There was an article put out by National Review on Florida's response to Covid 19. Our numbers have been low and I think Governor DeSantis has done an excellent job of managing the whole thing with a team. When hubby goes to the nursing home to retrieve a deceased, he has to answer all the questions and have his temperature taken. Every time for every home he goes to. This is in the whole state of FLorida. Carol

I was commenting today that we hadn't heard much about Covid in Mexico or even in the South American countries. Since they are warm countries, do you think that has something to do with it? Seems like the Northern States are more affected. Carol

My local shops have always been "open" with limited number of occupants or by appointment only. They also offered online shopping and order pick up.

Yes it is Amy. So I sat down at my machine, went by the pic I had taken of the quilt, and sewed the blocks together in 2 hours. Hope is about the fastest quilt I have ever made, started on May 3. So then I pieced batting strips together and found the backing I had purchased for it and getting ready to sandwich and start quilting it. Quilting two quilts in one week would be amazing. Going to use my new line tamer ruler and in the ditch and then just echoing around the diagonal lines on the quilt. Should be quicker than Ella. Carol

Our computer guy came over last week for a repair and I knew that his wife is a rabid New England Patriots fan. So I offered HOPE to him for $100 and he agreed to purchase it for his wife. I had used the last of my NE Patriot fabric that I had and I still need to sew the blocks together and get it quilted. Sadly, his wife passed away suddenly yesterday at age 62. Not sure when the funeral will be but now I am on a mission to finish this up and gift it to him. Might have to rent a longarm to do it quickly. Carol

I agree AMy, use it up or let it go. Yesterday I cleaned off my design board. I was using it for a storage facility so I took all the blocks, squares, etc off it so I can use it again. Its not big enough for HOPE so I"ll use my bed for that one. Carol

Carol--isn't it a good feeling to use things that you have and then have the added bonus of more space.

I am going to focus on cleaning for some time. The more you let things go, the more difficult it gets.

I am trying to do a bit of cleaning and reorganizing in that area. It is a slow go and there are things not related to sewing there too. My clear project table gives me space to go through things. I'm not sure how long I will hold out before starting to piece something! I should get those things quilted--but I hear the piecing voice calling softly.

Actually Nancy, we had discussed it and this is a commercial product designed for hospital use so would be easier to whip them up. And she is the Pastor's Wife and they bought the fabric and she knew she wouldn't be able to do it and we were thinking of offering them for a $2 donation to the church. Long explanation but that is why. This whole virus thing is a perception of whatever you deem it to be in your own head. I mentioned to her that in a month or two, the masks wouldnt be necessary anymore. She said, Oh, I think it will take a year!" Personally, I think this whole lockdown thing was a bit much, especially in some areas and states. In other states, like NY and Jersey, it was devastating. Florida is a very large state with much rural areas in the middle and north. Our area is very different from Miami and Tampa and Orlando.
I'm ready to get back to life and church. Carol

Turned out nice Amy! While I was virtual fabric shopping last night and watching on my phone, I got a call from my Pastor's wife and friend from church. I had to not accept the call due to watching the sale but found later that she was at the front door dropping off some fabric for masks that is more professional type than just a cotton. It can be sterilized in the over. Not that I want to make any. I need to call her today. Carol

I've been making those fabric bowl cozies for use in the microwave oven, etc. A while back (I won't say how long because it's embarrassing) a woman from my church asked me to make her 6 of them. Now I'm finally getting around to it. I've completed 4 and only have the stitching of the two halves together plus topstitching for the remaining 2 bowls. She had said she would pay me, but it's been so long ago since she made the request, I wouldn't feel right taking the money. Plus I wouldn't know what to charge. So if she insists, then I'll ask her to make a donation to our church to either our food bank or our kids food backpack program.

Both are great Amy. That Postcards one would be great for all those solid layer cakes and fat quarters I had purchased! And I love the modern blocks! And those fabrics!
CarlAnnie, I understand the soreness of sitting and using the same muscles over and over. Making 4 1/2" star blocks, 36 of them with 17 pieces each gave me some sore fingers and muscles in my right arm. And I noticed I kept turning my head left so needed to move the blocks to in front of me. More today. Need to take a break I guess. Carol

Oh Amy! Love them both! I think the black sashing and border on the Tula Pink blocks will be great. I love the colors of the Postcards from Sweden quilt. I may have to find that pattern.

