PMORENA - emoticon . So glad you decided to give us another try. Good for you for wanting to start again. I can really appreciate the goals you have set for yourself. There is also a team for Chair Exercises to help strengthen you legs on those bad days. There all kinds of videos to help you along with your strength training and your balance in SparkPeople (SP). I have a little bit of trouble with my balance as well. I do use the chair exercises when I have my rough days.

This program isn't with just counting calories but carbs, fats, proteins, and fiber. I track all of them to help me keep track of where I need to increase or decrease things.

There is also a team for accountability which is really good also. Be sure to look all the different teams over and jump on into a few of them. I've done that myself, but I also keep going with the Diabetes team to help me keep on track.

If you have any problems or questions as you go through this new lifestyle changing journey of yours, please let us know as you do your daily postings.

I "officially" joined this team back in June but haven't kept up with it - didn't realize I could opt out and then re-enroll but here I am - ready to start the 8-week challenge. My goals are not just to lose weight and keep my count at good numbers but to increase leg strength - I'm finding I have difficulty with climbing stairs and often feel I may lose my balance.

I do pretty well at tracking my meals and snacks but I'm committed to watching not just the calories but also the carbs and fats

I'm starting this with two high-calorie holidays coming up - Halloween and Thanksgiving - but hoping Spark People support will keep me on track

MARIAC - You have a good doable goal set for yourself. When you finish this goal, be sure to reward yourself with something such as maybe a nice relaxing bubble bath, new bath oil, or even reading a good book.

Well I signed up for this a long time ago...I don't even know how long ago! But I never completed any of the goals, so I'm starting over!
So my goal for this challenge is simple. My doctor requested that I lose 7 pounds before December when I see him. I'm hoping to lose between 1-3 lbs between now and January 1. I've already succeeded once in getting my blood sugar & A1c normal and gotten myself off of insulin. But the past few weeks, my blood sugar has been slowly creeping up again. I want to get it back down where it belongs, want to keep my A1c normal, and want to be in better physical condition than I am now! Hopefully that's not too much at once! :-)

"Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step."
Martin Luther King, Jr.

"You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do."
Eleanor Roosevelt

KLAROCHE - Aren't you glad for a new day? For new start overs? It happens to all of us at one time or another. Just don't be too hard on yourself. After all, you're only human!!! Just be sure to get right back on track.

With all the exercising you had done, you might not have done too much damage with your blood sugars as you think.

The next time the food calls your name, just remind yourself of how you felt when you had Kentucky Fried Chicken!!!

I really do commend you for at least recording all the food you ate. Sometimes it's easier to just not write it down and pretend it didn't happen. It takes a lot of strength to record food eaten when we know we flubbed big time!!

After I posted my last message saying that I was going to eat right, I turned around and ate at Kentucky fried Chicken. I had mashed potatoes with gravy (not supposed to have because of the diabetes), the biscuit (not supposed to have) and 2 pieces of chicken with the skin. It was calling to me after I saw a commercial for it and I was weak. I did record it though (all of it, I was honest) and luckily I did not go over my calories. It did push me over on my fats and carbs though. I knew if I ate there, I would feel guilty and I do! emoticon but the temptation was more than I could resist. Before I ate there, I had just worked out at the gym. I did 11 miles on the bike. 1 hour of exercising so that part was good. I recorded this as well. It is just the bread and the potatoes and the weak will that was so bad. I know that I will pay for this setback with my blood sugar being high. Hopefully I can do better for the rest of this week. emoticon emoticon . I so hate being controlled by food.

I have started eating healthier and recording it on the food tracker. I previously lost 40 lbs. doing this and it does work. I am back to working out at the gym. It is a little harder this time because I am having pain in the heel of my right foot. Probably from the medication I am taking. But I am persevering. I am also recording all my exercises. I am very confident that if I keep up with the sparkpeople challenge, I will lose the weight I need to and get off this medication. My Goal is to follow the challenge for 8 weeks and see where I am afterwards.

SZNHUB and SDALGARD - Welcome to you both. Glad you joined us. Be sure to learn all you can about diabetes - what causes it, how to treat both hypo-and hyperglycemia, as well as the complications that occur when you have uncontrolled diabetes.

Be sure to eat your 3 meals as well as your 1-3 snacks a day. The snacks are important. They will help you to keep from over eating at the next meal, helps to keep your metabolism working as it was intended to, and to help keep your blood sugars from spiking and/or crashing.

KATHY - emoticon to SparkPeople (SP)! First off, I would recommend that you learn all you can about diabetes - what causes diabetes, how to treat diabetes (both hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia), as well as the results of not having controlled diabetes.

Being a Type II diabetic myself, I do know that it is possible to be able to get off your medications or at least bring your diabetes under control as I have been able to get off of my diabetes medication. It takes work and effort on your part but it can be done.

There are two great tools to use on these challenges and throughout your new lifestyle journey:

1) NUTRITION TRACKER - This tracker will give you great feedback as to whether or not you need to increase/decrease the amount of calories allowed to you by your nutritionist and/or physician as well as whether or not to increase/decrease your carbs, fats, and proteins.

Be sure to eat your 3 meals a day plus your 1-3 snacks a day. Be sure to eat AT LEAST your minimal amount of calories each day (I, myself, seem to do better at the upper end of the calories). Your snacks will help you to keep from over eating before each meal as well as help you to keep your metabolism working better AND it will help you to keep your sugars from spiking and/or crashing.

