Are we going to continue the dog walk challenge through Dec? I hope so!

SHEPARD17 - when I read your question, I realized that I had JUST read something related in this month's Health Magazine! so here's the question/answer from that (it's page 44 of the December 2007 issues)

Q: is there really such a thing as a "fat-burning zone" when I do cardio?
A: Yes, but it doesn't matter, says William Kraemer, PhD, professor of kinesiology at the University of Connecticut. Moderate workouts burn the most fat, while inteste ones burn the most carbs. But a calorie's a calorie - and you'll burn more of them when you pick up the pace. What's more, with high-intensity cardio, you'll tourch calories for about 24 hours afterward. With moderate cardio, on the other hand, the burn stops when you step off the treadmill.

I think it all depends on how fast you're running/walking. You can get an estimate of the calories burned in the fitness section of your Sparkpage. I personally like walking or cross-country hiking. I think time will be your biggest deciding factor. I'll get you signed up for our walk challenge and if you want to most your mileage in the November section (soon there will be one for December) that might help keep you motivated. Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi all!! Well I have been a member on here for a while now, but haven't made much progress. It has finally gotten cool enough to run outstide. My kid (Jasmine; a lab mix) and I ran 2.5 miles last night. I am very proud of us! My goal is to run with her at least 4 nights a week. We'll see how it goes! I have a question for anyone who might know... What is better for loosing weight? To go for a 30 minute run or to go for an hour walk? Either way your heart rate is up right?

Nope! Ohio, and to top things off, I have spent the past 2 days in bed with some stomach bug. Thank goodness it was just over 24 hours, I am feeling perfectly fine now. So missed out on walking, but will put some miles in tomorrow.

sounds like you live in Seattle! I was whining last night about how dark it was .. we had to break out the lighted collars & my flashlight before hitting the pavement ... I'm not a fan of walking in the dark!

Okay, so here is my whine. I have been having some problems with am walks because its so dark out still, now it is dark in the pm too. And it's getting cold. I know I need to do it, but it is getting hard to do.

I have five dachshunds (well, now I have 10 because last Tuesday we whelped a litter). I routinely walk all five of my pups, coupled together, 2 miles in the morning and 2 miles in the evening. My neighbors know me as "that crazy lady with the kennel." Please put me in for 28 miles this week! (Love this challenge--think I should go for more?)

Ok, so we had to finish the job today. It took another hour. We had 49 bags yesterday and went through almost a whole box of 20 more bags! I'm so exhausted. And now I have to pack for our trip. We leave on Halloween and I don't want to lift any heavy suitcases. We'll see how often I can get online over the next 6 weeks. So, I won't be able to post any playtime with the puppy as he is going to the boarding place tomorrow. I just know I'm going to cry having to leave my baby. :(

We raked and bagged 49 large bags of leaves yesterday. Duke ran and romped in the leaves while mommy and daddy were working up a sweat. He thwarted our efforts a lot. We were out there for 3 hours! We're sore today but we had fun. There is still one more big pile to bag up. I guess this is the downside of having a large yard with many mature trees.

One hour in the morning and 1 hour in the evening, we manage about 3 miles during each hour, if we didn't have to stop so much it would probably be even higher. Sometimes it was hard to get the evening one done, but once I was used to it, it wasn't so bad. I am hoping that winter will not deter me. It's supposed to be a really cold one this year. I am looking on ebay for a good ski jacket. The really scary thing is, even with the 1 hour 2x a day, Hatch still has energy to burn. The other 2 are content and tired. So, I have also been asking around for a very cheap/free treadmill so I can put Hatch on it. One will turn up, I found a new one that looked really nice for around $250, so I'll do what I can to start saving for that in the meantime.

We've already had 3 days of snow here. Not anything too big though. We went to the dog park again today. So that's another hour of fun play and but sniffing circles. It's so funny to watch them. Duke got them all running and he was such a turbo puppy just going as fast as he could. I almost wonder if I should have taken him to the track.

Have a great day.

Hey Sher! I know we have a lot of postings here so it's hard to find the "object" of it. Basically what we're doing is trying to walk around the world together with our pooches. Log your miles and give them to me, daily, weekly, monthly, whichever works for you. I'll give you updates on where we're at on Sundays. If you use KM, that's fine too, I have the conversion. And as always, if you have questions, just let me know. I'll be posting updates here pretty soon.

