I ran a full 5K today...training to run the 5K portion of the Susan G. Komen Race in St. Louis next month. I'm not a runner, but I enjoy running around my neighborhood...probably not the best times, but, hey, at least I'm running it!

I have to force myself a lot of times too but once I get going, I'm usually ok. And I'm always happy I did it when I'm done.

Here is the reply I got from Coach Nancy on the side stitches!
Hope this helps even more!!

"Stitches are caused when the diaphragm goes into a spasm or if the contents in the stomach push on the diaphragm thus pushing on the other internal organs...they usually occur due to faulty breathing or running so hard you jar the ligaments that support the diaphragm.

What to do is slow down or stop until the pain subsides. You can try exhaling forcefully through pursed lips, too.

If the side stitches are caused from faulty breathing, you will want to spend some time working on some belly breathing techniques...lie flat on your back (no pillow) and place a book on your lower abdomen, then breathe deeply raising and lowering the book with each breath.

As far as eating, this can be a problem for some, so you may want to wait a little longer after eating or drink juice which will allow you to get some sugar into your system, but it will be digested and out of your stomach come your run.

Slowing down and deep belly breathing can be the easiest way to handle this very common issue. "

OMGoodness... yesterday I finished Day 1 of Week 2. I couldn't believe it!!

I only cut short my last 2 minute jog by a couple of seconds and that's only because I had terrible side stitches. I had the biggest smile on my face when I got through it. I really can't believe I did that. I love this program!!

Speaking of side stitches, if I feel them coming on what's the best way to work through them? Better yet, what's the best way to prevent them?

HI everyone!

I completed Week 2 Day 1. It wasn't too bad. I didn't feel out of breath which is good because in the past I would have been. However, my legs especially my knees and ankles were hurting pretty bad at the end. The good news is they feel good this morning.

Looking forward to Day 2 tomorrow emoticon

You are probably tensing your shoulder up when you run. During the walking periods I make a focused effort to relax my arms and shoulders while I breathe deeply. This helps release any tension you might've been unwittingly holding during the sprint.

As for pushing through the first 2 minutes, just go slow. You don't need to run fast. You are working to build up endurance. Time and speed will come later.

Great way to ice your shins (as i need to do) is freeze water in those little cheap styrofoam cup and peel back to expose a little ice and start rubbing up and down your shins. You will need to peel back the styrofoam as the ice melts and keep it moving rather quickly. Oh and i would put a towel underneath your feet to catch the water. This tip was from my occupational therapist friend! Works great for me and I always keep a few frozen in the fridge. Also motrin has become my best friend! emoticon

I just finished week 2 day 1 and am wandering if anyone could give me some advice. I started having pain in my right shoulder around the 19 minute mark. This also happened on Saturday when I ran. I notice that it only comes when I feel like I am struggling to breathe. Saturday the shoulder pain was accompanied by a side stitch, but today it was just the shoulder bothering me. I am wandering if there are any breathing techniques that could help or exercises that will help boost my lungs. Thanks.

I had a false start for Week 2. But I did it twice this week, with 1.30 / 3.30 intervals mixed with 3.00/2.00 intervals. It worked. I got running shows too =) New Balance ones.

And.. I suscribed to my first 5k! It's done, paid and all. I've already convinced my mom and sis to come and cheer me at the arrival line!!!

Week 2 Day 1 COMPLETED!! I can't believe I was able to run the 2 min intervals, but I did and I survived. I might actually be able to do this. What is really great is I was hitting a wall with my weight loss but after completing Week 1, I can actually feel my mid section tightening up. And that is better than any number on the scale!!

Did Day 1 Week 2 today. I was really surprised that I could do the whole thing. Was really nervous about running 2 consrcutive minutes. But I DID it! WOW. This is NOT to say that by the 5th set I wasn't sucking air like a fish out of water. Hopefully Day 2 goes as well.

Thank you Suezette! I really had NO idea it was that much of a difference. I think as I get more into this and make the commitment I'll have to invest in a better pair of running shoes. The man at the shoe store today was extremely helpful and also a runner. I really liked that he didn't push me to get a more expensive pair of shoes than I needed/wanted. That really spoke volumes to me. Good to know about the wider too box.