2) FITNESS TRACKER - This tracker will help to keep you accountable to yourself. If you are not use to exercising, you might want to start at just 10 minutes a day and if that seems like too much then try to do two 5-minute sessions a day.

Set yourself some a few short-term goals such as maybe increasing the amount of fruits and veggies (freggies), and/or increasing your non-calorie fluids to help flush out the toxins from your body. You could also increase the number of hours of sleep (7-8 hours a night). Whatever you decide to do for your short term goals make them doable for you, something that you know you will have success at. After you reach your goals, reward yourself with something something such as a manicure, pedicure, new purse, that book you've been wanting etc.

Be sure to let us know how you're doing or any problems you might have by doing your posting each day.

emoticon and together emoticon .

I could not believe it when the doctor told me I am pre diabetic. My goals are:
* Cut out the vast majority of sugar and unhealthy carbs
* Get back to an exercise program. I have never been so couch bound in my life.
* Eat more veggies and home cooked meals
* Get my blood sugar down through diet and exercise if possible

Hi my name is Kathy and I have just returned to Sparkpeople after a very long absence. I am not sure what my goal would be because I am new to having type 2 diabetes. I am hoping to learn more about what I can do to get this under control and off my medication. I take Glipizide right now and it is not doing too much. 3 months ago my glucose was 7.8 which labeled me as diabetic. This week I was 7.6, 3 months later. The doctor wants to change my medication to Januvia, but after reading the contraindications and talking to my pharmacist, I am not comfortable with this new medication. I am staying on my old one until I find a new doctor. I just have to be careful with what I eat. I can use all the help I can get. Not sure where to go from here.

SHARON - You have set some realistic and doable goals for yourself. Be sure you eat at least the minimal amount of calories allowed you by either the dietician and/or your physician. If you don't eat at least that much, then your body will put you into starvation mode and will want to hang on to every calorie it can thinking that it's not going to get any more to eat. Be sure to eat your 3 meals and/or 1-3 snacks each day. The snacks are important in that they will help to keep you from over eating at the next meal, will help to keep your metabolism moving in the right direction, and will also help to keep your blood sugars from spiking and/or crashing.

EUPHRATES - I'm so glad you were aware of the symptoms that were going on within your body. I think you were smart to seek out the doctor as well as withdrawing from school for a few months until you get things under control. You definitely don't need any additional stress on your system. Stress has a lot to do with high blood sugars. It's best to get that under control.

Sleeping is a necessity to keep your body working the way it should. Strive for 7-9 hours of sleep each night.

If you drink a lot of coffee or other caffeinated beverages in a day, I would advise that you withdraw from that slowly in order to keep from having withdrawal symptoms.

Be sure you eat your 3 meals a day as well as 1-3 snacks a day - the snacks are important to help keep you from over eating at the next meal, to keep your metabolism working at a higher pace than it is presently, and to help keep your blood sugars from spiking and/or crashing.

If you have any questions, please let us know as you do your daily postings..

The stress of school spiked so badly this semester I started manifesting symptoms that scared me, so I went to see my doctor. I am now on blood pressure medication for the first time ever, she gave me Xanax for stress and sleep, and determined based on my blood glucose in the office and the results of the A1C she had drawn that I am diabetic.

SO, I've withdrawn from school to get my health in order (because there's no way I can handle the stress of nursing school if my body isn't in fighting shape), and by the time I go back in May I hope to be back down under 200 lbs, and have my diabetes and blood pressure maintained by healthy eating and exercise, NOT by medications.

I am seeing my doc on Wednesday to make more of a plan (she just got the A1C numbers back on Friday), but for right now my goals are:
1) Cut out the caffeine (other than one cup in the morning of coffee - I'd been drinking WAY too much pop, and not diet pop either)
2) Cut back on the alcohol (I'd been drinking every night in order to unwind enough to sleep, not good)
3) Drink at least 8 glasses (8 oz) of water a day
4) Track my food every day.

Next week, once I discuss parameters with her, I will start back to exercising (which I'm really looking forward to, actually...not having time to work out between work and school is a HUGE part of how I've gained back nearly all the weight I lost before I started school, and I've really missed it.)

So, that's where I'm at for now.

My goal is to loss a minimum of another 4 pounds by mid-October. I have needing to loss the final 10 pounds to make my goal for about 2 years. It is past time to become more assertive in watching the portions of food I consume.

I have been exercising 3 - 4 times a week; however, I need to increase either the level of exercise or the time. For now I will work on increasing the time to 45 minutes minumum and adding free weights back to my routine at least twice a week.

My goal is to complete this challenge and gain information and resources to control this disease. I was diagnosed with diabetes when I ended up in the hospital with a severe infection in my foot. I'm not supposed to be on my foot yet so I will be checking out the seated exercises for a couple of weeks.

I have my blood sugars under control except for my fasting blood sugar. I am working with my endrocrinologist to regulate my insulin dosages.

Slow but steady wins the race!

My goal is to get my sugar under control. I have cravings for breads, pretzels hard and soft and the whole wheat honey pretzels, graham crackers wirh creamed cheese.
I've done without for almost 14 days straight then I had a Philadelphia pretzel, I only meant to eat half of it. Hahaha the next thing I knew it was gone. The next day I was crazy!

My goal is no baked starches.

Yo ticker! Thank you for moving down:)

My goal is the complete this 8 week challenge (something challenging enough), exercise 3-5 times a week, and lower the amount of carbs I eat.
