CHELLIEBEAN - You have some great goals set for yourself. I love your picture also. It is so darling!! There is a lot to learn on this journey you are about to partake in so just take it one step and one day at a time.

Diabetes can be quite scary in the beginning when someone first hears the word "diabetes". I would advise you to learn all you can about diabetes - what causes diabetes, how to treat diabetes (both hypo- and hyperglycemia), the symptoms of diabetes, as well as the complications that can accompany uncontrolled diabetes. The more you can learn about this disease, the better you will be able to deal with your diabetes.

If you haven't already done so, go to your Start Page. At the top of that page you will see several tabs. Go to the SITE GUIDE. It is this section that you will find your Welcome Guide and your Site Tour Video. This section will help to make it easier to learn the site, making it easier to find your way around.

The next tab to go to will be the MY TRACKERS. This section you will find many different things but the two most beneficial trackers you will find will be the

1) NUTRITION TRACKER. . This tracker will give you excellent feedback as to whether or not you need to increase or decrease the amount of calories, carbs, fats and proteins, and

2) FITNESS TRACKER. This tracker will help you to be accountable to yourself.

The next tab is the ARTICLES & VIDEOS. This section is where your will find articles on diabetes as well as many other health articles that you might be concerned about or interested in. You will also find videos on different exercises, recipes, cooking etc. There is a lot of information in there to help you.

Learn all you can about diabetes - - what causes diabetes, how to treat diabetes, symptoms of diabetes - both hyper and hypo, and the complications from uncontrolled blood sugars.. The more you learn about all of this the easier it will be to help overcome a lot of this.

The next tab is the COMMUNITY Section. In this section you will find success stories, message boards, different teams etc Be sure to look this over and see what's in other areas of SparkPeople (SP).

Set some small goals for yourself - something that you know you will be able to succeed such as eating so many servings of "freggies" (fruits & vegetables) emoticon emoticon , drinking so many glass of water per day/week emoticon , or getting 7-9 hours of sleep emoticon a certain number of nights per week.

Try to use your Nutrition Tracker as much as possible. The more you can track what goes into your mouth whether good or bad choices, the better you will learn how to eat - what foods work for you and which ones don't.

Don't strive for perfection but instead make steps towards consistency. There will be days on this journey that you will think the scale has stopped working - - don't put too much stock in what that scale says - - it lies. When that time comes as it does to ALL of us from time to time, remember how far you've already come, how much looser your clothes are fitting, how much better you feel physically, how much more energy you have etc etc.

You are NOT alone on this new healthy lifestyle of your journey. We are all going through our own journey such as the one you are beginning. We are all here to help support and encourage each other because we all feel each and everyone of us is WORTH IT!!! YOU ARE WORTH IT!!!

I have gone through this program twice (once as a refresher) and it's surprising how much more you can learn. While on this program I have been able to get off my diabetes medications, have brought my cholesterol and triglyceride levels to well within the normal limits all while losing weight and many clothes sizes. Now, maybe not everyone will be able to get totally off their BS medications as fast as I did but they can help lower the amount of medications through learning how to eat, what works for you and what doesn't and getting in at least 10 minutes of exercise a day. If you feel 10 minutes at one time is too much for you then do two 5-minute exercises. All minutes and steps add up to weight loss and a healthier life style.

If you have any questions as you proceed into your Weekly Discussions, please let us know. There's always someone lurking around the site just waiting to help you. Also, feel free to read other members' posts as well as you might learn some things from their journey as well as them learning from yours.

Have fun and enjoy your journey.

My goals for week one is to establish a healthy exercise routine and to get into a routine of healthy eating. Being new to diabetes (I got diagnosed a few days ago) my last goal is to learn more about what lifestyle changes I need to make.

It doesn't matter how slow you go, just as long as you don't stop!

Have had so much on my mind recently I have let the diet slide. Tried an eat more diet which only made me put on weight. So I am ready for a new challenge and want to lose 8 lbs before the Xmas holiday starts. Going on a cruise to the Far East in January so need to look good for that and all the new clothes I have bought.

So here goes, I am alternating Slimming World Easy Extra with my own diet days (soup and salad) and see how it goes.

I want to become more successful at maintaining a routine. Having established routines help me greatly in following both my nutrition and exercise. I'm pretty good during the week but the weekends, while good in both nutrition and exercise, get out of order, meals are missed or late, mediation is "fit in" and should be a priority ~ you get the picture.

