I just read through this thread. Lots of great ideas and confirmed that my choice of whey protein was decent. I use Isopure unflavored because it has zero carbs (I'm diabetic). I do weightlifting at 2 gyms and couldn't seem to get protein after working out. I'm going to add Isopure to my coffee and see how that tastes.

I need to work on something that will taste like ice cream. I've seen some great suggestions here as well.

Love the little mantra -- carbs before cardio; protein after ST.

Lots of good info. Thank you for sharing guys.
New to the team as well. What do you do for protein when you walk?
And what can be something that won't break the bank?
I am on a tight budget and looking for a job.
Hope you are all doing well. Have a good day! Holly emoticon

Spark forums are okay for some information, but if you really are serious about gaining lean muscle mass in order to burn fat, my suggestion is to look at more reputable sources (i.e. Bodybuilding.com, NPCnewsonline.com, muscleandfitnesshers.com, muscleandperformancemag.com etc.) especially when it comes to nutrition. Bodybuilders (and yes this includes the Bikini division which started around 2010) exemplify what it is to transform one's body through ritualistic simplicity in their daily life. That said, food is fuel, protein can come from food, but to get the proper amount of it (honestly 1g per lb of body weight is recommended by a lot of people) you will need supplementation in the form of Whey Protein Isolate, Branched-Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs), and/or Casein to name a few sources.

And take your protein immediately AFTER your workout! Proteins are used as the building blocks for all of your cells, so take it after to replenish the muscles you exhausted during your workout.

Furthermore, if diving headfirst into pre-workout nutrition when you don't have a strong enough foundation or simple supplement plan in place already might not be the best idea in my opinion. Pre-workout supplementation will help you push your limits more, but if you can't even complete the most basic exercises effectively to begin with, a pre-workout isn't doing anything for you (the stress here is for the less experienced/beginners).

And lastly, your supplementation may change based on if you are in a building or cutting phase. You're only going to get frustrated trying to lose fat and gain muscle at the same time -- especially for those individuals who rely heavily on what the scale says as an indicator of progress.

Just a few of my thoughts on this topic after researching, experimenting, experiencing, and even learning some things the hard way ;)

If you scroll down on your nutrition tracker, you'll click on "change your goals" and select "edit" next to the protein goal entry. But keep in mind that the people who need to get a gram of protein per pound of body weight are body builders who are already quite lean and are consuming many more carbs and calories as well overall, to fuel very intense lifting sessions and cardio. If your goal for now is to lose weight, it'll be hard to fit lots more protein within your calorie goals since unused protein is stored as fat and could damage your kidneys.

PS I think the gram-per-pound figure is actually a ploy by protein supplement companies to encourage people to consume more of their product than is needed, but I can't prove it, haha.

You can put in coffee. You can also find recipies for home made bars, a lot of them are a mix of oats, nut butter and protien powder. They taste pretty good, need to really watch portion size, pretty heavy fat content

I've noticed I'm in need of a protien boost, no fiber my fiber is good. So I bought pure protein chocolate whey protein I have found a recipe for chocolate peanut butter protein bars, and have read alot of post about putting protien powder in coffee but as I was looking at the label it says add to water add to milk. It does not imply that I can do anything with it, can I do anything with it? Or am I limited to water, and milk.

LMCBud, you can definitely be vegan and build muscle! There's another thread in this group about vegan bodybuilding, but the principle is the same: get enough calories, carbs, and protein in, and you should be set. You'd likely have to supplement a protein powder like spirulina, rice, pea, or soy, and it'll be easier if you get familiar with seitan, tempeh, tofu, quorn, and texturized vegetable protein. So, it really depends on how committed you are to being vegan.

I'm really interested in all these different types of protein powders, since I've just been relying on whey to supplement my protein intake. I'm a vegetarian, and it makes everything a lot easier--plus it tastes awesome in coffee! I use Optimum Nutrition's Gold Standard 100% Natural whey, but I'm really curious about the spirulina and casein proteins because I haven't heard of them before.