Hi there everyone!! So what is the challenge? I have been scanning this and there are so many that I'm not sure what the "actual challenge" is. Do I just post how many miles I walk? Or am I supposed to put in so many a day?
Thanks!

No, Duke wasn't tuckered out, he was way too hyper and my husband didn't want to deal with it. So I got a gentle leader head collar (like a Halti) for him today and took him for a walk by ourselves. He had 2 fits with it but other than that, it was a very nice peaceful walk and he was very obedient.

So 1 mile for us tonight! Have a great day tomorrow!

Well, Duke and I played in the yard raking up leaves and bagging them for an hour yesterday at least. We bagged 6 large bags of leaves and now the back of my thighs hurt. I guess it's been longer than I thought since I worked out those muscles.

Got the miles and it doesn't matter Temporary, I get notices from both links so I'm good either way. Thanks for asking though, I appreciate it! I'll have 3.5 miles in by the end of the night. I did two with my human walking partner and I'll do another with Zeek tonight (he hates Sundays!).

Yep - I'm kind of taking it slowly though and alternating days. We're still going to the dog park on days when I'm resting my ankle, but the occasional stroll at a slow pace doesn't seem to be hurting too much!

2,000 generally equals a mile (if you're shorter & take smaller steps - it's more than 2,000 and if you're taller & take longer strides, it's less).

Hi there, I'm new to the site and have just posted my info on the introductions. I'd like to join in this challenge as well, I have a pedometer I can use - how many steps makes a mile or a kilometer? My Timbit also needs to lose about 5lbs so we can both benefit from this excercise. Thanks for having it.

Count me in! Walking my dogs is my favorite activity. Even though they are 9 and 7, we love taking 1 - 2+ hour hikes at local parks. It keeps us all happy and in better shape!

Oh we did didn't we?? Ooops! I remember being 135 and seeing pictures now of where I was then...I was too thin. But I had a boyfriend who thought I was a cow at 140 (jerk). And there is a difference between and healthy 140 and an unhealthy one. Take your weight as they come and you may find that you're quite happy at 129. Okay, back on track now I guess! LOL!

Hmm, well that site told me I should be between 131 and 158. That seems high though. I was in the 150s in college, and looking back at those pictures, I would NOT be happy there. (But then it was an unhealthy 150 - thanks to bad food and alcohol. I suppose if it was a HEALTHY 150, naturally there with a good lifestyle, maybe I wouldn't have the bloated look going on.)

I changed my ticker though to 125 after all. We'll see what happens. Entering in a new goal did lower my calories more than I've ever had to go down so it may end up proving to be an unrealistic goal after all.

I hope you don't mind that sometimes I take the challenge thread and veer it off course! We always return to the correct topic at hand at least!

Okay I found this on the weight watchers web site. It said my healthy weight range for my age should be between 127-153. So I might try for 140 so that I have 13 pounds on either side to stay healthy! :)

According to my BMI, I shouldn't go lower than 122, but 125 is still in the healthy range. But I'd be curious to see what that number would be taking my age into account as well. I'll do some searching, too. Thanks! :)

Yeah, my husband doesn't care if I lose any weight as all, but I know what I need to do to be healthy. I would find a website that not only looks for a healthy weight range for your height but for your age as well. That's how I came up with my goals. I'll see if I can't find one and post it.

Shannon :)

Thanks! I'm actually thinking about changing that ticker. I'm wondering if I could push my goal to 125. I'm not sure if that's too low though. (If you ask my husband, he would for sure tell you that he wants me no lower than 129, but what does he know?!)

I just calculated how far we went, and it was 1.4 miles. Weirdly enough, my ankle felt better near the end of the walk than it did when we first started out. I almost kept going, but then got scared that I'd be pushing it.

Well you may not have been walking but I see that ticker is only 1/2 pound away from your goal!!!! Nice work! We look forward to having you racking up miles with us again, but don't push yourself too hard, take it slow and keep that ankle healthy. Take care!

All right, so tomorrow will officially be my first walk with my dogs since spraining my ankle. I'm trying not to set my sights too high (maybe a mile total), so I'll still take them to the dog park to get real exercise, but I miss walking them and tallying up miles with you guys!

I hired a dog walker for the little guy who will be coming during the middle of the day. It took me a while to find someone who I was comfortable with, but I think it will make Maximus a happier, more well-adjusted pup.

I walked 2 miles with my Valdemar yesterday.

Hubby trained with Frida at the local dog-training club, and Valdemar and I always take a good walk and have some fun together while they're away.