Chris, shoes definitely make the difference when it comes to running! I actually have 2 different pairs I run in....My Saucony's are for my shorter runs and my Asics are for longer runs due to my feet swelling. Asics has a wider toe box too.

Got a pair for running sneaks today. Made my W2D1 SOOOO much better. I finished week 1 last weekend and hadn't been able to run during the week. I was a little apprehensive about running today since I knew my run durations would be longer and I was struggling with the last one. The shoes made such a HUGE difference!!!! I had been running using the 'rocker' shoes [cringe!] and knew it wasn't the best but didn't have the $$ for running shoes. This weeks budget allowed and I am more than happy with what I got. Can't wait for W2D2!!! Maybe I'll be able to run outside this time.

Just finished week 2's 3rd run - used an ipod today - amazing what is on my child's ipod: everything from wrap, Ray Charles, Nora Jones, Buffet, Jack Johnson, show tunes and on and on....so I jogged for the entire length of a song - most likely longer that 2 mins...felt great and I am charged to complete this journey.

By the way, some of those oldies from Ray Charles are just as racy as much of the music today (just no denigration of women...wish we could get that out of our kids' music).

have a great week end and see you ALL in Week 3!

I survived the 1% incline - Yeah! It wasn't as bad as I expected. I even walked an extra 15 minutes. Day 2 actually seemed easier than day 1 (even with the 1% incline).

I finished W2D1 on Sunday. Not as bad as I thought it would be, but I know I have room for improvement. I have been running on the treadmill because I live in Minnesnowta (brrr!) and because my husband works shift work so he isn't always home to watch the baby while I run. I will have to try a 1% incline to make it a little more realistic. I am just getting back into exercising after years away. I actually find myself missing it on the days I don't do anything.

@Cathyunew I was also feeling it in my lungs. It might just have been my state of mind yesterday during the run that prevented me from doing as well as I wanted to. I was also really starting to feel it in my lungs too. I went for the extra round to make it 30 Minutes as well (I just wanted to see if I could do it). By the end though, I was really hurting.

XNIKOX I found the added minute not too bad on the legs, but my lungs were hating it! Wow, I can't believe how much harder it was than week one! Each two min jog session got harder and harder....course it wouldn't have been so bad if I had done it 4 times instead of 5. (I read the directions wrong too!) That last min of the 5th circuit just had me gasping for breath! Felt like I was climbing a mountain. "Got Oxygen?"

The circle I go around...my park... has an incline of about 40 ft from top to bottom of the .3 mile loop. I try to time it so that most of the jog is on the down hill but that was impossible today. It is going to be killer when I have to go all the way up and around.

I started week 2 yesterday. For some reason, that extra added minute of jogging was starting to take a toll on my body. I felt my legs just stopping mid jog every once in a while, which really differed from last week (i was really pumped for it). Is this normal?

I finished week 2 and realized today when I went to track it that I've been doing it wrong. Somehow I read 3 minutes walking/2 minutes jogging/25 minutes total and did it 5 times even though I was only supposed to do four. But I guess I now know I can do this week's 5 times since I've already done it! emoticon

Week 2 was completed Saturday! I felt a little stronger each day and my pace was a little faster by the end of the week. I'm looking forward to starting week 3 tomorrow.

Week 2 is done. Go me for sticking in with this so far. I talked to my friend in the St. Louis area and I think I may drive up and do the Komen race in June or July with her.

I have only completed day 2 of week 2 so far. I think I will stay on week 2 for another week. Had some problems with my knee on the second day. I like the suggestion of raising the incline on the treadmill, I will try that on my next session.

Suezette, I've heard that before about the 1% incline on the treadmill. Friday was only my 2nd time ever trying to run on one. With 1% incline my shins were burning, but they've been fine walking my normal routes lately, even with hills. When I dropped it to 0.5% it instantly felt better. I think I'm just not used to the treadmill. I'm still a little afraid I'll trip or fall off, and it just feel disorienting getting off the thing. Maybe I'm just weird? Like I said, not much experience with the treadmill.

Lori, put your TM on a 1% incline to mimic roads. It helps in transitioning.
Also, if you find 2 minutes to much, try a minute and a half for a week.