The reason I use ON is because of the Consumer Reports tests on heavy metal in protein powders. If you haven't, you should check it out: http://www.consumerreports
.org/cro/magazine-archive/2010/july/food
/protein-drinks/whats-in-your-protein-
drink/index.htm

I'd love to hear more recommendations on non-powder protein sources for vegetarians and vegans. I make my own seitan from whole wheat flour, which has 24 grams of protein per 130 calories or so (depending on how you make it). It's a great meat substitute for fajitas and spicy food, and if you make it with the water used to rehydrate shiitake mushrooms, it tastes a lot like steak.

I really don't use the powder form of protein it does not taste great for me I have tried many different brands. I do however like the taste of the pure protein chocolate shake already premixed and the pure protein bars the ones I tend to grab are the one that have the 20g of protein in them. I have yet to find the pure protein powder which I thought I might try since I like their premade shakes and bars. I will look at gnc and see if they have it rite aid and walmart here do not though they may carry it online.

I've been on a temporary vegan diet for three weeks and want to maintain some of this diet moving forward. Can someone tell me if this will be a hindrance to muscle building? I'm most concerned about getting the right nutrition to build rather than being vegan, so please share your thoughts.

Remember when you have protein-lean- have a complex carb with it. Carbohydrates assist the protien transportation into the muscle. EX. I like a can of tuna in water with chopped apples. Or low fat yogart with low fat cottage cheese.

For the past few days, I have really been focusing on increasing my protein intake! I read somewhere that you should eat 1-1.5 gram of protein per your body weight for successful weight loss! Now, this is a true challenge!

Answer to gluten free protein supplement from IsoPurePlus.com

Q. Does Isopure Plus contain lactose, gluten, or fat?
A. All Isopure Plus products are free of lactose, gluten, and fat. Lactose may cause stomach upset, nausea, diarrhea, cramps, and bloating in some people.

I have just started using IsoPure powder so don't have any experience yet, but it states it is gluten free for those looking for that.

Just got my first order of TRUTEIN protein powder. I picked "chocolate-peanut butter cup" and "vanilla". Tried one last night and one this a.m. Both were thick and tasty!

Mixed with SKIM milk, and added a small amount of plain, FROZEN fruit, 1 tsp flaxseed oil, and a small squirt of BRAGG'S liquid amino acids. Mix with hand blender/stick blender. (Or whatever.)

Trutein combines whey, casein, and egg white proteins. They digest differently over the course of about 7 hours. Whey digests fastest, then casein, then egg white. ...Or was it egg white and then casein.....

My focus remains continued weight loss (strength/resistance/bodyweight and cardio training) and continued muscle growth (strength/resistance/bodyweight)!

1 scoop of Golds Whey Protein (Extreme Chocolate Flavor) you can find it at GNC, plus a half a banana, ff milk, add ice and blend. I've also used a scoop of the protein powder in pancakes and waffles in the morning. Adding it to coffee sounds yummy! I'll give it a try!

I had SOOO many questions about "active" diets when I started on SP (and still do have a few!), but one of the first things someone told me was "carbs before cardio, protein after ST". It's really simplistic, and I'm finding that there really is a lot more involved than that, but it was a good place to "jump" from! The carbs before cardio REALLY seem to give me that extra "umph" I need to get a good cardio workout in!

Hello, I am new to the team. I have a whey protein and a soy protein powder that I alternate to make a morning shake. I will be out of my whey protein soon and was hoping to get suggestions on a natural protein powder that has a good taste. I have to be careful of the ingredients because it has to be gluten free. A lot of the natural protein powders don't seem to have samples to try before buying them. I thought maybe I could get some suggestions from this team.

Thanks, Rachel

My protein smoothie - before bed:

1/4 cup cottage cheese
1/4 cup ff yogurt (plain or vanilla)
1 scoop protein powder
1/2 medium FROZEN banana
(sometimes I add 1/4 cup frozen blackberries or raspberries)

Glad I found this thread. I just read a bunch of info on protein: different kinds, how they absorb, what other nutrients they have...it's a lot of information to remember. Right now I'm trying to train for a 3.25 mile race www.warriordash.com , train as a black belt in Kung Fu, and complete a 6 month weight lifting program for the first time. I am not getting enough protein and I need to fix it. I'm tired and hungry! Today I bought 100% egg protein to take in the morning and night to support my growing muscle. I also have whey protein powder I use after strength workouts.
I'm wondering if anyone else takes varying types of proteins at different times (I'm not going to depend mostly on powders either, but I need a supplement right now). I had a hard time deciding between casein protein and the egg protein because I like the idea of slow release casein protein for night time. Anyone take protein supplements in the morning and before bed?

