On Saturday, August 18th, I did the same ride I did on Saturday, August 13th. This time I was riding to raise money for The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The CF ride was a tiny bit shorter than last Saturday's Ride For the [Cancer] Cure. The ride for The Cure started in Boulder. The CF ride started in Longmont. However the BIG difference was the high temperature. Last Saturday ride high temperature was 102 F. The CF ride high temperature was 74 F. Big difference!

However, the relentless steep climb followed by a white-knuckle descent is not what I had planned for two Saturday's in a row.

I need to be a little more careful when I sign-up for charity rides.

I lucked out--one of the local bike shops gives classes on repairing flats as well as general maintenance. Both classes are reasonably priced and well worth the time and price.

I've had a couple flats but haven't learned how to change a flat yet. I need to put that on my list of things to do pronto!

Dear Handprint,

It is very cool that so many people offered help. I have had two flats in one day. My replacement tube was defective and leaked air around in the rubber around the stem.

When my second flat happened, a nice cyclist lent me a good tube.I was able to make it home.

I am glad you had a buddy that could ride to the van and go back and pick you up.

Saturday while i was riding in the BStrong event, I picked up a small piece of metal in my rear tire. I had a very slow leak and managed to finish the 70+ miles without losing much tire pressure. However, the next day the tube was flat.

I patched the small puncture in my tube. The patch worked and the tube is still holding air perfectly..

Thanks, Bruce

I can't even imagine being able to ride on mountains like that or heat.

Riding this week was interrupted by storms and mechanical breakdown. Saturday I had my first in-ride flat when I hit a sharp rock at 10 miles into the ride. I surprised myself and successfully changed the flat but I must have pinched the tube because it was flat, too. I also noted that there was dry-rot on the side wall of the tire and I could see the steel belt. My riding buddy went back and got the van and we went to bike shop for a new tire. If I had been by myself, I would have patched the tube and probably finished the planned ride. We went back out today and did the ride we planned yesterday. On a side note, I was impressed by the number of cars that stopped to offer help. We also had a pair of cyclists stop to help.

My miles this week:

8-8-18 21.17 mi
8-11-18 9.61 mi
8-12-18 30.78 mi

Total to date for Aug: 165.95

This forum is for everyone to post their cycling accomplishment so we can cheer each other on.

Sometimes other things get in the way of bike riding. Keeping the house in good shape, taking care of family and work obligations can keep my off my bike.

I also ride with my wife sometimes, which is fun. We don't fast and we don't ride far. When I ride by myself, I tend to go faster and cover more miles.

Here is my mileage for August, so far.

August 4th: 22.5 miles
August 6th: 11.22 miles
August 8th: 30.91 miles
August 9th 6.45 miles
August 11th: 74.53 miles

(August 11th was the 74.53 mile BStrong "Mountain Loop" ride with 4,465 ft elevation gain. Starting Elevation: 5,380 ft - Highest Elevation 9,845 ft , Maximum climb grade 12%. Minimum Temp: 60.8F, Highest Temp 102.2F. Slowest climbing speed: 4.1 mph. Fastest descending speed 41.7 mph. Average speed 16.1 mph. Note: The ride had a relentless steep climb for 36 miles!)

Total: 190.18 miles

In most parts of the Northern Hemisphere August is a few degrees cooler than July, which means August is still pretty hot!

Early morning or evening rides can help beat the heat. Hydration is key to replace fluid losses due to heat.

What is everybody's goals? Please remember to post your mileage so we can cheer you on!