Week 2 is complete! The past two training sessions have felt awesome, after my terrible W2 start on Tuesday with my abbreviated session and the pain in my ankles. I'm looking forward to increasing the duration/distance in Week 3, and even more looking forward to flipping the ratio in Week 4!

NOVABLUE: For transitioning, when you run on the treadmill are you setting an incline? It will be most helpful if you use at least a small amount of incline when you're running indoors.

I start week 2 tomorrow and I'm a little worried about it. Running for 2 minutes sounds like so long when last week was only 1 minute! I'll give it my best shot! I run on a treadmill, and I'm also wondering how my running will transition to outside......I know it'll be harder. It'll be awhile before I try running outside. I hate the cold and won't do it when its cold out.

Anyway...I'm sure I'll report in after I attempt W2D1!!

Good work everyone!

Finished with week 2! Again, I covered slightly more distance outdoors than I have on my treadmill. I did my run this morning at 6:30 and it was 30 degrees out. You only feel a little cold for about 5 minutes, even with 2 long sleeves and long winter running pants on. LOL

Hi did week 2 day2 today. It was easier than day 1 was. I am doing this on a treadmill. The roads here are still too bad to venture on. With the amount of snow we have here who knows when they will be safe.

Did Wk 2 Day 2 last night. Guess I'm a fair weather runner. It was just too cold for me so I went to the gym after work and ran on the treadmill. I was feeling strong and did my intervals different. Instead of five 2-min running intervals I did four varying intervals 3/2/4/2. Yep. I managed to jog 4 whole minutes one time. Go me.

W2D3 done. I had done 2 days out doors and to-day I did the treadmill. I can only increase my pace as my treadmill has no incline setting. Only did 1.6 miles in 25mins to-day ran a bit further out doors. On to week 3.

I am really enjoying this program! I do the first two days of the week outside and day 3 outside. Well, I did for week one. Now we have a foot of snow outside - we generally do not get snow here on the peninsula - so not outside running for me. It should be gone by monday and i can do my outside running then.

UCANTTAKETHESKY, it's totally okay to be at the treadmill point. When I was just beginning running last year at this time, it was very hard to transition to street running after a few runs on the treadmill. I had to though because I joined a group program that trained outdoors 2x per week. After that, when I had to run on a treadmill, it was a nice change for awhile (like when it was 99 degrees out with high humidity, I loved the treadmill), then when I'd get to do an outdoor run it was like heaven again. It's all good so long as we're moving! :D

Having read through most of the postings here, I see how different everyone feels about treadmill vs. outdoors. Personally, I'm still at a treadmill point. I know that because I did my first day of week 2 outside on flat ground and couldn't finish because I couldn't breathe. I did day 2 on a treadmill and had no problem. Of course, other factors included having music on day 2 and having water with me. But hey, it's a learning process, right? emoticon Good luck to everyone on finishing week 2! emoticon

Thanks! I wish I could go outside. Here in Minnesota, it's 2 degrees today, and it was snowing a dusting over the ice. NOT ideal outdoor running or walking conditions. So it's TM for me, but it's good to know that the incline setting 2 is a good choice.

I get to do day 3 tomorrow...yay!!! I've said all along that I'll do my Saturday morning run outdoors unless it's lightning out or icy roads. Looks like tomorrow I won't have the perfect conditions like I did last week...going to be 33 or so instead of the perfect 50 I had last week. I'll do all runs outdoors once it gets lighter earlier.

Treadmill versus outdoors... I find it easier and much more enjoyable to go outdoors. My pace varies automatically outdoors as opposed to having to increase/decrease treadmill speed, and I think that's what makes it easier for me.

Nope, by putting your TM at a 1-2% incline, you are mimicking road running.
However, you will still notice a difference when you finally do run outside.

IMO, I find running outside much easier then TM running but then again, I have a dislike of running on a TM.

I finished W2D2 this morning, and it felt great! I did 1.64 miles in the 25 minutes.

Question: since the roads are icy, I have been doing the workout on a treadmill. I put the incline at setting 2. Is this giving me too easy a workout? Will road-running be harder? I don't want to be shocked when I finally can get outside.
