I'm in a slump, not because I dislike "diet foods", but that I get about a week into whatever diet and it's like I'm too mentally tired/lazy to keep going. Motivation wanes......Reading these boards is helping to pep me back up. :)

Have you gone off track and need help getting back on the right track.

Do you hate "diet" foods like yogurt and need some help?

Does your family not want to change to a healthier way of eating.

Lets talk about it and help each other.

Okay everybody- my husband sent this to me- it was an eye opener for some items. It shows common everyday objects next to a "serving" size portion of different foods. How large should that serving of pasta be? How big should your potato be? etc.

AZIAS_MOMMY - weigh to go!!! Great job getting in all your water and losing the weight. (BTW - your little one is absolutely adorable!!)
emoticon

I had a great workout at the gym this morning - I did a half hour strength workout with the trainer, 15 minutes on the elliptical (my former nemesis) and 10 minutes on the bike - by the time I was done, I was dripping, but I felt so invigorated - love those endorphins!!

Have a great day all - Juli

I have been trying to get my water in and guess what??? I lost all the weight I had gained back...and 1 more lb on top of that! So I am going to continue with the water and being good with my food (I actually don't eat big portions and so I know that is not the problem..I am great about reading serving sizes too...) I am having a leftover porkchop w/ cucumber slices and calorie-wise ranch dressing (my fruit/veggie weapon of choice at the moment). Then I am going to clean my house and burn some calories..WOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO I am pumped today!

For the 4th of July my daughter made a wonder fruit salad and it was so good. I think we'll start making more of that and just keep trying different things with the veggies. Thanks for all the replies and ideas. I will definitely start expanding my horizons.

Goal to lose 12 lbs by February 22, 2008, when I go off for a weekend alone with hubby. DONE!

Goal #2: Lose 7 pounds by March 19, 20 years together with my husband. Still working on it. But had a fun time.

Askaherm, have you tried preparing them in different ways? I love raw veggies, but they can get old, too. I'll do different dips, or different combos, I'll steam them lightly with different spices, lemon juice one day, roasted garlic and olive oil another day, salt and pepper a third day. So say, I can have carrots that will taste completely different 4 times in a week! Also I do weird things like puree or grate them and put them into sauces and then on pasta. Little tricks like that to eke out one more serving here and there. You can do it! And WHEN you do, cause you will, please share your tricks with us. Okay?

Mikerz, No jury would convict... lolol My husband decided to eat a little less and dropped 25 pounds in a month. I hate him. I mean, I love him, he's a great guy. But I HATE HIM for losing the weight so quickly and effortlessly. I don't think a jury would convict if something was to happen to him. Like a homemade cake found it's way into his lunchbox instead of the grilled chicken and veggies packed for tomorrow... hmmm... Some well placed M&M's on his desk at work perhaps? You know, just to slow him down a bit so I can catch up. emoticon

ASKAHERM - have you flipped through the Spark recipes to see if there is anything veggie that appeals to you there? I used to overbuy veggies and then I'd be stuck with all these random extras - I combatted that by chopping up whatever leftover veggies I had (usually zucchini, brocolli, peppers and onions) and stir frying with a little olive oil, then adding some salsa (I prefer Newman's Own either pineapple or mango) and some fat-free ricotta cheese. It's kinds of a funky veggie stew, but it's a great way to get in lots of extra veggies. For fruits, I use frozen fruits (berries, mangos) and some fat-free vanilla yogurt in a blender and make a slushy smoothie.

It is quite possible that the muscle is the reason for the weight staying the same. Muscle weight takes up less space than fat weight. As you build your muscles you are also helping your metabolism so you should hopefully start seeing a decrease soon.

That sounds so familiar. It seems like I am starting to see a pattern in myself. The weight stays the same or even a couple of times goes up, but I loose in inches. Then, all of the sudden the scale reflects a lower weight. I would love to know why, but for now am really trying to train myself to be content with the smaller size when the scale doesn't seem to be budging.

Newest goal: To loose 12 pounds by the new year.

First 100 miles walked - 3/21-7/4
Second 100 miles - 8/3

Well, the slump I'm in is the one where my weight is hovering between the same two lbs. for the past six days now, between 200-201 and I can't seem to get it to go down. However, last week, for example, I lost three quarters of an inch in each of my thighs. I just don't understand how I could be losing the inches, yet my weight isn't going down. Unless it's the muscle forming, but that would have to be a bit of muscle.

Try cooking your vegetables different and see if that helps. I have been eating a lot of squash lately. I use the Parkay fat free butter spray to cook with. It tastes really good and is fat free calorie free. Try it! I look for the veggies with the least calories. I also eat egg beaters cooked in the parkay.

I've gone off track in the sense that I haven't been eating hardly any fruits or veggies. My calories are still within range, but it seems I've gotten in bored of all the veggies and fruits. I probably need to branch out more to try new foods again.

I agree. Don't downplay 2 pounds. Just think of it as that being 2 pounds less than you had before and 2 pounds closer to your goal.

CLBURK - don't downplay your 2 pound loss - you may have lost more in inches and that is what your husband is commenting on - I've noticed that even during weeks when I haven't lost anything, my measurements go down.

All of these topics are things I have been thinking about lately. I am OK now, but I know that there will probably be some hard times ahead, it's just the way life works. There are easy times and hard times. I have been thinking about ways to prepare for the hard times.

I have a very sweet husband who just doesn't understand what its like to have to loose weight. He has had to work to keep a normal weight up until just recently. So sometimes I feel like he's not listening and sometimes I get really frustrated with him when he makes suggestions about where I can cut calories. I must say he complimented my weight loss out of the clear blue the other day. He says it really shows now. Funny because in the past 4 weeks I have only lost 2 pounds and I'm pretty sure 2 pounds don't make that big of a difference.