I didnt Love the protein powder in my coffee but i think thats because I am really a coffee lover and it changed the taste too much for me to enjoy it.
Im thinking I will stick to using the protein powder in smoothies. Its a great treat for me that way.

Theres lots of calories in that powder......... better to get high protein for me from fat free cottage cheese.

hey thats a good idea... protein powder in your coffee rather than creamer.

I am curious about doing raw foods or vegan body building. I have several friends that a raw foodists and are very healthy individuals, however are probably not as active as I am. There are some good vegan and raw protein powders. Any other advice???

Mariadale - Just wanted to say I liked you quote.
The only real failure is quitting.

Also 30-70lbs upper body and 100-200lbs lower is pretty good! I think thats about what I use too, not sure that you want to go higher in weight, maybe just more reps???

At this point, I'm doing weight training via the machines at the gym. Would you suggest protein at this stage, when I'm still doing 30-70 lbs (upper body), and 100-200 lbs (lower body), or once I up the weights more?

There are no secret muscle building pills. Your body needs protein, plain and simple, to repair and rebuild muscle tissue. Many of us find whey powders a convenient way to get a protein boost. However, if you don't like them you can eat your protein in the form of quality protein foods.... eggs, fish, chicken, cottage cheese... etc.

I know it was the milk, but now if I even smell the powders I'm about ready to puke! And it doesn't matter what flavor it is either they all make me gag now *shivers just thinkin about it*

Hi! Just wanted to thank everybody for the information. I have been using weights for many years, but I have never been too concerned about my protein and diet. The comments on this thread suggest that this is extremely important for good health. My Body Comp recently tested at 36.4%! Yikes. emoticon

What do you mean by bulk up routine. I am interested in what you are doing and achieving.

I have hurt my shoulder so I cannot do much right now but hoping it return to normal soon.

Thank you in advance for explaining your routine.

I don't need whey, I eat more protein and ordinary skim milk on maintenance. My secret is doing the long haul to get fit, toning up then give it the whole arm adding more weight..
It is frightening to think I have only been doing my bulk up routine 3 weeks and my arms have improved 100% My bat wings are getting better and people are commenting this fact..
I thought now on maintenance nearly 3 years. Nothing new will happen, wow was I wrong.. I am have motivation to see what else I can achieve..

I too am struggling with getting enough protein in my daily diet. Im not a vegetarian but dont really eat much red meat. I am trying for 100g min per day and most days not getting there.
I started using EAS protein powder ------ ( iadmit I know little about nutrition and need to learn alot). I make a shake with 2 scoops of powder, a splash of skim milk = and whatever fruit I have - mostly frozen fresh fruit .....l and I drink that shake as a morning snack right after workout. i am also a cheerio snack freak - meaning when i feel the need to snakc I munc on dry cheerios. ( probably too many). In any case = I am gaining weight and wonder if the protein shake is causing that.
How does EAS compare from a calorie standpoint to all the other ones I see mentioned here.

All advice accepted. emoticon emoticon

I'm vegan, which makes it a challenge! There is controversy surrounding soy, but I need it if I'm ever to get enough protein.

I use spirulina (a kind of algea) protein, pea, rice, and soy. I hope that as I progress that these will be enough.

I honestly did not know that you could get a hemp protein powder. I'll have to look that up!

I do know that Whey protein power, IMO, tastes better than most but I believe it doesn't stick with me very long from a fighting hunger point of view. Cassein protein, while not as smooth, will stay with you longer.

My son is 17 and drinks protein shakes to supplement his protein. I have no worries about it. I just make sure that he doesn't get the kind of protein that is loaded with sugar. Some of the better tasting ones are real calorie bombs!

Got some natural hemp protein powder.. made it like I do with whey protein into a bar... um well it is eatable but strange taste. Daughter won't eat it that way now. Not sure what to do with it now!
