Hi Kathy,

Given the hot and humid weather conditions, and thunder showers, you did great getting half your of your mileage goal.

I also got a little more than half my goal due to the afternoon and evening thunder showers.

Thanks, Bruce

Hi, Val and group,

I think August is my hardest month for keeping motivated. I just get fed up with the heat, thunder storms, and humidity. It's still in the 90s in the evenings and many evenings I just say forget it. Have had a hard time staying motivated. So, I only made a little better than half my goal for the month, reaching 162 total miles. I haven't been able to convince myself to go further than 32 miles on any one ride. September usually starts getting better, so I'll keep trudging onward.

Well here we are, almost through with the month of August & Iíve only achieved a fraction of the mileage I had HOPED to accomplish...
We have gotten in several Thurs-night rides w/our Lancaster buddies; Hubby invested in a clean-up/tune-up of his bike which has him motivated.
But I am obligated to work as control vet at my horse ride this weekend; I have not found any practical way to bring my trike along when Iím hauling the big horse trailer. (Iíll be taking 2 of mine for friends to ride so at least my ponies will get some mileage)
And starting next month, everything changes as Iím losing one of my part-time associates while the other switches off to alternate Saturdays - in other words, Iíll be back to full-time hours myself! Hopefully we will find new help soon.

Hubby & I met our Lancaster cycling group for a 10-mi ride on Aug 1st, which was the first time I've had my trike out all summer...
I was surprised to be able to keep up!
Then I went to local park last Sat for a quick breeze out & back on a beautiful trail for another 7.4 mi. I bought a baby-sling type carrier for my little Chihuahua - I feel a lot better carrying him like that rather than putting him in a basket on the rear. He seems to like it too!
(See my latest blog for photos - if you want me to add you as friend just ask. I'm private to keep my ex & his wife from stalking me on social media, they've done it in the past)

It's really hot and humid here in north central Fl, but I really dislike riding a trainer inside. Early morning is the best bet because of afternoon thunderstorms. I rode this morning, planning on riding 30 miles, but had to call it quits at 20. Started too late and it got too hot. When I got home, I discovered the "feels like" temp was 105. We can expect another 6 weeks of this. I'm going to try again tomorrow, leaving earlier. For the most part, I'm going to plan rides of 20 miles or less unless I can ride at sun up, with a goal of 300 miles for the month.

So far, I have:

8-2 11.46
8-3 27.2
8-4 18
8-9 20.69
TOTAL: 77.38

I began my challenge this month to ride 6 out of 7 days a week, 10-12 miles each ride. So far, so good!

As for nutrition, I'm challenging myself to eat 3 balanced meals a day within my caloric goals and to track. In addition, I'm not going to have after dinner snacks.

In the Northern Hemisphere summer is in full swing. Early morning or late evening rides help beat some of the heat. In the deep southern United States, humidity and high temperatures may mean that mileage with be best made on an indoor training bicycle.

What is everyone's goals for August? Be sure to post your progress so we can all cheer you on.

I think I will shoot for at least 350 miles. I have 2 charity rides the next two Saturdays. The first is for Boulder Cancer Hospital and is 38 miles. The second ride is for Cystic Fibrosis and is a brutal 68 mile ride up Left Hand Canyon.

Mileage Summary:

August 2nd: 22.24 miles
August 3rd: 24.92 miles
August 10th: 48.34 miles
August 15th: 24.67 miles
August 17th: 71.83 miles
August 24rh 34.47 miles

Total: 192 miles
