all by oneself). Anyway, the time flew by & I hope we can make this a regular thing (of course I'm only available every 2 weeks).

There are two bridges over the river inside the park. One you can drive over. The other you can only walk over. I can give you directions if you're unfamiliar with it.

Almost my name...it's LaDon.

Glad you had fun at your 5K! I can't wait to do one too.

I'd love to meet at the park. I work M-F. My work schedule says my day ends at 4:30. The amount of work left on my desk at that time usually says 5:30-7:00. I try to schedule at least one or two days a week to leave earlier, so I can go to the park before it gets dark instead of going to the gym. This week I have late work days on Monday and Wednesday for sure. Friday would probably be the best for me this week. I'll be playing catch up early in the week.

Ladonny (is that your name, btw?)~We should meet up sometime in GT & walk in the park/on the trails. What's your schedule look like? I'm off after working the weekend (work nights, 7p-7a): Mon, Tu, work Wed/Th, off Fri,Sat, Sun. Following wk I work all the days I had off & have off the Wed/Th I worked.
Had a SUPER time at the 5K in Sugarland & look forward to some other events. Ran (slowly, of course) a mile today before getting ready for work.

Thanks for being so positive! It must be time for me to go through with it. Have fun at yours tomorrow!

I live in Georgetown and love the Lake Georgetown Trail. I walk at San Gabriel park a lot, but I've never done the between part.

I have gained about 30 pounds since accepting a job that took me out of the classroom and into 50-65 hour work-weeks a little over a year ago. I was making good progress before that taking and teaching Taekwondo and hiking quite a bit.

I have also been fighting a smoking habit for the past several years. I don't smoke most of the time unless I forget to avoid happy hour! : )

Congrats on all your successes. Sounds like you're having a blast!

Ladonny~Of COURSE we can be ready by April!
I've done a 5K & am doing one in Sugarland Th. while visiting sis in Stafford (outside Houston).
Walked 10 miles Sat. with Sierra Club from San Gabriel Park in Georgetown, all the way to Lake Georgetown, a stop for lunch & then back. Whoa! That was a challenge!

I'm part of a 50's group in Austin & another of former BLer's over 50's (this second group met up in F'burg last year, coming from CA, AZ, TN & GA. What fun!) Live in Jarrell & work as Corrections Officer with Williamson Co. jail in Georgetown. Couple years ago was 205# & now around 150.
How about you???