Barb (Carlannie), I'm sorry you are hurting so. Making the face masks can require intense concentration and sewing for longer periods of time than I think we normally sew. I use the first two fingers on my right hand to guide the fabric when I sew, so I sometimes get a trigger finger/cramp in them. Also, my left shoulder and wrist hurt. I think I will make one more mask for my brother, unless somebody asks for a mask.

Here is a picture of the Postcard from Sweden top. You can find a free pattern for this top on the internet. My kit came with the pattern and a chart to convert it free spirit solid colors that were used in the top. I think you can do it with fewer fabrics and get close results. I think quarter yards and 3/8 yards would have made this project much easier and more accurate to do. I will quilt it eventually with a wavy lines as suggested in the pattern.

This is the book that I am using for my modern sampler blocks. I started with a small layer cake that was 24 ten inch squares and 2 solids (gray and green). This is what is currently left for me to work with (I do have lots more gray and green should I need it). I don't plan on doing the blocks with triangles as those would use up too much fabric too quickly.

And here are the blocks I have finished. I plan to sash them in black and add a wider border of black after I finish making more blocks (just going to keep making different ones until the layer cake scraps run out!). The book does offer some setting options.

Hi, all! I took this week off from sewing masks. I tell you, this whole mask sewing has just made me extremely anxious. And with arthritis in my hands, and two herniated disks in my neck, my right hand just decided to seize up. No grip, couldn't form a fist, bones into the knuckles hurt greatly. So weird! I made 56 and stopped. I have local friends asking for some, and I can't say 'no', so I will make some more this week. I have gotten to the point that I am not hyper concerned about keeping out all the air when worn. I think that's next to impossible with homemade masks. So I've stopped fretting about it and will just make a nice pleated mask, with a nose piece but no filter pocket. I did score 144 yards of elastic this week! So that should be good for . . . 370 masks. Dang!
In other sewing news, I found a set of batiks that I bought probably 5 years ago because I really, really like the colors. So I am going to stitch up an easy quilt for myself this week, too. That kind of sewing doesn't create anxiety. emoticon

Linda, maybe they shared the masks with others who needed them more. A thank you would be nice though. I finished 3 languishing projects this week, thankfully. Just parts of projects that are ongoing.
Can you post a link to Tula Pinks' book Amy. It sounds interesting, the tiny 6 inch blocks. You will need many of them for a quilt. What gives with the tiny blocks? Bonnie is stuck on those right now. Whatever happened to big blocks? Carol

Linda - that is so disappointing.

Amy - Please post a picture of your kit project. The Tula Pink project sounds challenging. My quilt club had a two-year block of the month from a Tula Pink book. The quilts were very interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing yours.

Now I'm working on sewing up 72 neck pillows for my Women's Sewing group. Just before I was to start sewing April's batch, our social distancing and no gatherings greater than 10 were ordered. Then I also picked up my batch to sew for May. When I finish them, I'll return to church and hopefully someone will pick them up to stuff them and finish them. If not, they'll be ready for our next meeting which hopefully will be in September.

Linda--wow not even one thank you. It would disappoint me too.

Now that the kit top and all of its leftover scraps are off my project table, I decided to work on blocks I started last year. I bought a book of modern quilt block patterns by Tula Pink and a small layer cake. I started making blocks from patterns in the book out of the layer cake and two different solids. I challenged myself to make as many blocks from the book as I could from those fabrics. I had over a dozen done and another dozen cut out and then I was bored with the project and just left it in a stack on my table. Today, I finished sewing all the blocks I had cut out. I will probably continue on with this personal challenge again. I'm not at all sure what I will end up with and maybe the mystery of it all will encourage me to keep going! The blocks are only 6 inches finished and some have over 25 pieces (many way less too).

