I drink it throughout the day, then I don't have so much left at night. I am going all day, but not at night :-)

What a great thread, reading your posts have inspired me. I generally just drink coffee and the occasional diet pop. Anyone have tips for getting the fluids in and NOT having to get up for the potty all night? How early do you have to stop with the water in order to have a good night's sleep? :)

I really don't like plain water. Don't worry, you won't be the first person to call me weird. :P I flavor my water with the Wally World brand sugar-free drink mix. I make a gallon of it and put it in the fridge and have no problem drinking it that way. Also I've noticed when I'm walking I tend to drink quite a bit of water.

I usually have trouble drinking my water also, but I've decided to try a little harder! So, for the past few days (and I intend to continue), I have been filling a 2 liter bottle and putting in by the computer where I'm at most of the time when I'm home anyway. I drink it while I'm surfing on SP and so far, have had no trouble getting it down. I also like to use the drink tubes like crystal light sometimes........but, only when I get tired of the taste of water.

RE: Avon botle: What a neat idea...but I still wouldn't trust our old rusty pipes at school and now they went to chlorinated "city" water, too

I find that if I can keep a 1/2 liter bottle at my desk I remember to finish 1 b4 lunch and one after lunch. THen if I have a a cup upon rising and b4 bed, I've made my 8.

I have a horrible time with water. People always say, just add lemon to it. That's not convenient... I do what is convenient (which is why I'm in this situation). So to curb that I got a plastic carafe (from Target for 3 bucks I think) and put lemon slices and water in it. Now it sits in my fridge and I'm learning to drink it because it's nice and cold and refreshing by this point. It's only been a couple days and I've been better (not anywhere near what I need), but normally I have to taint it with Crystal Light, which isn't bad, but still not the same. I have some of those True Lemon packets too, but I haven't tried them yet.

The problem with coffee is that it has caffeine in it which is a diuretic which can cause you to lose water so you need to make sure that you also drink lots of beverages that do not have caffeine. I think Spark recommends no more than two cups of coffee a day. You also have to watch out if you put cream and sugar in it because those calories will add up fast.

Thanks for the information CJ. I have been really bad about getting in the amount of water I used to drink lately. It shows up in all sorts of ways. I am glad that I read this. It is giving me the incentive to start drinking again.
Thanks everyone for your ideas.

I'm usually terrible about drinking water...but I never realized how dehydrated I was until I really made the effort to get those 8 glasses in every day! In just a couple of days I've noticed my skin isn't as tight, and I'm not quite as hungry between meals.

I got one of the 1 liter Poland spring bottles and I refill it....two of those equals all 8 glasses, so I just have to make sure I fill it twice all day - less to remember!

I get my water I drink 8oz every hour on the hour. There is a clock in the office that makes noise every hour. When I hear that noise I get water.

I want to get to a healthy weight and stay there forever. I don't have to make huge changes all at once, just small ones consistently.

Water intake is really hard for me, I find that 2 things help me, One is having a bottle of water whether it is from the tap or not I am more likely to drink it out of a bottle than a glass, and second I usually have a protien shake twice a day so i use ice cubes and water to make it kind of like a slushie/smoothie and usually end up drinking about 40 to 50 oz of water that way. Which for me is a HUGE increase.

I heard if you use Ice water instead of room temp, your body will burn more calories becasue it takes the body more energy to work the cold.

I gotta have ice in the water too. I keep a large glass of ice and keep refilling it with water all day. It is easy to get the allowance in that way and is painless. The more I cut out other drinks the more often I object to the over sweetness of artificial flavor. I am drinking almost exclusively water and occasional wine.

I finally figured out what works for me. I have Sam's Choice water (20 oz.) so I put 3 in the fridge plus drink another cup and I have my 8 cups. I also add sugar free flavoring if I need that extra boost to make me drink. But, I try to only do that once a day.

I drink hot water with a slice of orange, lemon or lime. I find this is great for the digestion and skin. In winter it is easier to drink hot water rather than cold.

