Hi, Bruce,

I think I just accumulated enough miles that things wore out. This will be my first change out of the cassette and was the first time the crank bearings were replaced. I have become a disciple of the clean chain/drive train, so that is attended to at least once a week and more if I've had to ride through water/mud or other gunk.

I was having problems with rear wheel flats. I'd complete a ride without problem and the next day it would be flat as a pancake with a hole along the rim. It took a few times before the pattern was evident. Changed the rim liner and tried different brand tubes without success. Finally got tired of it and changed out the wheel. And haven't had another flat. Probably could have filed down around the spoke holes or added another liner, but I was absolutely over it.

Bike is riding good now. I expect even better when the new cassette is installed. Now I just have to deal with the heat. It's already been into triple digits.

Speedy - that looks like a nice challenging daily ride!

Hi Kathy,

Looks like you got some good mileage in May in-spite of mechanical problems.

I just changed the bottom bracket on my single-speed bike. The cheap original bottom bracket was getting "creaky". I replaced questionable Neco bottom bracket with a good FSA bottom bracket. I have all the bike tools I need to perform any and all bike repairs.

I also hate cheap parts. If I have to replace a part, I upgrade to a better part.

Your bike appears to be a 2014 Raleigh Capri 3.0, which is a pretty good bike.

All bikes need regular servicing and high-stress parts, such as chains and brakes. Cleaning and lubing the chain is critical. A stretched chain can ruin other drivetrain parts, such as the cassette, chainrings and jockey wheels.

I hope you get your bike ready for the rest of the summer.

Thanks, Bruce

May Mileage:

May 12 - 23.10 miles
May 24 - 31.09 miles
May 27 - 74.84 miles

Total: 129.03 miles

Note:
Average Elevation: 5,433 ft above Sea Level.
Average elevation gain: 4,373 ft.
Average speed 18.1mph.
Maximum speed, 32.91 mph.

Lots of snow in May. Colorado weather did not cooperate.I didn't ride much but I rode hard when I did get a chance to ride. Sometimes I wish could ride in a place that had more oxygen and was not so hilly.

I know this is hard to see. This is my typical ride profile. 75 miles with a maximum elevation of 9,000 feet.

I'm going to stick to 300 miles for May. I've gotten in 40 miles so far.

I think our spring is over with. It's heating up pretty quickly. The almanac says we are to have a milder summer than last year's. Hopefully not as wet. We'll see.

OK, I'm 74 mi in after participating once again in my annual Big Fat Charity Cycling Event, the MS 150.
Fairly proud of myself, considering no more time than I had to devote to training with all our freakin' RAINFALL! I completed 42 miles on Saturday & 32 miles on Sunday... The weak link actually turned out to be my crippled L foot (see blog for details).
