April 6 - 12 was better. I only goofed with salt on one day! I'm noticing that since cutting way back on salt, I no longer need to use dieretic medication!!

@CROQUETCOURT - They didn't really say. My observations from the numbers of participants are that the American Heart Assn. seemed to have the most participants who participated in the education sessions. In talking with some of the other folks with other diets, the plant based seemed to be the most challenging and hardest to maintain over time. I didn't really hear much about the specifics of the Mediterranean diet. I thought the American Heart Association incorporated many guidelines that were very reasonable to incorporate such as increase fruits/veggies (5-7), whole grains, minimize sodium, no more than 400 calories of sugared beverages.

It is shocking to me how much salt is in food such as a 4oz chicken breast or boneless pork cutlet! I usually eat below the Spark recommendation in cals., but just eating meat, vegetables, and fruit can add up the salt levels from food that is supposed to be healthy!

Keep on Sparking! It really works!

I will join. This will be really hard for me. I use the salt shaker at nearly every meal because I want more salt on my food then everyone else. I know it is something I need to work on though. Ugh...

My daughter and I participated in a health study two years ago by the Cleveland Clinic where parents and children were assigned one of three diets for a year and they tracked our progress. The three options were plant based (no meat/no dairy), Mediterranean, and the American Heart Association. We were then give monthly education sessions to attend. We were assigned the American Heart Association and a HUGE focus was on reducing daily sodium intake.

Some suggestions and thoughts that I can remember off the top of my head include:
- Remove the salt shaker from the table
- Read labels
- Avoid lunch meats
- Avoid excessive bread and cheese
- Rinse canned beans before using them
- Use no sodium seasonings such as Mrs. Dash

We didn't use a ton of extra salt, but we have become very aware of some hidden sources for us such as spaghetti sauce. I can REALLY tell a difference if I get too much sodium since we've reduce. I am super swollen and get a headache. Can't imagine how I felt all the time before reducing.

I'm a salt acholic so a good one for me! I'm careful tho I just love salt but the older I get the more water weight I get