The feeling of being deprived has sabotaged my weight loss efforts many times before. Right now I am trying to minimize the risk by branching out and trying a bunch of new things. I have discovered that I would rather have a bowl of strawberries than a piece of cake.... Who would have thought? I do alow myself to indulge from time to time. I figure when I'm starting to get tired, and cranky about food its better to splurge in control than to risk a binge later on in the day. So far that has worked out pretty well.

Newest goal: To loose 12 pounds by the new year.

Second 100 miles - 8/3

Its really hard when you live with someone that has a high metabolism and loves to eat. Especially if they tell you their getting fat, and they aren't. But most of the times my family at home and my parents know what I can eat, what I can't and are supportive. But it does really suck to tell them, no we cannot have soul food, nothing there is healthy.

Hello all. I have found that I can have good foods and diet too. It just depends on how those foods are cooked. I eat fruits and I like the Quaker rice cakes snacks. They are good and low in calories. There are even some 100 calorie popcorn bags out there that taste really good. Drinking lots of water makes a difference. If you can't drink plain water, try the crystal light or walmart brand, or the flavored waters (without the calories). Dry not to drink too many caffeinated diet colas. I read an article here on SP that the caffeine makes you lose water that your body needs to increase your metabolism. Sprite zero's are pretty good. My husband is very supportive of me and is encouraging me alot.

You are so right about not denying yourself. I craved a Toojay's Gorgonzola Bacon Burger with fries. So- I planned for it! I told myself that if I ate within my caloric range for 5 days in a row, I could have that burger on Monday. I did it!!! =) I enjoyed that reward, too. I made sure that I exercised that day so I wouldn't feel any guilt at all.
I love dark chocolate, the life it saves could be my own. Or my children's, husband's, friend's... I just plan for it. I put it on my nutrtion tracker in the morning, so I can be sure not to overindulge later in the day. I then get to eat it that night. If I had a bad day, I just don't get that piece of chocolate. You can bet I do better the next day. lol
I eat healthy- occasionally I indulge in foods that used to be my diet. THAT's the difference. You can have that chocolate truffle. Eat one, even though the serving size is 8. You can have that Bacon Gorgonzola Burger and fries, but do it once or twice in a month instead of weekly. Watch what you eat for the rest of the day and exercise a little more that day. Things like that should be fine. Or maybe my diet before I started losing this weight was just THAT BAD.... that I can still indulge in this stuff and lose weight? Lolol. I dunno.
But I can tell you that if I didn't allow indulgences every now and then, I wouldn't succeed on this lifestyle change plan.

Now, now- I charge for my autograph.

AZIAS_MOMMY One of the things I've learned is that portion control is the best thing. By using portion control I don't deny myself any foods that I want to eat. I do try to make sure I don't eat the really decadent foods to often but I don't deny myself. There are times now that I will decide that I really don't want the item after all but if I really want it then I have a small portion and if I want more then I promise myself I can have more in the future just not right now.

My husband is supportive in most ways but he can be trying sometimes. But he does encourage me. Oh by the way you don't have to give up everything you like. You just find alternative times and ways to cut portions. For instant I love home style popcorn. So Sunday evenings is my popcorn night I eat it instead of dinner. I tried to stay away from it. But popcorn has always been my comfort food. but instead of eating it every other day I just have it on Sundays. I also love ice cream. I get the lower sugar and all and get a bowl half the size of a cereal bowl and sort of fill it. Once or twice a week for my evening snack. You can do this even if you have to start over every day.
Also I know they say not to weigh every day but I noticed when I did it kept me more aware of what I was going to eat that day. I was going to change to once a week listening to the site talks about weighing in once a week. But this weekend I read an article from a magazine (I think). That said a study showed people who weighed in everyday had a 100% better weight loss than those who weighed in once a week. That convinced me.

There's a difference between interest and commitment. When you're interested in doing something, you do it only when it's convenient. When you're committed to something, you accept no excuses; only results.

That is great that your family is helping you. When cooking food that I will be eating my daughters try to find low or non fat items. My husband has said when he comes home that he is willing to at least taste the foods that we are making healthier.

Hi Azias-Mommy,

Have you considered the possibility that you are retaining water? If you are doing everything right, don't stop. You might also look at what time of month it is, how much salt you are eating (it holds water in your body) and how much water you are drinking. Believe it or not, drinking MORE water helps with water retention because it pushes the old, stagnant water out! Just a thought

I am slumpin'.....I gained weight every day this week for some reason (I was down to 186 now this morning I was all the way up to 190 again!!!) and I haven't done anything wrong. I get depressed........I don't mind doing the work if it's working. But it's hard to motivate yourself to give up all of your favourite foods for 3 lbs.

I'm not yet in a slump, but I tend to give up even if what I am doing is working. Right now, I am tracking my food intake and getting some sort of exercise daily, but I usually go gang busters for the first week or so and then stop - I don't know if I get impatient, bored, discouraged, lazy or what. It's funny that I know what it will take and I have seen things like increased exercise and food tracking work, but for some reason I give up on them.

I have an experience about not getting family support. My husband would happily eat bologna sandwiches 3 meals a day till he dies, I'm not kidding! He grew up without getting to eat fresh fruits and vegetables, and considers them a luxury for the rich. He has squawked something awful over my new food choices, but he has admitted that I am getting smaller when he holds me, and he does like that. I had to go outside my immediate family for help getting fruits and vegetables. My mother and one of my sisters send money to my other sister, who has a car and can get to the cheap groceries, to buy me $25 of fruits and veggies a week! Isn't that great?

I guess what I am trying to say is that where there is a will there is a way.