My schedule is totally whacked so I am having a hard time establishing regular meal times. I get up at 2:30 most mornings and work until 6:30 am. Then I catch a little nap and then go to job two. Then comes job three. All at differing times. I am hoping to establish a regular schedule to help my sugars stay even through out the day. It is my main goal. That and drink more water.

The Lord doesn't expect us to work harder than we are able. He doesn't (nor should we) compare our efforts to those of others. Our Heavenly Father asks only that we do the best we can - that we work according to to our full capacity, however great or however small that may be.

BAREFOOTN - If you find that there is some reason that you can't eat your meal on schedule, then by all means have a small snack to hold you over. The snacks are important to aid in maintaining a more even blood sugar level. They also help to keep us from over eating at the next meal and also helps to keep our metabolism working at a faster level. For myself, I have to have my three snacks a day in order to keep my blood sugar levels from crashing.

If you have any questions, please let us know as you do your daily postings. Good luck to you as you go through your new lifestyle journey.

DAVENPLK - Portion sizes are important. So many times, myself included, we have a tendency to rely on our own memories and seem to get us off track. Every once in a while it's a good idea if we go back to weighing and measuring all of our food. It's surprising how far off our mental weights and measuring is off. The water will help you to remove all the toxins from our body.

I'm pretty much in the same boat you are for a few days anyway. I'm doing the icing thing myself on my back - it went out late yesterday. I pray you have a quick healing.

My goal this week is to work on a schedule of when to eat and if I should eat snacks. My schedule is so weird that eating at the same time has become a challenge and made it harder for me to stay on track. I am going to track my food this week so I will know I am getting the right amount. Oh, and drink water.

I am seeing some great goals on this page. I might suggest, however, that when you exercise be sure to take your blood sugar before or after exercising.. Exercising can sometimes cause hypoglycemia so be sure that you have a snack before hand to keep that BSs up where they belong. Just have a small snack of a protein and a carb. Those snacks are important in diabetes to keep our metabolism working the way it is suppose to, helps to keep our BSs from crashing and/or spiking as well as to keep you from over eating at the next meal.

Keep up the good work!!

LE3INMEMPHIS - Learn all you can about diabetes - what causes diabetes, how to treat diabetes - both hypo and hyperglycemia, as well as the complications that can occur with uncontrolled diabetes. Be sure that you eat your three meals and 1-3 snacks a day without going over the calories allowed by the dietitian and/or physician. Eating those snacks will help to keep your metabolism working the way it was meant to work. When it comes to those times that you would like a drink, take a good walk or do some exercises instead. You can do this because YOU ARE WORTH IT!!

My short-term goal is to follow this program, meeting all of the weekly expectations. I'm in week one so my goal is to work out at least 75 minutes this week, track my food for 3 days, and be more mindful of my carb intake. My long-term goal is to be off of most of my meds and be under 200 pounds ... and to feel good in my body.

New to this forum and diabetes. My goals for week one:

Walk at least 30 minutes a day, but strive for 75

Track food 3 times this week

Check glucose levels 3 times this week

Up my water intake

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand - martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming WOO HOO - WHAT A RIDE !

Here are my goals for the next 8 weeks, which will start today:

Clean out pantry, fridge and freezer of those tempting foods I eat and I need to remove from my diet - the foods that had a part in getting me here

Go to store today and stock house with foods that are food for me

Cook - it's all to easy when cooking for myself to go drive thru or order in - cook, it's better for me

Get moving - go walking or do a workout video at least 3 days a week.

Track my daily food intake here on SP It really does make a difference.

Drink more water - even if it means putting reminders on my phone or computer at work to stop and take a sip. If I remember I LOVE ice water and drink a lot, but get involved and just forget.

Either find the charger for my fitbit or order a new one - no more excuses that it's not working and I can't charge it. OR, just get the new Garmin one.

I will succeed. The only way I will fail is if I don't try.

Mary

Here are my goals for the next eight weeks, which will start tomorrow because, where I am, today is already shot.
1. Leave the house daily. (Yep, sounds pathetic, I know, but it's a real goal.)
2. Do Strength Training 3x per week.
3. Track food daily for eight weeks and stay within the limits SP set for me.
4. Return to my yoga practice twice each week.