I have been doin well with my water intake, and trust me , I used to barely drink a few sips a day, and that was on a good day. Now I am finally losing weight and I truly think the water intake has ALOT to do with me FINALLY losing weight. That make me excited. So I have been drinking as much as I possibly can, and I live in Colorado and the water is delicious.. good luck everyone..

Cherylsfluff, I know it is an eye opener. Watching my students faces as they calculated their individual water requirements, realizing that not only could they not count the ounces of Cola or Coffee sitting in front of them to their fluid requirement, it was dehydrating them. Then they had to add that additional amount of ounces to their daily water/fluid total.

But when I don't follow the rule I can tell the difference. Toxins remain in the body and I feel more sluggish - my skin is flaky and dull looking - and lines show up more easily.

Think of the trips to the bathroom/loo as short walks lol.
Blessings,
CJ

Greetings everyone! Here is a way to figure your body's water requirement. Everybody is different. I have been in the Beauty Industry for 40 yrs. and directing and teaching for 28 of that. One hint I gave my students might help here.

The way to calculate how much water YOUR body needs is simple. You take your total weight and divide it by three (3) that number, is the amout of ounces that your body needs just to maintain proper fluid levels. That means to work properly and to have beter looking and feeling skin. So a body of 150 pounds would need 50 ounces of water. BUT here comes the interesting part. As written in an earlier post only true herbal tea can be counted in your water amount. Infact ANY drink that contains caffine (coffee, soda or tea) acts to dehydrate the body. That means every ounce you drink that contains caffine must be added additionally to your total ounce requirement. It has a double negative effect. Not only does it not count in your water requirement its dehydrating action makes it a negative fluid. So if you had a 16 ounce caffinated drink today thats an additional 16 ounces of water you must add to your ounce total. emoticon

Try this for a week or two. You will not be as hungry, your skin will be a lot more hydrated and you will feel better. What have you got to loose?
Blessings
CJ

I look at water like this, can you run your vehicle without the proper fluids? NO! Your body is the same way, without it you will run down and soon croak.

I just can't drink 8 glasses of plain water. I like my really cold and lemon slices. I recently discovered, from a promotion at my healthclub, that Propel(as in Propel Water) has powder packs (similar to Crystal Light). I now carry a few packets to work plus my emptied Poland Spring water bottle (which I do wash out) and drink the spring water from the cooler at work. The berry flavor is just sweet enough that I feel like I'm having a treat plus I'm getting vitamins in along with the water comsumption! And by reusing an emptied bottle, I'm not adding to the landfill - another bonus for me.

In the army all I drank was water it was always on us so it was conveniant. when I got out and moved home I was pregnant and worked in a hot factory where I also consumed more then enough water I have a 64 once cup and I would drink 3 a day yeah I know wow. but the last 2 years I dont drink enough are ta water is filterd but still I can tast a diffrence so I started drinking bottled water it cost about 5 dollars a week but its cheeper if you buy it in the galions and but it in your own bottles. Any ways when I started this change of life I tryed to drink water alot I dont keep sugar drinks in my house any ways so that kept me from drinking sodas and sweet stuff, but I made a lot of tea wich is good for you and so I was told by my Dr. it is ok to to drink instead of water if its a true herbal tea like green tea and so on. (tea bags not powders or premade bottled) But after living in the south during my Army years I come to drinking sweet tea so I had to learn to limit the sugar. Instead I turned to water. I was hard the first 3 days but by the end of day 3 all I wanted was water I made my self drink it and only it for the first 3 days and studies say by then it washes out all the toxins and caffine addictions ( only if you drink strictly water) i am not sure about that but I know now All I want is water the bad thing is it has to be bottled its the only kind I like my mom then tried it and she to could not get enough water her coffee intake went from 6 cups to 1 a day. Also some times I put a little lemon in it to pump it up a little you can also squeeze a little fresh fruit juice in too.

Life is only what you make of it.

