several of you sound like me when I was raising children. I had 4 kids. I worked full time. had to clean, cook, laundry, took classes, help with homework, etc...But because I wanted to lose weight so badly I had to do what I had to do. I worked out after I got the kids on the bus, but before I had to leave for work. I worked swing shifts. think... afternoon today, midnight tomorrow, etc...I never worked steady shifts. Before I knew it I lost almost 50 lbs after I had my last baby. It was a very difficult time back then. I have had weight problems most of my life. For the last several years it hasn't been as bad. I had to change my way of thinking, and stop using food as a crutch. It was a lifestyle change for me. Not just a "lose weight" then return to the same old pattern. Once I figured that out, i've been staying within a healthy weight range. I am now 54 yrs old. Work part time now, i'm a volunteer, kids are grown and raised and on their own. I've been married for almost 30 yrs. However, I did gain just over 5 lbs during the holiday this year! You can do this!!

Yes, I find it hard to consistently do anything. I have 2 small kids (5 and 7), work full time, and DH works 24 hour shifts, so I'm a single mom every third day.
I wear a fitbit and trying to keep up my steps every day is one way that I can keep moving - even if it's just dancing with my daughter while I make dinner. Every little bit helps.

(Most of my exercise is done before the kids get up, on breaks at work, and after they go to bed...)

What if you fail?
You will.
Then, you move on.

Hello MOM2512227,

I am right there with you. I am a single mom, I work, and go to school part time. I am excited and anxious to workout and lose weight, but like you it's finding the time and having the energy. I find it to be a challenge to shut everyone and everything out for at least 30 minutes a day just to fit in my workout. The time that comes available is usually late at night when I am exhausted. I assume we are alike in the aspect that we only have ourselves to depend on when it comes to motivation?

With that said I know we can do this. Just start with a small daily goal, even if it's 10 minutes a day working out. It is a start. I have a five year old who is by my side at all times so I try to incorporate small exercises that she will be excited about doing with me, like jumping jacks, and teaching her how to jump rope, skipping, stretching, when the weather is nice I load her up in the stroller and go for a walk (I haven't mastered running yet). When I get her to bed I am so tired and want to take a hot shower or bath and crawl into bed, but before hand I manage to squeeze in 25 squats, 20-25 sit-ups, 60 second planks, and arm weights.

I hope this helped a little? I know you can do it. Don't ever give up on yourself. You are an amazing, strong, confident woman. I have faith in you.

I like going to the quote section here on spark maybe, or a search engine and looking up weight loss quotes. I find the more motivating things you search for, the easier it is to stay on track. *hugs* emoticon emoticon

I understand losing motivation. My main goal is to cut out something new every week or every other week. like this week is no pop. By next week or two weeks from now ill pick another of my weaknesses. Hope that helps!

When I'm feeling glued to the chair I drag myself to youtube and look up a few fitness motivation videos. I'm raring to go after 10 or 15 minutes. Hope that helps.

Tifalva,
TIHAITIEN is right on, pick just one thing to commit to. Otherwise it can be overwhelming.

With exercise, just need to commit to 5 minutes. The first step is usually the hardest and once you get started its easy to keep going.

Focus on why you want to get healthier (not just lose weight). Most of us will find it is easier to live a healthier lifestyle versus dealing with the health issues that come with not taking care of ourselves.

Make an inspiration board and look at it every day to remind yourself why you are doing this.

You can do this!

That's a good idea, to focus on one main goal, but I would add that the only thing that seems to work for me is having a goal that you can't get out of (like a 5k run with a partner who will guilt you into training and doing the run, my husband was a good source of this) or a goal that lets your competitive side come out (like one of the challenges on this site with prizes or a reward system that you set up). I know I shouldn't have to trick myself into being motivated, but I have found I do. I think Chris Powell is great but I think some of those people just want the free surgery and the $25,000 walmart card. I know I'd work hard for those things! This site is great at giving me ideas to challenge myself.

I have been over weight since I was 9 and started dieting when I was 12. 30 years later Iím still working at it. One thing I know for sure is that I really want a healthy lifestyle. I have 1 main goal and thatís to be able to sleep through the night and that is what Iím working towards. Pick something to work towards other than how youíll look or how much time it will take. Pick one activity that you can make a habit like brushing your teeth. Mine was eating breakfast. Every evening prepare for at least one meal or snacks for the following day. Pick one thing you can focus on and master it than add one more. We all can do this as long as we don't put a time limit on it. We just need to focus on the little things because they eventually all add up.

Ugh! Here we go again! I swear I need someone like Chris Powell who will live with me to make sure I eat right and get my lazy butt out of bed and/or off the couch to exercise. It's much to easy to do nothing and eat horribly.