I was diagnosed with diabetes almost 10 years ago and it was fairly routine until the last few years. Now it's out of hand and I need to get it back under control. My goals are:

1. Lose 21 lbs in 21 weeks to have dropped 10% of my body weight.

2. Walk on my treadmill for 10 min each day.

3. Get back to drinking my 64 oz of water each day .

4. Work eating more sensibly.

I do have more than 21 lbs to lose but I want to start with the first 10%. I'm praying that this program will help get me on the right track.

With Christ's love to all,

Dee

Goals for 2018:
Had the gastric in 2015, lost 50 lbs, now need to lose the rest.

MYLASTDAYONE and KAREYNO126 - You have both set some good goals. Remember to start small with something doable which you know you will be able to succeed at such as increasing your fruits and vegetables (freggies) and/or increasing your non-calorie fluids. Don't forget to reward yourself when you get those goals completed with maybe some flowers or a good movie. When you get those done, then add few more goals etc..

There will be days when we all slip up on one thing or another from time to time, so definitely be forgiving to yourself. Just get right back up and continue on with better choices.

CANDACE - emoticon . You have done remarkably well with losing your weight so far. You are definitely alone on this new lifestyle journey of yours. We are all her to help, support, and encourage one another along their way.

You have set some good long term goals for yourself. You might want to set yourself some short-term goals such as increasing your water intake, increasing your fruits and veggies, or maybe even getting a little more sleep such as 7-8 hours a night. When you get your short term goals completed, don't forget to reward yourself such as getting that good book to read that you've been wanting, or maybe a nice relaxing bath with a candle and smooth music to listen too. After all, YOU ARE WORTH IT!!!

LINDAK - You have set a very good and doable goal for yourself. Be sure you learn all you can about diabetes - what causes diabetes, how to treat diabetes (both hypo- and hyperglycemia) and the complications that often accompanies uncontrolled diabetes. If you have any questions as you go through this new lifestyle journey of yours, please let us know as you do your daily posting. emoticon and together emoticon .

THOMPSON - emoticon aboard. You have a great goal set for yourself. I would suggest that you learn all you can about diabetes - what causes diabetes, how to prevent diabetes, how to treat diabetes - both hypo and hyperglycemia, and the complications that accompany diabetes when you have uncontrolled diabetes.

I would also suggest that you be sure to use the two most important tools offered to you here:

1) Nutrition Tracker - excellent feedback on whether or not you need to increase/decrease your calories, carbs, fats, and protein.

2) Fitness Tracker - excellent way to keep you accountable to yourself. Start out small - maybe 10 minutes a day. Even two 5-minute sessions will work also.

CHARLENE - emoticon !! If there's one thing on this team it's support and encouragement from others! You are never alone on this team. We are all here and going through it with you.

Go back and learn all you can about diabetes - what causes diabetes, how to treat diabetes (both hypo- and hyperglycemia), and the complications of uncontrolled diabetes.

Also, go back to tracking your nutrition and fitness. You will also get excellent feedback on both of those trackers.

I won't lie to you - losing weight, especially as a diabetic, is NOT an easy one but it is a one worth working towards. Since being on SP, I've managed to get off my diabetes medication AND brought my cholesterol and triglycerides all to well within normal limits; not to mention having to buy new clothes because all my other clothes had got way too big for me.

Be sure to eat your 3 meals a day as well as 1-3 snacks a day as well. The snacks will help you to keep from over eating at the next meal and to keep your BS from spiking and/or crashing. Don't forget to drink plenty of non-calorie fluids to help flush out the toxins.

You can do this and together emoticon .

I am joining this challenge for the first time. I have been told for several years now that I am a prediabetic. I have started taking natural supplements to help control blood sugar levels. Such as Mulberry leaf extract which has certainly worked for a lot of the symptoms. My goals here in the challenge are to get some control over the amount of carbs I am getting each day as well as to maybe learn something new and to lose a couple of more pounds.

I'm back to give it another try. Had a wake-up moment this past week. After getting my A1c to 6.4 and very excited about it, I noticed my blood glucose levels beginning to climb again. Heading out for more blood work today. Hoping this past week hasn't hurt too much. My endocrinologist is already thinking about changing my medication if my creatinine is still high. I am on the new drug Invokana. It has been very effective. I'm hoping that by being on this team I will be able to get support from others who understand how this disease works and how hard it is to keep it under control.

My goal is to keep my blood sugar levels under control through diet and exercise. Hopefully, if I stay on track I will begin to lose the weight.