The way I make sure to get all the glasses of water I need is to have one with every meal and snack I have throughout the day.
Also, I carry a bottle of water around with me EVERYWHERE, so that if I am thirsty I just untwist that cap and have at it:)
Good luck everyone!!!

It is so hot right now that I have no problem getting my water in each day. I start the day with a full glass with my medicine. I generally fill a liter bottle and make sure it's cold.

I will say that I have not given up coffee or diet coke so you can beat me now but when I drink my water I don't drink as much as the past. Where I live going for coffee is an event! You are served one cup with a full glass of water..........that's convenient so I get more water in there too.

I'm just a work in progress.

Nice thread,

Maybe it will help me to focus on drinking my water. I hate water of any kind. I'm a coffee drinker and I love hot teas.

I stand at the sink and coutinue to swallow until the 8 ounce glass is empty. YUCK. I shutter and actually say "yuck" or "eewwww".

It helps me to think of it as medicine, don't have to like it just drink it.

I'll try to edit this post daily on the amount I drink. Starting with yesterday...

July 20, 8 glasses
July 21, 8 glasses
July 22, 9 glasses
July 23, 9 glasses
July 24, 9 glasses
July 25, 9 glasses
I didn't get a link to this thread until today so there are some days missing.

Water is all I drink. Some days I get do sick of it but I just keep drinking. Of course that doesn't help sleeping through the night. I find I carry it with me all over in a bottle or water jug. I have taken over the big plastic cups in my house because they are twice the sixe of my glass glasses.

I'm doing pretty good with the whole water thing.....I've been either really close, on the dot, or slightly over my 8 glasses a day since I started on SP 2 weeks ago!

The only thing I have had besides water in the last 2 weeks was an orange juice one morning and 1 1/2 Sprites, not too bad considering I'm a Coke-a-holic and am used to drinking 6-8 Cokes a day!!!!

Now for me it has been baby step. AND after 2 1/2 weeks I finally got to 8+ glasses of water. emoticon

I hate water. Hate it. And the city here periodically shocks the drinking water system with so much chlorine that it smells (and tastes)like a swimming pool. I was a firm believer in that study that came out a couple years ago that said fluids are fluids, no matter the form... so, I was strickly a diet soda girl (and I always got at least 64 oz.) But as part of this new leaf, I've been making the effort. I bought a brita pitcher and a TON of lemons. I made sure that I took lemons to work so that I would drink water there. It definitely helped to have a larger glass so that I didn't have to run to the fridge as often. But if I can do it, anyone can... (As a side note, the caffeine withdrawl has been brutal)

Lucky for me I like water and right out of most taps (live in Maine...most water is good) I drink at least 9 24 ounce glasses of water at day. I can take up to 3 days to finish a diet pepsi and I don't drink coffee. Water is it for me. Now if I could just make pure raw sugar as healthy as water I would be good!

I put my water in a big insulated mug and drink it through the straw. I find that if I don't see how much water I have left to drink I don't get bogged down with the "uuuugghhh"s. Adding lemon to water is also great. This not only gives it some flavor but also acts as an appetite suppressant (sp?).

I have never drank diet pop. I refuse to eat/drink anything with aspartame.

I use a bottle I got from the grocery store, its called H2O on the go, and it holds 2.2 liters of water. I usually fill it 1/4 of the way with water at night and stick it in the freezer. Then in the morning I take it out of the freezer and add cold water to the frozen water, its great cause I love my water cold, and the frozen water at the bottom keeps it cold for most of my day at work. :)

Happy water drinking everyone!! emoticon

First off, I feel if you drink one glass when you wake up, one before lunch, one before supper and one before bed you have already gotten 4 and adding the other 4 in is easy once you have a schedule set to drink them. I actually drink 2 glasses with each of my scheduled times in my BIG see through cup!!! I also read that using a fancy glass can motivate you to drink more....

I told my granddaughter, who is almost 4 yrs. old and extremely cute, to phone me at work and remind me: "Granny, drink your water...don't forget to drink your water because it's very "healfy"! This gives me that added boost that I need during the long dragged-out afternoons at the office and reminds me to sip some more water.

