I was just asking myself this question today, and since the diuretic in tea is caffeine can't you just get a decaffeinated version? Now if I could just convince myself that unsweet tea is just as tasty as regular, my hubby would be so happy. emoticon

My Dad had a problem with drinking water. He would drink two pots of coffee a day, and that was it. As he got older, his kidneys have taken a beating as a result of not being flushed out. All the doctors we talked to, said, it's fluids. Stay away from carbinated drinks. Tea can be part of your 8 to 12 glasses a day, but mix it up with juices (100% pure)as well as water. I need flavor, I'll be honest, I'll grab a glass of iced tea before I grab a glass of water. . . I know, shame, shame! emoticon

If you read all the articles on the site you will find that the point of water is to make sure you are hydrated. You can get hydration from many different sources not just water. Not saying to skip the water but it isn't worth fighting about the subject. Each person has to decide what is best for them. The site does say to limit tea and coffee because it can cause dehydration however one article that I read recently stated that at least you are still getting fluid in your body. The point is to get as much hydration as you can while counting calories. Milk, juice and watermelon all add liquid to your body along with other nutrients and some calories so you need to drink/eat them in moderation.

I had read in 1 article that if drink tea or coffee, you can count it, just as a little less, I drink weak tea all day. I can count if I shoot for 11 instead of 8.

I acctually asked my dietitian this question, is tea and coffee considered part of the daily water intake. She said that new research indicates that our bodies get used to us drinking coffee and tea and therefore our bodies acctually keep more water than thought, so she said it is most definately counted.

Water is water and tea is tea. Some teas are a diuretic which means it causes the body to lose water. We owe it to ourselves to be honest because we are doing this for ourselves. And when we cheat we only cheat ourselves.

FYI- there is a raging debate about what to consider as water, and what not to consider. After all, a slice of Wonder bread is 85% water- do we call bread water?
Hmmm, inquiring minds. Spark weighs in on the careful yes side, many LC'ers say 'no'.
I call any drink like tea a 1/2 water. It's my way. I know that coffee dehydrates, that tea has it's own properties...
I guess I just like to be moderate. So I am sure to get ample straight up, no anything in it water- and 2 cups of coffee. Which is part of why I get 8-10 glasses of 'water' a day, easy peasy.
Read up, make up your own mind, I guess. I do think that clear, clean, perfectly wonderful water does it's own thing. The trick- drink a glass fast, then pay attention for the next 20 minutes. I think water is not good for the taste- it's good for how it talks and works in our bodies.