Nancy, nice job. I made 27 for the grocery store and didn't even get a thank you. Makes you feel kind of like "why did I waste my time?" (especially since I still haven't seen anyone wearing them.

My pastor emailed me and 3 other women last night about supplying masks for our city school bus drivers. They deliver meals to school children as a continuation of their school lunch program. I will be contacted by the woman coordinating the mask procurement, so it looks like I will be making more masks.

I am amazed at the amount of T-shirt yarn from 1 shirt (men's L).

Our guild has made over 1100 masks, one woman is at 410. I've yet to make the first one. I have an old cotton scarf from my Decorating Den days that is the perfect size to wear around my neck and pull up if needed. Works well. I have a few projects to work on. Carol

Still sewing masks with ties but I have 105 yards of elastic coming. Hopefully it will get here before we don't need masks any longer. My supply of masks was wiped out this morning so I'll have to make a few more this weekend.

If you run out of elastic, I've found that using 6 1/2" to 7" t shirt ties the same was elastic works well and they're soft and comfortable.

Not making any masks this weekend.

I made one halter-style mask but it seemed to wide, too long, and it wasn't that easy to gather up the sides. Next I'm going to try Bonnie Hunter's hybrid pattern - a mask with pleats but with halter-style ties.

Making masks. 50+ and counting! Ran out of elastic, tried ties but they take so long. Finally cut up an old t-shirt 7" the stretchy way and they work find and so soft on the ears!

I bought a kit from Craftsy BOM in 2016 I think . Never used any of it and finally opened the package. OMG there is so much fabric in it and it coordinates with another kit I won at a retreat.
I'm calling my quilt the Construction quilt because of the backing that I purchased 5 yards of on sale for 50% off.
The pattern on the front is actually the disappearing pinwheel # 5 that was a block swap in our guild. I won the blocks and had the top done for 2 years. www.youtube.com/watch?v=916s

It might look like flannel because of the sunshine and shadows on it but it is cotton.

Great job Carol! Sometimes, I buy kits if I really like the project as I don't have to reinvent the wheel and over buy! I have also bought deeply discounted kits just for the fabric. I have two kits left to do in my stash of stuff (one of them is the postcard from Sweden kit which has 36 FQ of beautiful solids). Sometimes I buy just the pattern of a kit if I already have lots of similar fabrics in my stash. There are times that I buy extra of some of the fabrics to make some planned changes such as enlarging the quilt.

Linda check out the projects and swaps thread here on Q & L where I posted Gudrun's quiltalong. I think Bonnie Hunter is pairing up with her as well.
I have 6 rows of the tester quilt done and nine more to do. It takes me about 30 min to do one row with applique so 2 a day will finish me up in plenty of time. It is turning out nice.
That is a nice quilt Bev. light dark, light dark. Carol

Bev - beautiful quilt. Praying for your dad.

I am working on getting caught up on all the kilt/tartan projects I need to get done. So, no quilting now emoticon

Here is a picture of a piper's plaid I was fringing. I am done with all three now.

I started working on a kilt yesterday. I have three more to do after this one. Then I have 3 kilts I need to alter.

Bev, what a beautiful quilt. I hope you are safe.

I'm working on projects. Hoping to quilt a few quilts during the social distancing since we can have no family dinners and we are supposed to stay home in our own families as much as possible.

Sent some yarn home to a grand to work on a project during her time out of school.

Bev--that is just beautiful!

I have posted my projects on a few other threads but I will only be posting on this thread for sometime. All of my rows on the kit are sewn. I just have to sew them together and maybe add a border to enlarge the quilt as it is on the small side.

Bev - beautiful quilt.

I'm working on my hexified panel OBW. I'm sewing the half-hexies into vertical rows. It's a challenge to find a way to chain piece them yet still keep them in order. The seams are only 2.5 inches long.

That is pretty Bev. Lets include the pattern name if there is one. I could do that pattern with all the HST I have left over from Frolic that I may or may not finish. CArol

Bev, that is a beautiful quilt! I hope you are able to give it to him personally.

As of yet, not working on anything in particular. Think I'll do some straightening up in there.