I drank diet sodas for about 14 years and used diet sweetners in everything. I had leg cramps insomnia and a host of other ailments during that time to. my Dr. couldn't figure out why everything we tried failed to work. Then i did a little elimination with my diet it took a while but when i stopped using diet sweetners and diet sodas most of my ailments went away. the leg cramps were the worst imaginable, now they are gone gone gone. no more diet sweetners for me of anykind. luckily for me i have never been a sweet junky so giving up swets don't bother me. what I miss is the breads and starches I could't eat a meal with out at least one. now i am down to about 1 a day at most.

I feel that with the large amounts of fluids which we are encouraged to drink, that we need something healthy. Seeing that is the main reason to lose weight. I can't imagine drinking bottles of water with man made chemicals in it by the gallons, for the rest of my life. That is alot of junk going into my system. I usually start my morning off with a bottle of Oolong Coffee Flavored Tea by Garden of Life, iced. Then water for the entire day. If bored with plain water I add a splash, and I mean a splash of real fruit juice to the water. ~J

I love my Gal. Jug I got from Walmart. I keep it 1/4 full at night and stick it in the freezer. When I wake up I get it out and fill it with water. I drink on it and by the middle of the day I have to refill it. Everyone at work encourages me in my drinking it because they know that the water has helped me in losing my weight.
I used to not like drinking plain water now I don't like to add anything to it except sometimes a little lemon or lime.
All I can say is keep water handy and drink it all day long if you can. Add something if you need too but the best thing is just the plain water. emoticon

I don't drink enough water. I start out the day okay, but end up not drinking nealy enough. I usually have a soda or milk instead. Since I don't drink enough during the day, especially when its hot out I get headaches.

I find it much easier to drink my water if I use a straw . . . something about the straw just makes the drinking wiz by.

When I exercise outside I wear a Camel hydration bag which holds two liters and actually drink the whole thing on very hot days because I'm just slurping through a tube.

Keep your eye on the prize.

It's only taken me two months to get over craving my diet soda. I had some for the first time in weeks today and I ended up drinking only a few sips and being done. I did finally get used to water with no flavor. It tastes good to me if it's super cold.

I love to have something to drink close! So I just keep a large glass of water with me everywhere. I get my water in easy. The problem is, if my water isn't handy, I grab a pepsi or dr pepper. I think I could go without eating if I could just have soda & water!!! LOl

I make popsicles using Crystal light and find them very helpful at night when I feel like snacking...Also I take 2 one-litre bottles of water to work and since I don't like drinking plain water and as much as I've tried to force myself, I started adding Crystal Light Single packages to the bottles to give them just a hint of added flavour and since I started doing this, I've been drinking much more during the day, in fact, on most days, I finish the 2 bottles! emoticon

Well, I live a good 12 miles from any store so it's easier for me to cut back on sodas. We go to the grocery every 2 weeks and this time I let my 9 year old pick out one 12 pack soda as long as its diet. So I ended up with some drinks that I dont even like! That ought to do it!

Mary, great job on 5 months! WOW! I did not coffee for 9 months, and then broke it for 5 days. :-( I'm back on my streak and am 6 days strong. :-)

Soda, harder...I don't drink that much - mostly just when I go out to eat - but in the summer - I drink WAY too much! Nothing like a cold soda at the beach!

Soda is not a diuretic, caffeine is. Sprite, 7 up, club soda, root beer all are sodas with no caffeine. Of course we won't mention the sugar, lol. I drink very little soda because I can't stand the taste of diet. I would rather drink water than put those chemicals into my body. I do not trust aspertame. There is some anecdotal evidence that is can casue some fairly significant health problems.

I don't know if this will help anyone, but I am a terrible binge eater if I get upset or stressed... I started freezing crystal light at night. Then when I find myself picking through the fridge and get a cube to eat on! I get to chew something and get a little water all at the same time without going haywire on the calories!

I think as far as soda goes, it is a diuretic (sp?). That means it actually flushes water out of your system. There are several Spark articles on this topic. One of them says that for every soda you drink, make sure you add the same amount of water to your daily intake. Hope this helps.

I do the Crystal Light packets in the majority of my daily water. It has helped me get more water into my diet because I hate just plain water.

If you take responsibility for yourself you will develop a hunger to accomplish your dreams.

You might have to cut back at first and then cut it out completely.
Also if you have been drinking something like Pepsi then you might have caffeine withdrawals.

Thanks! I got my ticker :)

I think I'm going through the withdrawal. Any way to cope with that? Do you drink more water to flush out your system? I really have never been a water drinker, neither has my family, so I am not totally sure about it...

I still drink it from time to time but it is bad for you. It can leach the calcium out of teeth and bones.

I know I feel better now that I don't drink so much.
Give it a try and see what happens.

You can find the weight ticker on your Spark page. There is also some other wonderful information under the F.A.Q. thread.

But is it really bad for you? I asked a nutritionist and she sort of scoffed it off, as long as it was diet soda. I had always heard it was bad too, so I try to avoid it, but it's hard! Is iced tea the same way?

And, how do you get that really cool ticker??

The downside to the soda is the caffeine and carbonation that is bad for you.

During the day I mostly drink Crystal Light but mornings and evenings I enjoy those Celestial Seasons hot teas. I LOVE the Honey Lemon Ginseng Green Tea! I usually get in 10-12 cups a day. Does anyone know if it helps to drink more? I see where some of you drink alot more than me... maybe I should step it up a little? emoticon

I used to think that way about milk and juice until I read an article here on spark. You shouldn't only drink those items but it does help to remember that they have water in them. Of course you have to count the calories. I usually drink so much water that I don't have to worry about the milk and juice but count them as bonuses.

My favorite is to drink hot tea in the morning along with a glass of water. Sometimes I will have a juice, like v8 splash, but usually go for the hot tea. My mug is over 2 cups a day, pretty big, but I only count 2 cups.

I like what lothornton1 brought up, what about flavored water, does it really not have any calories, and how good is it for your body? What do they put in it to flavor it??? I just got a bottle of strawberry flavored and every time I drink it I feel a little guilty because it's like I'm drinking soda...

IMHO...milk, juice and fruits should be counted in the food catagory. While they are sources of hydration, they are mainly sources of vitamins and nutrients. This thread should focus on water and getting our 8 servings per day. I am with Kathy, if is sugar free and caffeine free, count it. I have used the little packets you add to water, and they are a nice change to plain water.
The trick to this challenge will be editing your original post, not replying with a new one.

As important as it is to drink lots of water, lets not forget the importance of hydrating our bodies through fruits and veggies that contain lost of water also. Maybe there could be a thread about that too depending on how you decide to structure it. (oh, and yes, I count crystal light too - PLUS there is a generic crystal light sold at walmart with ZERO calories. I know 5 per serving doesn't sound like much but when you drink as much as I do, every little bit helps LOL!)

Skinny - Maybe you could just start 1 Water thread. All Water? Take note of what happens & see if there is a need to divide the thread into several topics??

If it is caffeine and sugar free you can count it. There is a debate about the safety of artificial sweetners but to me if it gets me to drink then I don't worry about it. Oh yea I also count the cup of milk and the cup of juice that I drink with my breakfast. The point is to get your body hydrated and to teach you that you need hydration and not food.

Here is a question that i am dying to know... Can water w/ crystal light added and unsweet tea be counted as water??? Water gets boring time after time!

Why can't each person set a personal water goal for the week or month, which ever way they want to. Then come back to their original reply and edit it to include that day's water intake. That way there won't be 100's of replies to one thread. Just one for each person participating. Just as an example, it can't be titled Water Challenge June 19- 25, or July Water Challenge.

I usually am able to drink 3-4 20 oz. bottles of water each day. I keep a bottle with me at all times.
